1:00

letterbox. Your views of High School Musical are

1:04

are gaining some traction on. To.

1:06

Dig Dug! Yeah, all the

1:08

comments just say I'm right which League

1:11

of Korea's. Wow yeah G expected the

1:13

right now I just feel like it's hitting

1:15

a school musical fans feeds. You know the

1:17

algorithm is giving like minded people that content.

1:22

Yeah. But like who doesn't like high school

1:24

musical acts are really it's hitting everyone's feeds

1:26

because everyone's a fan and. Amen! no one

1:28

had ever say about the Earth as I saw

1:30

heard Kelsey saw Challengers this weekend with the. Are.

1:33

Friends and they are all the how was it,

1:35

that's the tennis movie. I.

1:37

Saw it was. it's really good. I

2:09

on your mind. Overtime the chat we

2:11

have or California in the house Ohio,

2:13

Uva, Woodstock, Kansas, Colorado, Iowa, Germany, Canada,

2:15

Mexico, Sydney, Australia to live in. Try

2:17

to figure out geography today so I

2:20

may end up going to tomorrow. Land.

2:22

Where. Is it Antwerp? Tulsi?

2:24

Belgium. Maria. In Torbay.

2:27

Cel jobs are and were

2:29

belgian of answer to Maryland

2:31

it apparently this incredible festival

2:33

that ease like five star

2:36

luxury. The acts are incredible,

2:38

the production is. Hop

2:40

of the line like there's no other place

2:43

like tomorrow and on earth. And. Your

2:45

to this thing? Ever heard of Mall and

2:47

course but with there's different versions of tomorrow

2:49

and as in tomorrow in building a particular.

2:52

This. Thing is is another level. Go there and get

2:54

a waffle. A lot whole of her

2:56

leisurely caviar only champagne rooms and stuff. That's

2:58

a terrible him and rooms here we have

3:00

you heard of this? Oh. Wow.

3:03

Hairless good. Jordan. Thank you! So

3:05

now I also like your ankle. High odds

3:08

were ousted as seeker. Oh they're real

3:10

their that the ultra many is. The

3:13

either from Australia with up out

3:15

the derelict A.com not and since

3:17

nineteen seventy four my bad. That

3:21

yeah, I think there's any like may have

3:23

because it's really gross or it down. Alice Good

3:26

thanks I was rolling on the gonna say that

3:28

yesterday and and I drove a rolling on the

3:30

ground usher was did you enjoy yet the I.

3:33

Did he seems uneasy scattered throughout? Not.

3:35

Once I would have said i. Have

3:37

as others branding throughout the festival. the third

3:39

you I was there do song over

3:41

the place use yeah I looked aren't

3:43

wishes of is rolling around on the ground

3:46

you worry rolling. Wow. The

3:48

ground. I mean I I was sitting on

3:50

the ground and than eight laid. Down so my

3:52

hair was on the ground. So what was your festival

3:54

experiencing? Would he would? He would he do in

3:56

their farm that I. i'm

3:58

walking around We're in

4:01

a cute outfit, listening to some

4:03

country music. Are you like on

4:05

substances? Like what are you doing?

4:07

You don't have to say it for legal reasons. I'm

4:11

legally an adult that's allowed to partake in

4:13

things. Okay, yeah. Well, I mean, yeah. In

4:15

theory, yes. In theory. Well,

4:18

depending on what you're partaking in, it's really

4:20

illegal. Doesn't matter. What are you doing? I'm

4:23

just dancing. I'm just having a great time. I

4:26

was with a big group of friends. It was really,

4:28

really fun. I'm just genuinely interested in like what the

4:30

country festival flow is. Like is

4:33

it the same? It's kind of

4:35

just like a smaller country

4:37

Coachella. That's how I'd describe it.

4:40

Like the Sahara Tet is like blocked off.

4:42

They close that part of the festival. So

4:45

it's literally three stages. Oh, wow. And

4:47

one of them's inside. And

4:49

yeah, I mean, the food's different.

4:51

Everything is different. There was like a Yellowstone

4:53

meet and greet area where you could just

4:56

like sit around these fake fires. And I

4:58

don't know. That's cool. Yeah,

5:00

no, it was cool. What

5:02

was your favorite part of stagecoach this year? Oh,

5:05

it's a great, there was like this, the

5:08

food. The food was awesome. The food.

5:10

Yeah. I was gonna say there was this Malibu

5:12

pop-up with like these really good frozen drinks because it

5:14

was hot as heck. So

5:17

drank those, had a great time. No

5:20

one told me though that stagecoach is BYOM.

5:23

What is that? The young man. Oh,

5:25

oh. You're your own man? Oh, meaning like you're not gonna go there and

5:27

hook up. Well, I mean, just

5:29

looking for like a cowboy to hang out with. Yeah,

5:31

because everybody's, their tether's a fumble. Literally,

5:34

I was buying a lemonade my first day and this

5:37

dude, the guy telling me a lemonade goes, have

5:39

you noticed that it's like one

5:41

dude for every seven girls? And I go, I

5:43

sure have. Thanks for mentioning it. You

5:47

are at this phase in life where you enter

5:49

every situation looking for someone. Like the potential

5:51

to meet someone is right. I don't know if

5:53

that's true, but when I'm out looking super cute at a

5:56

music festival, then yeah, of course that's gonna

5:58

be going through my brain. I get it. I mean, yeah,

6:02

of course. I love a good girl Let

6:05

me if there aren't any men to pick from and see what

6:07

else is out there point. Good point Yeah,

6:09

you gotta make do with what you got, right?

6:11

Yeah. Yeah, okay. Keep your options open All

6:14

right, so that it has a food at stagecoach

6:18

You know the weirdest thing today, but did you

6:20

guys anybody watch the stream? I know you're there

6:22

but anybody off stream Of course, I had the

6:24

stream on the Amazon music stream on Prime and

6:26

here on Twitch this channel Actually, I had it

6:28

on all weekend still very confused about Eric Church.

6:30

I love it I thought it was amazing I

6:33

thought it was great But if you're headlining the

6:35

opening night of a festival an acoustic gospel set

6:37

not it probably not It's probably not the time

6:39

and place for it I thought if I was

6:41

paying to see that if I knew what I

6:43

was getting into I'll be like that was fantastic

6:45

Yeah, but it was the whole set and that's

6:47

the thing it was it was infused here So

6:49

are you pro Eric Church doing what he artistically

6:51

wanted to do? I am not I am pro

6:53

him doing what he wanted to do if people

6:55

knew what they were getting into And

6:58

what people were going out on a Friday night

7:00

ready to party and have fun to Eric churches

7:02

party and drinking songs I got over here with

7:04

Dan and he went up there on a stool

7:06

He sat there on a scene played all the

7:08

hits he didn't play covers. He played covers. He

7:10

didn't play his song I heard the whole set

7:13

list covered his hips. Is that wrong? No, no,

7:15

there was like a mass exodus when he started

7:17

playing He didn't he did you watch it?

7:19

Yes, he only played at the

7:21

very end He played one song through but it

7:23

was still acoustic. He made like trickled in parts

7:25

of other songs But he played one song of

7:27

his it was all covers all acoustic. He didn't

7:29

engage with the crowd He sat on a stool

7:32

in front of a hundred thousand people on a

7:34

Friday night opening night of a festival and played

7:36

an acoustic It hurts that and maybe and I

7:39

heard this argument on to talk to you He

7:41

played different when he watched it and it

7:43

did when I was watching it hit different

7:45

and to be honest. I'm Genuinely

7:47

like I know his songs, but like I

7:50

love covers I love covers and I love great

7:52

storytelling and like nailed the cover that he was

7:54

having a good old time up there Zach are

7:57

you saying it hit different like watching the stream?

7:59

Yeah, because I think in that moment you

8:01

can intimate and it's more intimate. Thanks to like

8:03

when it came out of the stool and there's

8:05

this beautiful choir behind him, you

8:07

can feel that texture and understand it emotionally when it's

8:10

really close up and you know what I'm saying? I

8:12

do get out of it. Yeah, when you're in the

8:14

back of the crowd and now it's nothing. Yeah, if

8:16

you're sitting on your couch, it's, it was good. I

8:18

was sitting in my bed, I was like, this is kind of nice, yeah.

8:21

And I was texting my friends who were there, I was like, what's going

8:23

on with our church? Like everyone's pissed. We

8:25

all came to have a good time and we're just like

8:27

sitting there staring at the sky playing. And

8:29

then getting like the intimate one and then the obviously

8:31

in person being a little different. The

8:33

rules kind of apply to sports too. That's

8:36

true. I went to a basketball game the other day

8:38

and like that thing plays differently on TV. And

8:41

actually I feel more a part of something when I'm watching it

8:43

on TV. I am into a Lakers game. Yeah,

8:46

yeah. For me, could be first

8:48

and last. I think my boyfriend's like into it now.

8:51

Like he's really into sports for some reason. What

8:54

didn't you like about it? Because you were far

8:56

away or what? Well, yeah, you're kind of far.

8:58

It's really crowded. You got to

9:01

navigate crowds. That's like really stressful for me.

9:03

Like honestly, it's so expensive. Do you know

9:05

it cost me over $100 per ticket and

9:07

fees alone? Yeah, that's why people complain

9:10

about that stuff all the time. It's insane. That's why President

9:12

Biden is working on that bill. Yeah.

