Listener Beware, You’re In For A Scare
# of Episodes (at time of listening): ~40
Genres: Horror / Fiction / Anthology
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I’m not usually big on anthology-style series. Just a personal preference. So when one comes around that catches my attention & keeps my interest, I feel like that’s grounds for some *high praise*. (Read that in the style of a Nic Cage voice please).
As I listened, “Your Horror Show” came across like a much more intense version of “Goosebumps”. For anyone reading this that doesn’t know what “Goosebumps” is, I implore you to go read some of the books. Heck, go watch the old 90’s show if you’re feeling adventurous. There is definitely some cheesy-ness to be found, but that is also intertwined with the grotesque.
As with all anthology series, the episodes can be hit or miss. Some leave you scratching your head & saying “what even was that”? Others grab on to you & don’t let go. In the case of this podcast, I found the ratios to be much higher “hits” than “misses”. There was a lot of solid voice acting, the stories were very engaging, and I really liked the ambiance. The writing was well done in a way that provided just enough to know necessary character details, which allowed your attention to focus on the plot. Not all of them were winners, but when they hit, they hit.
One big issue I had was the ads. However, this was not in a way you might think. This wasn’t a frustration with the types of ads, their length, or their frequency, but rather it was the placements / editing cuts. In one of the first episodes, there was a weird ad interjection during the climax of the story. A character was screaming, then mid-scream an ad took place, then we return to the scream of the character. It was very harsh. At first, I thought maybe this was just an editing error, but the ad placements are messy throughout the show. I will say they *DID* get a bit more regimented & organized during Season 3, but at times they were still a bit off.
With all that said, I really enjoyed this show. Despite having a few bumps in the road, I think this one is worth your time. Check it out & take in some of the spooks, especially if you’re in that Halloween mindset like I currently am!