9:14

Yeah. Thank you, Joe. Thank

9:17

you. I look forward to the day that we can say

9:19

we did it, Joe. Because that

9:21

would change my gaming experience. I just bought

9:23

a ticket to my friend's show. It's

9:25

for $21 and I spent $36 on fees and everything. I

9:29

love how it's labeled convenience fee. Yeah, there's

9:31

nothing convenient about that. No, it's called we're

9:34

robbing you. We're stealing

9:36

from you. Yeah, the robbery fee. We're

9:39

actually taking from you and laughing at

9:41

you. Inconvenience fee. Stealing fee. Disgraceful.

9:43

Anyway, yeah, but that was my question

9:45

about stagecoaches. What was Eric Church

9:48

doing? Again, sounded great. If I was

9:50

paying to see that, if he advertised it as

9:52

that, I would get it. Sounded amazing. Going to

9:54

have a good time. And

9:56

Post was very transparent in his set. You knew exactly what

9:58

you were getting on your own. your way into

10:00

covers covers covers except I I was

10:03

there in the crowd and waiting

10:05

for Post Malone to come on everyone's like that's him

10:07

and I was like no way I

10:10

heard our friend I heard our friends at

10:12

Nickelback did great oh dude they were sick

10:14

I was my favorite performance I watch Nickelback

10:17

Dipplow packed out the tent they were on

10:19

the indoor stage Dipplow had a huge crowd

10:21

too I was there it was actually the Palomino

10:23

stage Nickelback or

10:25

Dipplow both different nights is that

10:27

outside or inside? yeah it's outside but it's like a

10:30

tent oh yeah yeah yeah that's what I was saying

10:32

so when you see it on TV it's you

10:34

can see the the roof of the tent and I think

10:36

are there chandeliers or something? In

10:39

Coachella's past there have been but I didn't... I

10:42

think he hung some like there was like

10:44

a disco ball horse hanging out one of

10:46

them oh yeah no it was it was

10:48

fun Dipplow had like some cool dancers and

10:50

like this woman pole dancing who was incredibly

10:53

strong it was so cool to watch yeah

10:56

just fun dancing jumping it was fun all

10:58

of it Nickelback though that was awesome you got

11:00

to give our guys some credit they're coming

11:02

through again they're on the rise who

11:05

put somebody put a Creed song too right? Stagecoach

11:08

I heard yeah I heard rumblings I

11:10

love it I would love to go to a

11:12

Creed show oh my god I don't know Creed

11:14

cruise remember that's happening the

11:17

Creed... Come on guys that's right well you

11:19

guys will go with me right there's also

11:21

a Lana Del Rey appearance yeah stagecoach did

11:23

she appear on stage with the Beach Boys

11:26

yes okay I was watching the Beach

11:28

Boys performance and I saw this woman on stage

11:30

and I said I was like Lana Del Rey

11:32

yeah but they never like acknowledged Earth's anything which

11:34

is up there three weekends in the desert for

11:36

Lana and then Willie Nelson he

11:39

didn't bring out Beyonce I was waiting there

11:41

the cowboy Carter blimp starts going by

11:43

we're all like oh my god yeah

11:45

okay so I was really getting the

11:48

update there was rumors of Beyonce appearance

11:50

there's rumors are on Miley appearance no

11:52

I was hoping because Brandi Cyrus was playing so we

11:54

were all thinking oh me what if she brings out

11:56

Miley oh yeah Brandi Cyrus isn't there

11:58

drama going on with that family Yeah, there's

12:00

we were discussing this whole thing some crazy

12:02

like so they all do music It

12:05

sure seems that way I

12:08

mean it started with the dad my notes like

12:11

I need to keep track. Yeah, I thought brandy

12:13

was a podcast this turns out She's

12:15

also a musician. Yeah You

12:17

have a microphone sing yeah, yeah, I mean

12:20

I Got me doing

12:22

more you should start saying you have professed

12:24

how good you are at saying it we have yet to

12:26

hear it I don't know. I gotta get my breathing down

12:28

pat. Yeah, I'm Starting

12:30

to lose weight everybody. I'm back on my my kick.

12:32

Oh, what are we doing this time? I'm not gonna

12:34

tell you how I'm losing weight, but I'm going to

12:36

be losing weight, okay? Well you

12:38

said I'm gonna meet the

12:40

mic can I guess I was in quick. I don't

12:42

know to be honest I mean you don't know oh

12:44

you haven't decided how you're gonna go to a doctor

12:47

and let them figure it out with me I guess

12:49

so what if the doctor was just like do you

12:51

eat healthy? No, do you work out no and

12:53

the doctor's like well, let's start with these two Oh,

12:55

then I'll say like I would love to help assign I Don't

13:02

I don't want to put in the work. We're

13:05

flying rockets to the moon. You can't make me

13:07

lose weight tomorrow This

13:09

is bullshit fair about three months ago. I

13:11

did lose weight on my own Yeah, I

13:13

probably lost about 20 pounds. I wasn't gonna

13:15

have to do that. I

13:17

mean I just ate well I got it.

13:19

I wrote every day right right at

13:21

a rowing machine. Oh, I think that he wrote every day Feverish

13:24

writing Amazing

13:28

what eating well and exercising can

13:30

do yes Give

13:33

me the fast-track So long and

13:35

now I'm like ah I just out of

13:37

curiosity And I also like

13:39

always hit a wall so out of

13:41

curiosity. I'm like I wonder what I would look like Skinny

13:44

you always I've always what you've always

13:46

to wait you say it would I've

13:48

always said Yeah

13:52

If I get hot it's all over watch out

13:54

world the only thing that didn't work Do you

13:56

get see is my appearance? What do you mean

13:58

by that? Are you kidding? I got

14:00

great personality, great work Evan! We're

14:03

doing pretty well! The

14:05

only thing I lack, honestly,

14:07

is the ability to be confident and

14:10

look up. He's been saying that

14:12

since the day I met him. He is. What

14:15

was it again? As soon as he started, I

14:17

was like, I know what's coming. If I get

14:19

hot, it's over. No, if I get hot, it's

14:21

over. Because then I got everything. You

14:23

gotta understand, the universe strategically

14:26

held something back. So

14:30

if science can really disrupt

14:32

the universe just for a hot second, just

14:34

so I can see what I look like,

14:37

just so I can see, and then it can go away.

14:41

You're the one preventing yourself from getting there. I

14:43

don't know. I don't know. I think

14:45

it's deeper than that, brother. Yeah. And

14:48

that's why we trust in the scientists. Yes!

14:51

You know? Watch out, world. You do need to

14:53

go to the doctor for other reasons, though. The

14:55

world should watch out. If that's... Oh,

14:57

God. Just game over. Your

15:00

boyfriend goes to the gym. Why don't you go with him? Yeah,

15:02

he goes to the gym sometimes. Okay. Watch

15:05

out. Sorry, I'm just processing that. It's

15:07

a lot for me to process. He's

15:09

not gonna get my hands on this stuff. You

15:13

can do it. We believe in you. Thank you

15:15

so much. Thank you. Disappointing news

15:17

for any Taylor Swift fans. Taylor Swift, Travis

15:19

Kelsey not going to the Met Gala. Aw,

15:21

man. But don't stress. Swift does have the

15:23

top 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 right

15:25

now. Top 14? Yep.

15:29

That's pretty weak. I wonder why they're not going to the

15:31

Met Gala. I don't know. They got other things going on.

15:33

Quite too busy. Yeah. And Taylor

15:35

has a show in Paris then. Oh, okay.

15:37

Well, there's the answer. I feel like if you go

15:39

to the Met Gala once, you've done the Met Gala.

15:41

You know what I'm saying, guys, right? Yeah. There's

15:44

some return people going this year. A lot of people

15:46

go. Yeah. Taylor's been multiple times. I don't

15:49

know if Travis has ever been. I feel like you go

15:51

and then it's like you see somebody walking down the runway

15:53

with a lampshade on their head. You're like, I get this.

15:55

I'll skip out next year. Yeah. I Really

15:57

want to go to this? Met Gala one time. What

16:00

are your heart that the hell is? He.

16:02

I'd really want to go to the Met

16:04

gala one time to all over your Monday

16:06

resolves One. That's. Crazy. Think about

16:08

all the time. Though. It

16:10

James Charles going to the Met Gala? Well yeah, I

16:12

mean if you're it's. Didn't. Match

16:14

Gallegus percent with didn't have met Gala use

16:17

the road Geico really exclusive a list only

16:19

thing and now it's kind of become like

16:21

who's ever I mean hot at the moment

16:23

gets the invite this woman say yes and

16:25

not I mean hot. By physically hot zoc

16:27

I just me my to every pop and

16:30

gab. I think the pop even more when

16:32

I'm physically I. Grew.

16:35

Up all over a to have a

16:38

summer so on a blinder esteem would

16:40

suffer losses as you have to invite

16:42

us. Manifesting

16:46

the shit right here. Why do you want to go to

16:48

The Mack? Our. To. See that I went,

16:50

there are no actually have any other rigid

16:52

okay that crap doesn't want others Until we

16:54

were yeah I got ready the Met Gala

16:56

their hands were always or stars Garrison want

16:58

to be there because every time he hears

17:00

me talk about our yeah no as nothing

17:02

good I mean I really would go hobnobbing

17:04

thing and then like it's it's a networking

17:06

amount of odd, not a hob nob. You.

17:09

Know who buy those whose op

17:11

ed a naughty hobby who be

17:13

nabil. Or as though but

17:15

the answer to the whitehouse us not going of

17:17

people. I was going to be there for the

17:19

and mrs a cancer in Paris yeah the wiser

17:21

even discussion about it cause i wonder is a

17:23

dancer she should be there but it would be

17:26

amazing to see him or Sicilian Perry's. The.

17:28

Avowed, I'd rather see terraces in Paris

17:30

and anybody a mega honestly agreed easier

17:32

to decide chef right now Taylor Swift.

17:35

In Paris he have a meet you get

17:37

to be in the Vip tenth. You know,

17:39

whatever. Still sees it with the cushy Director

17:41

Sears. I see the photos. Or.

17:44

The. Mech Our. To. Summer now.

17:48

So. The question is, rather than like our

17:50

Towers Us concert or telescope concert everyday for

17:52

your life. Didn't tell see what he thinks.

17:55

Mack. Our. Ah, At gala.

17:57

absolutely as actually like followed

18:00

the mec alla really intensely since like I've known what

18:02

it is okay so when you at what age when

18:04

you were like three no

18:06

when I was like 13 probably like freshman

18:09

year of high school around then do you remember who

18:11

taught you what the mec alla was no

18:13

but I remember this girl Sarah Kaufman

18:16

she moved to Virginia she was

18:18

like the only person who was like really as

18:20

involved in it as me and we like talked

18:23

about it all the time and like ranked our

18:25

outfits is so much wow okay so I'm gonna

18:27

I'm gonna give you a hard one you have

18:29

to decide between the mec alla and the Olympics

18:31

you guys don't know Kelsey but she's obsessed with

18:33

she's one of eight people obsessed with the Olympics

18:35

whoa mec alla or Olympics decide Olympics

18:38

Wow all right

18:40

yeah obviously really oh Olympics over

18:42

mec alla any day interesting which by

18:45

the way in the chat it looks like Taylor

18:47

is taking it like 70 30 interesting Cameron where

18:49

you at mec alla or Taylor we'll go back

18:51

to the original uh

18:53

I'm gonna go Taylor easily

18:56

Taylor I don't understand why you would choose the

18:58

mec alla you would choose to go to this

19:00

event where you're just watching people walk upstairs exactly

19:02

Taylor is entertainment a three hour show but if

19:04

I'm like attending the mec alla I think you

19:06

would better our show by me

19:08

going and like trying to recruit guests I'm

19:11

in the VIP bar to attend. People would come

19:13

on the show and just sit there. No no

19:16

no you go to the mec alla you make friends

19:18

like haven't you seen all those moments? there's like a

19:20

dinner you're at tables it's a whole thing so you

19:22

would go and be like hey hey I'm a Chamberlain

19:25

hey Jack Harlow hey whoever Katy Perry call on

19:27

our channel. Well I make like actual conversations because

19:29

I'm not like a robotic loser and you're saying

19:31

you would meet you would meet nobody at the

19:33

Taylor Swift show and probably not got it so

19:36

you would rather go to the mec alla yeah

19:39

no no way it'd be way

19:41

more entertaining yeah and it's in Paris so I can

19:43

go to Paris and the Taylor Swift concert I have

19:45

a food sock I'm not gonna get into that. We'd

19:47

rather go out tonight and have fun or go to

19:49

the library yeah I'm gonna go out

19:51

and have fun no that's not the same like

19:53

if you're attending the mec out you have to

19:55

dress up you have a seat at a table

19:57

there's all these famous people around I have to

19:59

dress I'm already out. That's a you problem.

20:01

No, is it or I can go as myself How

20:04

I normally dress and have the party of

20:06

my life at Taylor show. Okay in Paris.

20:09

Okay. Yeah I respect you all for your decision. I

20:12

went to see Benson Boone last night He

20:14

did a show at the Palladium. I think it

20:17

was like a last-minute show to Will Smith was

20:19

there why I don't know Crazy

20:23

look I saw my own two not two

20:25

eyes, you know I don't know brag when

20:27

I worked in Nickelodeon at the Kids Choice

20:29

Awards the one that I hosted the pre-show

20:32

for and the backstage broadcast Diddy

20:39

yeah one direction performed Performed

20:42

Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift were

20:44

there. Did you keep his wife's name out

20:46

of your mouth? I did it's good Yeah,

20:48

but that's practice. He was there. He's at Benson

20:51

Boone last night. I gotta say Benson Moon

20:53

should be so proud of himself I've watched

20:55

him literally perform to nobody to the

20:57

biggest crowds right? Yeah I was just about to

21:00

say Benson Boone seems like a guy who's on

21:02

a track to perform in arenas He's already doing

21:04

arenas in certain cities. He deserves it. Yeah, he

21:06

is an absolute superstar the album I

21:08

think it's like fireworks and rollerblades or whatever. Yeah,

21:11

it is so good Please if

21:13

you haven't already given your time, it's

21:15

well worth it and see him He's a great live

21:17

performer and understandably try your wrap your mind around the

21:19

fact that he only started singing like three years ago

21:22

That's not I mean when do you come on

21:24

our show a year and a half ago two years ago? He's been

21:26

on twice, but he came first in like 2020 something.

21:30

Oh, that's cool Thank you. Do you think

21:32

he regrets leaving Idol? No, haha. Probably

21:35

not right? Yeah, he tells me what he he

21:37

left He walked away from it. Yeah, I left

21:39

American Idol He wanted to focus on the music

21:41

and then I think he ended up going to

21:43

like you were he with Dan Reynolds and that

21:45

Management company and he's been thriving ever since I

21:48

love Amazon music breakthrough artists last year I love

21:50

that. He left American Idol and it like worked

21:52

trust your instincts. He first came on our show

21:54

in June of 2022 Wow,

21:57

that's crazy. And then now look at him And

22:00

in 2022, when he came on our show, he

22:02

had only been singing for like eight months or a

22:04

year by then. Yeah. That's

22:07

really cool. So proud of him. So proud of him.

22:09

You know what? When he came on our show, it was really at the

22:11

spot where he could either go one way, become huge,

22:13

or just kind of start fading off. And he became

22:16

huge. And he became big. He

22:18

puts the work in. And the songs are really

22:20

amazing. Mm-hmm. I'm telling

22:22

you, this Hadi Seesaw music is having a

22:24

resurgence right now, which is mid-tempo,

22:27

live band instrumentation, that we haven't

22:29

really heard much of. I think

22:31

he's just really good. I love it.

22:34

Listen to it. Listen to it. What

22:37

else do we have here? Oh, Blue Ivy Carter

22:39

making her acting debut. She's going to

22:41

be in the Lion King prequel. Nobody asked for it,

22:44

but we're getting it. I've got to say, good for

22:46

her. She's giving me this movie. But is

22:48

there a reason they're doing a Lion King

22:50

prequel? Nobody's asking for that. Yeah, no offense,

22:53

Blue Ivy Carter. The bigger story is a

22:55

prequel to the Lion King. It was announced

22:57

today or yesterday, or the trailer came out.

22:59

It's the story. It's Mufasa's origin story, and

23:01

that's Simba's father. Yeah. Like, I'm okay. I'm

23:05

okay. I don't need to know Mufasa's

23:07

story. Like, where Rafiki came from? Where

23:10

the birds from? Yeah, I know. Where's the bird hat

23:12

from? I'm fine. A teenage Timon and Pumbaa? Like, we

23:14

don't need it. Cut it out. Give

23:17

me some new shit. I don't get it. Interesting.

23:20

It is interesting. The prequel. You're a big Lion King

23:23

fan, Dan. I like the Lion King on Broadway. I

23:25

like the music. Have you seen the stage

23:27

play? Have I seen it only four or five times?

23:30

Really? Yeah, it's magnificent. It's phenomenal. Gives you goosebumps and

23:32

chills. I want to see it. I'll go to New

23:34

York with you. You want to go to New York?

23:36

Me and Cameron go to New York. We'll see the

23:38

Lion King. Oh, yeah. Can you pay for

23:40

it? Can you pay for it? Can you take New York while I

23:42

pay for it? Yeah, we'll go on a couple weeks. You're walking. You're

23:44

walking the stairs in that gal and me and Cam will go enjoy

23:46

their time. I love that. I'd

23:48

love to go see some shows on Broadway.

23:51

I love that. So

23:53

cool. You're so cool, too. I can't wait to see it.

23:55

I can't wait to see all the other ones. Where are

23:57

the other ones? Wicked. Wicked.

24:00

See I've seen wicked would love to see it again.

24:02

We started a leg. I've never seen Hamilton. Oh, yeah,

24:05

not nothing much Okay, we can skip that what

24:07

else is there? I think that's it, right? Fucking

24:17

opera good. That's a nose brother family operas

24:19

closed. Yeah, that's never closed No, I'm telling

24:21

you they did like their famous last performance

24:23

fairly recently give that a Google those are

24:25

no these are the those shows Always come

24:28

back. Yeah, I mean I'll come back eventually

24:30

but okay, but he Big

24:32

deal. Yeah, it's not there. I ain't it was

24:34

running for decades west side story. I'm sure

24:36

it's running right now either What is running

24:39

a lot of time? What is

24:41

it hi Tammy? No, there's a lot of shows running.

24:43

Oh, I just mean, uh, there's a lot of stuff

24:45

and I thought Chicago Chicago. Yeah,

24:47

I'm actually never seen Chicago We

24:50

have a drag race star in that one. Yeah, I

24:52

just saw it at the Pantages. Oh Book

24:54

of Mormon still going Yeah, you got oh, I've seen

24:57

that one Harry Potter and the curse child,

24:59

but again, we don't know for all this before that it's

25:01

been running for off-riday for a long time JK Rowling's a terrible

25:03

person. You know, it's pretty cool. It's

25:05

gonna be do live-action TV show This

25:10

is very exciting like noise

25:13

Wow, are you auditioning? I'm ready. I was

25:15

that was my audition. It's gonna be a

25:17

one-hour drama project and yeah, it's Nearing

25:20

a deal to go to script.

25:22

So that's pretty exciting No funny Scooby-Doo is one

25:24

of those things. We just can't let it die

25:26

I'm cool with it every couple years somebody's like

25:29

we gotta do Scooby-Doo. It's like Ghostbusters It is

25:31

like guys let him go and Kelsey. Oh, don't

25:33

you have a deep connection with Velma or someone?

25:36

No, I have a deep connection with the whole

25:38

Scooby gang. It's my favorite movie of all time

25:40

is a live-action Scooby-Doo No, that's right. Who's

25:42

the best shaggy then? Alert.

25:45

Yeah, Matthew Leonard. Absolutely. Okay Who

25:49

is that the guy from scream? Oh,

25:51

that's why you like it No,

25:53

no, no Kelsey loves I

25:55

watch Scooby-Doo. No, I guess

25:58

no, I did probably watch Scooby-Doo before I

26:00

watched Scream, but I did watch Scream like

26:02

really scarily young. Okay,

26:05

those meddling kids. Are we excited

26:07

for this live action to be on Netflix? Like I'm here, but

26:09

the question is, like, is it a real dog or an animated

26:11

dog? It's gonna be an animated

26:13

dog. Not one real dog that can speak. Figure

26:15

it out. Yeah. I want Air

26:17

Bud style animatronics. That's

26:20

asking for a lot. No, but I hate

26:22

like, the one thing I did, did not

26:24

like about the movies, like, the Skull Island,

26:27

like those ones that you love, Kelsey, was

26:29

how illegitimate Scooby looked.

26:31

Yeah, I agree. It was a joke. I

26:33

mean, really, I mean, can you not agree

26:35

with that? Like, you see that and you

26:37

take that seriously? You go,

26:39

oh, that weird oversized, like,

26:42

hippo horse dog... He's a great dame, by

26:44

the way. ...has the ability to solve a

26:46

crime? Bullshit. That's

26:51

the issue with Scooby-Doo. Yeah. It's not

26:53

factually correct. There's no way a

26:55

dog would solve the mystery. I don't believe it.

26:57

I gotta say something. When I look at Lassie,

26:59

I go, lifesaver. When

27:01

I look at that Scooby, the anime of when I go, you

27:05

belong in a cage in a zoo. So

27:07

your take on Scooby-Doo is fake news, for

27:09

the record. Oh my God! Give me something

27:11

that looks real. Give me an actual crime

27:14

solving dog. Is that so much sad? Give

27:16

me believable. Like, do you remember those movies?

27:19

Oh, sorry. Well, Air Bud's great. Well, human

27:21

rugs, snow dogs, or like a... Clifford. You

27:23

know the cat when the cats like rule

27:25

the world? When

27:28

the cats rule the world? What's

27:30

the movie? Aristocats?

27:32

No. Come on, Kelsey.

27:34

You're a movie expert. I think you're thinking of Cats

27:37

and Dogs. Is it Cats and Dogs? Yes! I

27:39

was obsessed with that movie growing up. So good! I

27:42

look at those animals, I go, ah, this

27:44

is believable. I think they could take off

27:46

the furles. So you looked at that and

27:48

you were like, wait a second. Cats and

27:50

Dogs, is this a documentary? Holy

27:53

shit, I can talk. All I'm saying

27:55

here is like the technology exists to

27:59

get a more legitimate... looking canine

28:02

in replace of this like Pixar

28:04

looking horse

28:06

dog freak. I mean I don't agree

28:08

with you. The dog looked terrible in the Scooby Doo movies.

28:10

Sorry Kelsey. I

28:13

disagree but that's okay. I mean please vocally

28:15

disagree with me. Like what's going on here?

28:17

Like Dave has the opportunity to redeem themselves.

28:19

Do you not think a real dog should

28:21

be used in the filming of this movie?

28:24

I think yeah I love dogs absolutely.

28:26

Like employ a dog. I

28:28

love a dog. Employ a

28:31

dog. Dude dog rights. But

28:34

I also like watching the old Scooby Doo.

28:36

It doesn't take me out of it that

28:39

Scooby Doo looks like that. Like it first

28:41

like what else is the

28:43

content around us? None of this is giving real. Not

28:46

according to that. Well

28:49

that's like a confused because I also get like

28:51

that's where I was at with the Lion King

28:53

right? I watched the Lion King and I go

28:55

damn like this shit looks too real. The new

28:58

live action one? This looks like

29:01

the live action zoo at the six

29:03

parks thing gone wrong. See

29:05

look at a dog like that. I know. I

29:07

don't know what you like or don't. I don't

29:09

know what you want actually. I'm

29:11

torn. I initially thought

29:13

that that Lion King, the live

29:16

action one, was going to be like very

29:18

Pixar-y. And it wasn't. No,

29:20

no of course not. And it

29:22

was very real. That's the point

29:24

of it. So the question I have right

29:26

now is like do I want to subject Scooby Doo to that? I

29:29

thought you just said you wanted Scooby Doo to look real. I

29:31

do. Like a part of me does. Why

29:33

is Donald Glover there? Well

29:35

he's in the movie. You played Simba. Oh

29:37

that's right. So you don't. I don't know. I

29:41

don't know if I want a real dog to play Scooby or

29:43

I want like that. Like that's frightening. What?

29:45

Is that who it is now? No

29:48

that's the old one. The little island one.

29:52

He's making a weird face there. But

29:54

also that's like the mixture between a real dog and like a

29:56

fake dog. Right. Or do

29:58

I want a real dog, real dog? You

30:00

know pull up air but look how legit that looks

30:02

but everybody didn't talk that's not true

30:04

everybody was speaking words Wait,

30:07

there, but not everybody. I'll talk you just

30:09

play ball Yeah,

30:11

do we just shatter your world? Yeah, I

30:13

thought everybody was holding conversations and playing hoops

30:17

You thought you just like going to the court

30:19

and hanging with the guys. Yes. I don't think

30:21

you watched everybody I thought he was shooting the

30:23

shit at shooting. Yeah No,

30:26

I think this might have been an Arab a dream that you

30:28

had one time So that's why

30:30

air bud work cuz everybody wasn't talking. Yeah, everybody

30:32

was just teammates Okay, I'm just gonna leave out

30:34

to the experts you figure out scooby-doo on time

30:37

Yeah, we know a lot of you guys getting criticized didn't

30:39

know who that Sonic had to go back and reduce Yeah,

30:41

they read it the whole thing Yeah, a couple of these

30:43

animated movies had to go back and redo characters because people

30:45

are like what is this? That's true It was crazy

30:48

Speaking of movies though. I do want to hear

30:50

your review our very own Kelsey on Challengers

30:53

the news and day a movie that is

30:55

in theaters now You can

30:58

see the movie wherever you see movies

31:00

movie theaters Right and you

31:02

can catch Kelsey's reviews on

31:04

letterbox at pretend surfer because

31:07

she is a pretend surfer,

31:09

right? true All

31:12

right. I gave challengers four and

31:14

a half stars Wow. I

31:16

said If you

31:18

know me, you know I love sports and God

31:21

does this movie really bring out the best of

31:23

it This love triangle is

31:25

a game you hang on point by

31:27

point step by set match by match

31:30

This movie is a lot of painstaking story building

31:32

that takes sometimes a bit too long But

31:35

God is it satisfying when it comes to fruition? Zendaya

31:38

is so pretty and talented and excels in

31:40

this but God do I wish that Tashi

31:42

was developed a bit more Her character was

31:44

the hardest one for me to connect with

31:46

and at times was callous for the sake of

31:48

being callous rather than anything Deeper the

31:51

boys on the other hand are layered you

31:53

understand their motivations for control Josh O'Connor plays

31:55

Patrick with a palpable smugness that

31:57

really carries him through the whole film

31:59

with the perfect glimpses into things he

32:01

actually wants and hopes for. Mike

32:04

Face plays his perfect opposite in

32:06

art, overthinking everything with a clear

32:08

vision, but secretly wants and hopes

32:10

for control and power. Their

32:12

tennis play is very similar to the way they go

32:14

through and look at life. The

32:16

score is dissonant and visceral, at times it

32:18

feels so wrong and off, other times it's

32:21

building the perfect amount of pressure to make

32:23

you completely immersed in the emotion. That's

32:25

why when Trent Reznor and Atticus Rauss's names came

32:27

on my screen it made so much sense. Luca

32:31

Guadagnino made some shots and scenes look

32:33

so perfect and interesting and exciting while others

32:36

fall flat, end up feeling showy and over

32:38

the top, his direction shines in the tennis

32:40

scenes that make you feel like you're part

32:42

of the game, playing a back and forth

32:45

match of your own, internal thoughts. In the

32:47

end this is a story of true love

32:49

shared between three people and the sport

32:51

of tennis. Wow! That's

32:53

pretty good. That's good stuff, guys. A lot

32:55

of five dollar words in there. Yeah, yeah,

32:57

big, big ol' words! There's

33:00

one word you used that I had no idea what it meant.

33:03

Visceral? No. Can

33:05

you go back and reread the entire thing? I

33:09

think the word was dissonant. No, I don't think so.

33:11

There's another word in there I said, I don't know

33:13

this word. I feel like you didn't know many words

33:15

you just said. Smugness? Maybe. Palpable

33:18

smugness? That's a good duo. Do

33:21

you know what palpable smugness means, Dan? No, I don't

33:23

know. Smugness is like smug, you know? I guess you

33:26

can't use the word. You

33:28

think it's like standoffish kind of? Yeah,

33:30

I think so. Yeah, highbrow. Highbrow. I

33:33

don't know what palpable means or whatever that word

33:35

is. Palpable

34:00

And Tori from Canada and Eliva from

34:02

Mexico and Georgia from Sydney They know

34:04

that guy is breaking news. There's no

34:06

actual generational movie reviewer Do you think

34:09

of it like before that everyone was

34:11

like two thumbs up Ebert and ropert

34:13

or whatever the other names are? Yeah,

34:16

you know careful. Oh, there's sandy. Canyon.

34:18

You know people know where do we

34:20

go? I'm tomatoes. That's not

34:22

a person. That's a collection of people that takes

34:24

it You know the masses

34:26

opinion Santa Kenyans heads popping off his pillow

34:29

right now like holy crap I

34:31

all I'm saying is like I think our

34:33

generations Deserve a voice and a

34:35

set of eyes in a brain to see

34:38

movies on our behalf like a trusted source

34:40

We have one in her name is Kelsey

34:42

also known as a Letter

34:45

box Exactly. Yeah.

34:48

Thanks for sharing Kelsey. Of course

34:50

anytime really really impressive all

34:53

over my tiktok feed has been prom and

34:55

I feel like I Can't

34:57

talk about prom without being harassed

34:59

by Daniel You've just had this

35:01

weird obsession with prom ten years

35:04

and I just don't get it like

35:06

it May maybe it's like

35:08

deeply connected to my own prom trauma

35:11

Because like I went to prom with my friend who's

35:13

a year older than me didn't go to my own prom

35:15

didn't have friends I Connected

35:18

to that but also promise something

35:21

that so many people like they

35:23

share It's like a shared experience and

35:26

it happens once a year And we were on

35:28

the radio all over the country and I don't

35:30

know people at a prom dude Is

35:32

prom as important now as it used to

35:34

be I think so I

35:36

mean my prom tiktok thing is really

35:39

my feeds as prom of all over

35:41

it and like it's different proms It's

35:43

a school proms. It's like frat proms.

35:45

It's just prom season a Lot

35:47

of same-sex couples going to prom. Hell. Yeah

35:53

It's really cool. Yeah Jordan. Yeah,

35:55

was prom a big deal for you. It

35:57

was a decently big deal. Yeah, I'm an all

35:59

girl school though. That's true but

36:03

we also know there was an all-boys school nearby.

36:05

Oh yeah. I went to their prom and my

36:07

prom and this one baked me

36:09

cookies but said will you go to

36:11

prom with me. Oh that's a good

36:13

prom pose. That is really nice. Did you take anyone to

36:15

prom Dan? I didn't go to prom. I just everyone was

36:17

at prom and I just went straight to the after party

36:19

and was just hanging out there until everyone else got there.

36:21

Why because you thought you were too cool right? I'm

36:24

just I just I just didn't want to get

36:27

no I don't I don't know I just yeah let's not

36:29

back yet because yeah why didn't you go to prom? I

36:31

didn't want to like there's not a deeper meaning I know

36:34

you wish there was a deeper meaning I just didn't want

36:36

to go but there was a reason you didn't want to.

36:38

I just I don't know I just didn't want to go

36:40

like I just back then I just wasn't into it still

36:42

not into it. It's good now

36:44

that it's a man in your 30s you're not into

36:46

a prom. Somebody takes me to prom. I don't know

36:49

I just didn't want to do the whole asking somebody

36:51

to prom wearing a suit getting dressed dealing with the

36:53

limos and the photos and then getting to the after

36:55

party. I'm like I could just skip all that. Did

36:57

you not have anyone to ask? Line was out the

36:59

door on fort you know so I didn't know who

37:01

to pick. That was the class why I didn't go.

37:03

Yeah I don't know where to choose. Did you go?

37:05

I did go yeah. Oh that's nice.

37:07

I took two people to prom. Wait

37:09

don't recommend that. Right arm? Right arm and left

37:11

arm? Yeah so I took my girlfriend at the

37:13

time and then a friend of mine who was

37:15

like homeschooled for years because I felt bad that

37:18

she didn't have a prom. Wait so I'm still

37:20

a terrible idea. Wait I'm gonna be so your

37:22

girlfriend plus his other girl went at the same

37:24

time? Yeah. But what's

37:28

wrong with that?

37:31

I don't think it deserves that level of reaction. Yeah

37:34

imagine going to your girlfriend he's going

37:36

to her first prom. Like oh we're

37:38

gonna share with this girl who's homeschooled.

37:40

She's gonna show me all the pictures.

37:43

She's gonna dance with us. She's

37:46

gonna what the fuck? What

37:50

the hell? She's

37:54

like the funniest thing he's ever heard. Well. It

38:00

is kind of funny to think about it. No we took pictures.

38:02

We didn't have to take all the pictures together What'd

38:05

you say pictures with both like you come in and you

38:08

swap balance? Again,

38:10

I don't recommend it. I just your girlfriend loved

38:12

it. I tried to do it to be nice

38:15

and it was horrible Don't do it. Yeah. So

38:17

what was the worst thing about that? I don't

38:19

know not being able to like How'd

38:31

you guys dance

38:36

that's a good question were you in the middle? Yeah,

38:38

yeah, that was a slow dance at the three of

38:40

us We were basically a throttle.

38:42

Yeah You feel

38:44

the afterwards above them. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's after

38:46

prom. Yeah, for sure. Did she go to like

38:49

Three of you like go to the after prom together. Yeah,

38:52

everybody goes to the after prom together I don't know. It

38:54

goes straight to the after prom Boy

38:56

homeschool people can't go to parties, of course

38:58

they can Okay

39:25

See why it works Man

39:30

did you guys have fun at prom at least? Yeah, it

39:32

was a good time. What happened? Did you just get bad

39:34

news or something? No, I'm just still picturing you juggling to

39:37

to date that prom That

39:40

is wild Luke

39:43

Hemings is on the show today Ask

39:46

him to prom By

39:48

the way, do you go in was there something you wanted

39:50

to bring up prom? Is there something about my

39:53

feet like what's up with it? Like you going

39:55

like anybody going to prom? We

39:57

said we want to look coming back I

40:01

mean just all over my feet and I do enjoy

40:03

the fact that there's a lot of same-sex couples going

40:05

to prom It's really amazing and inspiring and yeah, even

40:07

when I was in high school. That was like far

40:10

in-view between Oh, yeah did

40:12

not exist Nor

40:14

did troubles that probably either but I was a

40:16

trailblazer. You were ahead of your time We're

40:19

ahead of time. Yeah I'll

40:21

take that credit. You got a prop. I

40:24

did go to prom. Yeah, you enjoy it.

40:26

Yeah, it was fine I had you

40:28

know, some things happen, but they were all good.

40:30

Oh, you what? Like

40:34

a little graphic, okay

40:40

Weird graphic like just

40:42

you know Wait,

40:45

are you okay? Wait, what I gotta be honest.

40:47

I think it back. I'm glad you brought But

40:51

not that kind of graphic You

40:54

let's just I was wearing a

40:56

white dress and I had some feminine issues Traumatic

41:07

I caught on really fast. So

41:09

like, you know good. Did you leave prom or do

41:11

you come you would happen? It

41:14

like like I said, I caught on pretty fast

41:16

So it wasn't like a tear much

41:18

of an emergency situation But it was like

41:20

really worrisome for about 30 minutes when I

41:22

was in the bathroom. Oh, yeah

41:25

But from that you rose I think we need a

41:27

prom redo. Exactly. I you know, I've

41:29

been pitching this idea for years So

41:32

the idea is to throw a prom for

41:34

anybody who's not been to prom or had

41:36

a crappy prom Mmm, and

41:38

you could be like, you know any age like that's

41:40

not weird and like That's you

41:42

just qualified by sharing your story of your crappy

41:45

prom experience Then you can just go to our

41:47

party and try it again. That doesn't

41:49

to me. That's just a party. It's like prom is like

41:52

Okay, a party's a party does parties

41:54

a gathering of people dancing. I want

41:56

a prom party. There's a theme. That

41:58

was fun Everybody dressed up

42:00

this way I peel your brain. I

42:02

brought you I brought my wife and

42:05

this homeschool girl No,

42:16

I have one boutonniere Okay

42:21

deep regrets about that I look like

42:23

a douchebag. Wait, did you wear like a top hat too?

42:25

No top hat, no top hat. I had the cane. Just

42:27

a cane without a hat? You

42:29

don't have to have the hat. Let me see a prom

42:32

photo right now. Let me see. Oh, yeah Let me I

42:34

just have them on my work computer. Let me pull it

42:36

up. I have a prom photo. Your

42:38

Facebook? I'll see if I can find it. I

42:41

need to see. I went to one school dance and

42:43

it's where the best photo of me ever Taken was

42:45

and I you know what I think that's why I

42:47

didn't go to a dance afterwards. You couldn't top your

42:49

outfit Yeah, have you ever seen that photo? Is it

42:51

you in the velvet jacket? Yeah, you look good. Yeah

42:55

If I can find one Brendan Urie,

42:58

but not like way worse Wow,

43:01

can somebody zoom in on this? Text

43:06

it to Kelsey or Sam Then

43:11

how we do it sorry, I don't know calling a

43:13

camera operator to come in If

43:19

I can find it Luke Hemings on the

43:21

way by the way, yeah, I'll be here in like four

43:24

minutes Yeah, literally gotta go grab him. Um, this

43:26

is a lot of fun though. Let's run to you

43:28

We have a lot to discuss. Obviously, you sold project.

43:30

Obviously five seconds this summer. Obviously a

43:32

lot of life I really like him

43:35

good guy. See I gotta find a prom picture without anybody

43:37

else in it cuz I didn't get the permission. Oh Do

43:40

you get their permission? Yeah Yeah,

43:45

I'm fine You

43:47

know out there face and I'll find it later and

43:49

every problem, but he got two days. So that's a

43:51

year Exactly.

43:53

I can't crop it. They're on either

43:55

side my god

44:00

What is that? Who's that a pimp? No, I

44:02

had to use a demeanor. Yeah, you

44:04

had to send everyone off. What?

44:08

Oh my gosh. Should we get Luke in here? I think

44:10

so. Okay. Yeah,

44:12

let's get Luke Hemings here. Check it out. We're

44:14

going to be in there with you. I really love and appreciate

44:16

you. Thank you for being here. And we're live Monday

44:18

through Wednesday on the Amazon Music Twitch channel. You can

44:20

catch all of our episodes on YouTube, all over your

44:22

TikTok, and wherever you get your podcasts. Validate

44:26

us and make us feel special.

44:29

Add Zach's same show on all social media

44:31

platforms. I'm Zach, that's him. We

44:33

welcome him to... Luke Hemings.

44:37

Yeah, scattered applause. What

44:39

is the first time that you've been here

44:41

alone? It is. The couch. The couch looks

44:43

empty. It does. We should

44:45

have got a one-stater couch, really. You're right.

44:47

Yeah. What does it genuinely feel

44:49

like, though, to care... Like, wanting to do

44:52

a press day by yourself. And I know it's not your

44:54

first rodeo. This is your second... It's

44:56

at least my second rodeo. Well, your second

44:58

rodeo, you're doing it alone. Right? This

45:00

is the EP attached to an album that came a couple of

45:02

years ago. Does it feel

45:05

natural doing these things by

45:07

yourself? At

45:10

this point, it feels okay. First

45:12

of all, can I say, I'm a little sick,

45:14

so I'm sorry for the listeners. I'm pretty congested.

45:16

So just keep it

45:18

in mind. You sound great. Thanks. Thank

45:20

you. You sound great. I

45:23

mean, at first it was definitely like you

45:26

have less people to lean on, obviously. There's

45:28

no, like... There's less

45:31

banter. And you've got to really think

45:33

about what you want to get across, because someone can't

45:35

just jump in and be like, you know, oh... You

45:38

forgot to say this or something. But it

45:41

feels good now. I feel comfortable with talking about

45:43

it, and I'm really comfortable with the project as

45:45

a whole. So there's no, like... I don't

45:47

know. We'll find out. But

45:49

there's no, like, something you could say would be like,

45:51

oh, I don't have any answer to that, I suppose,

45:53

at this point. But at first it was definitely like,

45:56

you know, a little bit fish out

45:58

of water, like... so much

46:00

of my identity is being

46:04

the guy from 5SOS and being in the

46:06

band. So not having that, obviously, is

46:08

a, you know, you feel a little bit weird for

46:10

a second. At what point

46:12

did you know you needed to tell your own story though?

46:14

Like, did you know the entire time, even before the band

46:16

was formed, or was there a moment where it really

46:19

presented itself? No,

46:21

I don't think I ever, there was no inclination

46:24

of it beforehand.

46:27

It was in, the first

46:29

album was made in COVID. So it

46:31

was, we started the band when I was

46:33

14, 15, and then

46:35

pretty much went until COVID hit, like

46:38

just tour album,

46:41

promo, tour album, like that sort of

46:43

cycle for how many years that was,

46:45

like eight,

46:47

seven, how long, how many years that was, but

46:50

so when we got to COVID and

46:53

was like, you know, the world was

46:55

obviously, as everyone knows, it's a very shared

46:58

experience. The world was in shambles. And

47:00

there was a lot of catching up for me to

47:02

do, I think after all that, for a lot of

47:04

people really, but for

47:07

me, it was just trying to reflect on

47:09

all of that time. And it

47:11

started as a challenge to see if I could

47:14

write songs on my own. And

47:16

I wasn't sure if I

47:19

could, and if it would

47:22

be any good. So I started at

47:24

home on my own. And it

47:26

obviously snowballed into something like

47:28

a full album. And I was like, Oh, this is really cool. I

47:30

have a full sound going on

47:32

here. And that's

47:34

kind of where it kicked off. And I really fell in

47:36

love with the process of it and getting those things off

47:39

my chest from just my

47:41

perspective. And it was

47:45

like really fulfilling. And I loved

47:47

it. Is it fair to say like it starts

47:49

as a challenge to yourself? Oh, 100%. It was

47:51

definitely a challenge to myself. There was not really

47:53

like a, I

47:57

don't know, this wasn't really like an album. The

48:00

way it sounds reflects that, the first album,

48:02

both of them, but the first album reflects

48:05

that it wasn't like a, you know, I

48:07

need, I don't know, to play

48:10

more shows on my own or I need to like, I don't

48:13

know, be seen more or something.

48:15

The band has like gone

48:17

above and beyond anything that I would ever

48:20

expect anything. It's not really in my personality to do

48:22

that, but I did have things to say and

48:24

get off my chest and it was a challenge

48:26

to myself to, I don't know, see if

48:29

I could do it on my own. What

48:31

is it like? I mean, what

48:34

story do you start with telling? Like, what story is the

48:36

first one that needs to be told? Yeah, that's

48:38

a good question. The first story that needed

48:40

to be telling, I

48:45

think instinctively, when

48:47

I first started writing the first album, because we haven't even talked about

48:49

that, I know we mentioned it last time when I was here with

48:52

the band like two years ago or

48:54

something, but... Great body work. Thank you, thank you.

48:57

But it wasn't, I think

48:59

instinctively, I wasn't writing about these big,

49:02

deep, existential things until

49:04

a few songs in. So I was more experimenting

49:06

with sounds and seeing if I could write songs

49:08

on my own. So they started as love

49:11

songs and personal stories and stuff like that.

49:13

And then it snowballed into

49:15

this diving

49:17

into being

49:20

existential about time passing and trying to dissect

49:22

the last 10 years and my experience of

49:24

it and my, I don't

49:27

know, memories of it. They're also blurry

49:29

and so much happens. And it was

49:31

such an intense experience that I

49:33

don't think I'd unpacked emotionally.

49:38

So that was like the first thing

49:41

to tackle, I would say. How

49:45

is that connected to the EP that we have today? The

49:48

EP very much explores childlike

49:51

behavior, your childhood or lack thereof,

49:53

right? Yeah, I mean, it explores

49:56

a bunch of stuff, but... Well,

49:59

like I said on the... that first album it

50:01

was there was a lot of self-discovery and

50:03

I really like I said fell in love with I

50:07

don't know being able to tell those

50:09

stories and shape a sonic

50:11

around it that I was like

50:13

because I really wanted it to feel I don't

50:17

know even if you didn't hear any of the lyrics I

50:19

don't speak English you could feel what

50:22

the emotion was in the sounds you're

50:24

feeling obviously that's what music is you're trying to get

50:26

across that emotion but

50:29

it led it led us here because

50:31

I don't know it's just

50:33

was that one of those one of

50:35

those things why I just wanted to keep exploring it like

50:37

there was parts about the first time I really love even

50:40

looking back now I love some parts and some parts I'm

50:42

like okay that that sounds like young

50:44

to me now like it sounds like

50:46

I want to explore the things I do like about

50:48

it and then see if I can as

50:51

an artist you should be trying to grow

50:55

and get to what the point of

50:58

the project is like what is get to the heart of

51:00

this is what it sounds like this is what it feels

51:02

like and this is what its

51:04

purpose is so as you make

51:07

more music for embodies of work that's what

51:09

you're trying to get to so what from

51:11

the album did you like that you carry

51:13

with you and what did you kind of

51:15

keep in the past I think hmm I

51:19

really like the song called a beautiful dream on

51:21

the first album I think is really cool and

51:24

there's certain songs that the first album to me

51:26

feels very experimental

51:30

like there's a lot of different for me and there's

51:32

one producer on it or you know

51:34

one main producer on it so it

51:36

does feel like a body of

51:38

work that is cohesive

51:43

but it does

51:45

feel like I'm trying a bunch of different stuff like

51:47

it feels like I'm trying you know let's try something like

51:50

Neil Young let's try an M83 let's try

51:52

you know arcade flight whatever it is like

51:54

as a bunch of different stuff and I feel like on

51:57

boy the new EP it feels more Like,

52:01

we've arrived at a sound as opposed to,

52:03

I don't know. Not.

52:07

It sort of feels a bit like ADD or something

52:09

on the first album. Which by the way it should.

52:11

Oh totally, yeah. I don't like regret

52:14

any of the songs on there. I think they're, it makes

52:16

sense. Like there's a bunch of different influences and I

52:18

think to get to what,

52:20

you're just sort of like emulating your favorite artists

52:22

and what they do best. So you're

52:25

trying to, I don't know. I

52:27

mean I'll probably look back on this EP and five

52:29

years and go, oh I wasn't quite there yet. It's

52:32

just one of those things that you don't know until you know. With

52:36

this entire EP, right? Like

52:39

it sounds like all these songs are under three minutes. They

52:42

are shorter. Am I wrong on that? Cause like I,

52:44

I realized that they were short and then I'd look

52:46

at the time really quickly and I'm pretty sure that

52:48

all seven could be close to under three

52:50

minutes. I didn't know that. I think

52:52

Promises is longer than the last one. Okay. They

52:55

are shorter, not by design.

52:58

Not by design. I just sort of,

53:01

maybe it's just my brain's pretty like, I don't

53:04

know, uh, gets

53:06

bored quickly so maybe that's part of

53:08

it. But it wasn't a, an

53:10

intentional like, let's make this short. You

53:13

know? I mean it flows.

53:15

Thanks. Yeah. I was like,

53:17

I looked at the times, I think only two songs are under three minutes. Oh God, am

53:19

I that tall? No way. Yeah. But they're

53:21

not too long. The first album was longer, to

53:23

be fair. The first album was like a little

53:25

bit, you know, you're pushing a little bit

53:27

with times. I just felt like the album, I mean

53:29

it moved. I only got a chance to listen to

53:32

it once and usually I'll listen to something way more

53:34

than once before somebody comes in. But I

53:36

listened to it, mainly cause you got it late, whatever,

53:38

no fault to anybody. I wish I had it earlier cause I

53:41

would have listened to it once. But

53:43

no, I listened to it once and it

53:45

flew by but I feel like it

53:48

was all intentional. And the lyrics really, I

53:50

mean let's dissect a little bit of it, right? Did you get a chance

53:52

to listen to it? Yep, listen to it once, just like you. Yeah.

53:55

You guys listen to it together? No. Separate.

53:59

Very simple. transient, nothing was planted. Well,

54:05

some of it, a lot of it

54:07

was written like in pieces and I think that's

54:09

what makes

54:12

it feel and sound obviously

54:15

the way it is because it was written in like,

54:17

you know, one bit was written here and then I'd revisit

54:19

it like six months later

54:21

or however long later. Can you explain

54:23

to me, is that a technique or

54:26

is that just happenstance? I

54:28

think now it will probably be technique

54:31

but I think it just was

54:33

kind of happenstance. It was just,

54:38

for me, for my stuff I

54:40

make on my own, there's a specific feeling I

54:42

get from it that is

54:45

not as

54:48

tangible and like, I'm just going to

54:50

write a song that feels like this. Like it's not a

54:52

frustrating way. I can't just like go, okay, I'll write this.

54:55

So it takes a minute to get

54:57

something I love that I've written just

54:59

myself. So it's,

55:03

and also the way I was travelling a lot

55:05

like, you know, the first song, I'm still your

55:08

boy was the first bit until the chorus, the

55:10

whole verse and pre was written on a plane,

55:12

like just in one go. And

55:16

then it takes like a

55:18

long time to recreate

55:20

that feeling to write the rest of the

55:22

song because you're so in love with this

55:24

like burst of creativity, you know, and it's

55:26

not songwriting isn't something that

55:28

is just like, sometimes

55:31

it is, but a lot of the time it's,

55:34

you know, elusive. So you're trying

55:36

to catch up with it

55:38

a little bit or trying to make

55:41

these moments happen, but it's

55:43

not always the case. Is

55:45

there something you're talking to when you're

55:47

writing those lyrics on that airplane? Yeah,

55:51

I think it's just, well, sometimes

55:54

with, with,

55:57

with writing songs, it's not always, you

55:59

don't. always know what you're writing

56:01

about until later. Well, particularly for me

56:03

anyway, obviously everyone's different, but I

56:07

find, especially

56:09

for solo stuff, that

56:12

is, it's like this rush

56:15

of subconsciousness of

56:17

your subconscious, and then you have

56:20

to almost figure out what you were talking about after

56:23

the fact. And you'll like

56:25

find one lines that just sort of fall out, and you're like,

56:27

oh, okay, now I've got to figure out what this means. So

56:29

it sort of forces you to look at it and figure out

56:31

what the song is about. So how do

56:33

you know you're entering a state in which

56:36

you can tap into your subconscious to even write something like

56:38

that? I think it just takes a lot of, I

56:40

mean, you don't always know, but when

56:43

you're, I

56:45

had made a choice at that point that I'm

56:48

gonna try and explore the solo thing more. So

56:50

I'm in the head space of writing songs and

56:52

like reflective and being

56:54

like overly emotional and trying

56:57

to, I don't know, you

57:00

open up the door and stuff flows in and stuff

57:02

flows out and some of it's, shit

57:04

and some of it's really comes out like

57:06

songs you hear that I think are really cool. Do

57:09

you feel like you lost a lot of your teenage years

57:12

to this job? To

57:14

this job? It makes it sound like I'm

57:16

in. So you're like pushing papers.

57:18

Yeah, when I was pushing papers. No,

57:21

I think, well, I

57:24

think, I

57:28

think the positives far outweigh the negatives. So

57:31

I always am very hesitant to talk

57:34

about the downsides

57:36

of it and all of that, but it is,

57:39

you know, it wasn't, looking back, it wasn't

57:41

normal, but it

57:44

sort of is what it is, you know? And I think

57:48

there were, there's things that, you

57:51

know, are a

57:53

struggle that have come from it or

57:56

during it, but I wouldn't change

57:58

anything, you know? So it is, It's a

58:00

different question to answer without, because

58:02

there's one side of things where it's like, this

58:05

is amazing and I can't

58:07

believe this even happens. And there's obviously things that,

58:09

it's like anything, like there's downsides to it and

58:11

things that, you know, I've had to deal with

58:14

to this day of

58:16

like, insecurities and anxieties and all of these

58:18

things that, your

58:22

brain at that age is not able to comprehend.

58:24

So it's like things you have to dissect as

58:26

you get older. But that's like anyone,

58:28

I guess, but it's just kind

58:30

of different circumstances. Are you dissecting all

58:32

that through this music, right? Probably, yeah.

58:35

Yeah, I think there's a mix of,

58:39

I think a lot of these songs

58:41

are coming to terms with getting to

58:43

your late twenties and things

58:47

getting real and life becoming, you're

58:51

realizing that life is moving on whether

58:53

you're, I don't know, present

58:56

or not. But

58:58

I can only talk from my experience. So

59:00

my experience is that, I'm

59:05

dissecting, to go forward, you

59:07

have to look back and for me to look back, it's

59:09

all those years of, this blurry,

59:13

like kind of surreal experience. Hello,

59:15

beautiful human. Every year, millions

59:18

of gamers experience IGSS, inadequate

59:50

hindsight is vital as we exist,

59:52

but like, what does it mean to

59:54

be a boy? Like, how do you define that? A

59:57

boy? Yeah, like in this context, right? Like, what

59:59

is? What

1:00:02

does it mean to be a boy? In

1:00:05

this context of the song, I

1:00:07

think... Or songs, because it's the name of

1:00:09

the EP? Yeah, yeah. I

1:00:11

think a lot... In this song,

1:00:13

you're sort of... Well,

1:00:16

I always struggle to talk about, like, exact

1:00:20

song meanings, because I feel like, especially

1:00:22

for this, like, it's such a culmination

1:00:25

of experiences and, like, little bits

1:00:27

and pieces of life stuck together.

1:00:30

And I like people to find their own meanings

1:00:32

in songs, but I think

1:00:35

there's probably a... You

1:00:37

know, it's in a... For me, this is one

1:00:40

part talking to my

1:00:43

younger self and, like, trying

1:00:45

to speak to that inner

1:00:48

child, inner boy. And I think there's also, like, a...

1:00:51

You know, speaking to a loved one and being, like, sending

1:00:54

apologies, like, I'm still your boy. There's

1:00:56

that thing of, you know, boys

1:00:58

take a longer time to

1:01:00

mature or sometimes of women. So I think it's a... You

1:01:03

know, I'm talking to my wife there as

1:01:05

well, you know? Is being in love and realizing you

1:01:07

have a real partner changed the way you create

1:01:10

art? Yes, definitely.

1:01:13

I mean, particularly... I don't know what I

1:01:15

can only speak for my own experience, but

1:01:17

Sierra's, like, my sounding

1:01:19

board. She's in everything. And

1:01:22

I don't think I would even have a solo thing

1:01:24

without her, to be honest. She

1:01:27

push you, give you the confidence? Yeah, confidence.

1:01:29

And not... She would, like... She'd be more

1:01:32

than happy for me to not do it as well, to,

1:01:34

like, just be at home and, you know, not be busy

1:01:36

and do stuff. But without her, I don't think I'd have

1:01:38

the confidence to, I don't

1:01:41

know, tap into all of this or be like,

1:01:43

okay, yeah, this is... I've got something to

1:01:46

say here and this is really cool or

1:01:48

have the confidence or, you know, all of that stuff.

1:01:50

How did you realize that any of this was good?

1:01:53

Because you mentioned not knowing. I

1:01:57

think with... I

1:02:00

think I'm obviously, I'm a

1:02:02

pretty harsh critic on my own

1:02:04

work, so if it's

1:02:07

something that I've gotten over the line,

1:02:09

then there's something to it

1:02:11

that is listenable at least. I

1:02:16

think, I don't know, it's just

1:02:18

one of those, it's

1:02:20

got to make me feel something. It's got

1:02:22

to be, I'm emulating people

1:02:25

that move me musically and

1:02:27

lyrically, so if it's moving

1:02:29

me, obviously they're my stories,

1:02:32

but if it's moving me in

1:02:34

a similar way, then it's

1:02:36

something that I think is worth sharing. Okay.

1:02:41

Which I get, like if it moves you, but

1:02:43

it is also your story, right? Yeah, that's what

1:02:45

I mean. It's hard to,

1:02:48

I think it's great, so if I think it's great,

1:02:50

I also think there's something about

1:02:52

this project that no one's, I

1:02:56

think I've said this before, but no one's expecting

1:02:58

like, I can't wait for Luke

1:03:00

to make, it's kind of like a bonus thing, so for

1:03:03

me to think it's good enough to put out, then

1:03:05

I don't know. Do

1:03:07

you really create this music with no pressures or stress?

1:03:10

Like there's no expectations? Oh no, there's definitely

1:03:12

pressures and stress. The first one was less,

1:03:14

and then when it becomes a thing where

1:03:16

it's like, oh, we're making an album, then

1:03:18

it's like, oh, fucking hell, this is a

1:03:21

real, it's definitely stressful, this

1:03:23

one was more stressful than the first one, but

1:03:27

also less stressful because I sort of had like,

1:03:29

I'd broken the seal of doing it at all,

1:03:32

but knowing what it was like the first

1:03:34

time to put it out and share those feelings on my

1:03:36

own, it was more stressful, and

1:03:39

having something to compare it

1:03:41

to was slightly, like there was pressure

1:03:43

behind it, it wasn't just like, you know, whatever, like

1:03:46

I knew what I was doing, but it

1:03:49

was, I don't know, it was

1:03:52

just trying to stress

1:03:54

less about it. Are you making this music for you

1:03:56

or for people who listen to it? Definitely

1:03:59

for me. Do you see the theme when it comes to five seconds

1:04:01

of summer music? Um,

1:04:06

I think a bit of both. I think, I

1:04:09

think you're always making music for yourself or

1:04:12

the collective of the group with the band,

1:04:14

I think without,

1:04:17

if you're not enjoying it, I just think if

1:04:20

we were hating it in the studio as a band

1:04:22

and not enjoying it and not making something that we

1:04:24

thought was really great or me

1:04:26

on my own in general, like I think that I just don't

1:04:28

see a point to it. Um,

1:04:32

but yeah, I think

1:04:34

you, I think you gotta, you gotta love it.

1:04:36

Otherwise, what are we doing? You

1:04:39

know? Yeah. So

1:04:42

can you like take us into the studio? If you're

1:04:44

making a song like teeth for five saucers shakes for

1:04:46

yourself. Like where's the difference in where

1:04:48

your brain goes? Um,

1:04:51

well teeth was a while ago now. Just

1:04:53

like five years ago now, isn't it? It's crazy.

1:04:56

We're getting old, aren't we? Yeah. You didn't have seven, eight

1:04:58

years. Do you? I think it's way longer than that. I

1:05:00

know. It's like, yeah, we're trying to

1:05:03

keep the, uh, trying to keep the youth alive. Trying

1:05:06

to be like, yeah, we know we're, we're still,

1:05:09

we're 19. Yeah. How old are you? Are you 30?

1:05:11

I'm 27. Oh yeah. Yeah.

1:05:13

Getting off there. And you're about to be 28. Yeah,

1:05:15

about three 28. You got the birthday

1:05:17

there? July 16th. There you go. Um,

1:05:22

well, making bands stuff, you

1:05:24

have other people to bounce it off. Like for

1:05:26

that song in particular, there was a lot of people in the

1:05:29

room, like four

1:05:31

at least, and you got another band member Ashton was there.

1:05:34

Um, and then when you're recording of Kalman

1:05:36

Michael, so it's, uh, there's

1:05:39

more, uh, I

1:05:41

dunno, you sort of just, it's hard to tell cause it

1:05:43

feels like a different person now. It's like such a, it's

1:05:46

a minute ago, but there's

1:05:48

more people to bounce it

1:05:51

off of. And I think at that point we were,

1:05:53

we knew what we were going for after

1:05:55

Young Blood and all of that. We had sort of had

1:05:57

like a thing to focus on and be like, okay, we're

1:05:59

trying. to

1:06:03

take what we liked about Young Blood and that album and

1:06:06

expand on it. Whereas for

1:06:09

my stuff, I mean the

1:06:11

process isn't different from my

1:06:15

end, but for Shakes it's like that same thing

1:06:17

where it's like you're

1:06:19

taking pieces of songs and trying

1:06:21

to pull it together. Like Shakes was written

1:06:23

in New York and it was just me

1:06:25

and Sammy who did the first album and

1:06:27

it's trying, it's like

1:06:29

was written, there's a big piece written there and then

1:06:32

it like took me a while to finish it and

1:06:34

I feel like with band stuff it's usually more like

1:06:36

you know you go somewhere on a day and you

1:06:38

finish it that day. It's

1:06:40

less, maybe

1:06:43

less picked apart. Interesting. But

1:06:46

you also have more people touching it,

1:06:48

right? Yeah, but you're sort

1:06:50

of just, it's very on the day and

1:06:53

instinctual, you know, and sometimes that comes that

1:06:55

good. There's also, there's no right or wrong

1:06:57

way to do it. It's just, you know,

1:07:01

there's also songs for the band that take a long time

1:07:03

to finish too. It's just like, it's

1:07:05

dependent on what song you're writing, but for,

1:07:08

I can only speak for like you know

1:07:10

the solo stuff that I've made has been

1:07:12

very, has taken me a long time for

1:07:14

every song pretty much and it's like these short

1:07:17

bursts and I'll have to, you

1:07:19

know, go back and try and finish

1:07:21

them. Are you writing things

1:07:23

just with no instrument, just like on

1:07:26

your notes or? It depends.

1:07:28

A lot of times with an instrument, like, but for some

1:07:30

songs it's just, it like

1:07:33

will just pop into my head

1:07:35

or I'll be listening to something else and I'll

1:07:37

hear a different melody over that song or whatever.

1:07:40

So it just sort of depends. How do you keep

1:07:43

track of your inspiration? Usually

1:07:45

voice memos or like writing on like a, because

1:07:47

a lot of it was, you know, on the move,

1:07:49

a lot of it was like in those random, you

1:07:51

know, like the hotel pads

1:07:55

where you write down with like the hotel pen.

1:07:58

But usually it's like. Just I

1:08:01

mean if you saw my voice members and notes and things

1:08:03

I've written down it just looks like a madman How many

1:08:06

songs did you write before you picked the seven? There's

1:08:09

a lot of ideas But there

1:08:12

wasn't as many songs as

1:08:14

you would think because I know from the

1:08:16

first album How long

1:08:18

it takes me to really love? something

1:08:22

that I have Like

1:08:25

to get it because it For

1:08:28

me when I'm writing stuff on my own I find

1:08:30

it really annoying if it's not fully finished to listen

1:08:32

to it I find it really irritating because it's not

1:08:34

exactly how I want it So I

1:08:37

know how long it takes me to get from the song

1:08:39

idea to that part

1:08:41

where I'm like, oh this sounds exactly how

1:08:44

I Envisioned it in my head. So

1:08:46

there's less songs than you would think so there's like a

1:08:48

lot of half ideas like there's probably You

1:08:51

know, it's probably 20 half ideas and then

1:08:53

you narrow that down to like, you know

1:08:56

12 and then it gets narrowed down but especially

1:08:58

working just with one person

1:09:00

like with Sammy it's easier to be

1:09:02

like this is really great, let's

1:09:04

finish this and There's

1:09:07

less like, you know Let's

1:09:10

write 50 songs. That's not really the case with

1:09:12

this because I know I know

1:09:15

when something for me is Right

1:09:17

or like, you know, even having we talked

1:09:19

about before but even having like Stereo Boy.

1:09:22

I I

1:09:24

had that first verse for such a long time and

1:09:26

I know I was like, I know this is really

1:09:28

great and this is exactly what I want to say

1:09:30

and The feeling

1:09:32

I want to get across but I just couldn't finish it. So

1:09:35

it's less Like let's

1:09:37

just write three more ideas. It's more writing

1:09:41

Seven different choruses for that song

1:09:44

if that makes sense. Seven different course or whatever it is

1:09:46

Yeah, I tried like a bunch it probably was seven actually

1:09:48

but just at home like it just will be You

1:09:51

wouldn't fully do them But I would like have

1:09:54

that and try and finish it at home like

1:09:56

over and over or wherever it was like in

1:09:58

a hotel Or on the road or something Do

1:10:01

you like send all these have ideas to your

1:10:03

producer? Sometimes. Is it just

1:10:06

a direct collaboration between the two of you? Yeah,

1:10:08

I'll usually I'll play it to Sierra sometimes

1:10:11

and I'll send it to Sammy and be like what

1:10:13

do you think of this and he'll be like

1:10:16

no or like this is really cool. So

1:10:18

it can be pretty brutal sometimes but

1:10:21

I don't know I just and

1:10:24

it took I don't know where the I really

1:10:26

for that song in particular I really wanted something

1:10:29

simple. I was getting really into the I love

1:10:32

the thought of there's a few songs

1:10:34

like this on the EP where I

1:10:38

was trying to say get across more

1:10:40

emotion with less words. So

1:10:42

I was like how do I just

1:10:45

say how do I say more

1:10:47

but just like it be one line and that's where a

1:10:49

lot of the songs came from like promises like that the

1:10:51

last song it's basically one line in the

1:10:53

chorus and I'm sure boys

1:10:55

obviously just one line over and over. Who

1:10:58

is the female harmonizing on Close Enough to Feel You? That

1:11:00

is Sierra. That's pretty cool. Yeah.

1:11:03

What is it like to be in the studio doing that

1:11:05

together? That's great. Yeah. Be

1:11:08

sick. That's good fun. She has such a good

1:11:10

voice. I'm like I'd have her on every song if I could because she's

1:11:12

a she's one of those singers that is

1:11:16

like just I don't

1:11:18

know annoyingly good like we'll be sick or like I

1:11:21

don't know tired and just like always be on pitch

1:11:23

and I feel like I have to work really hard

1:11:25

to be a really good singer and

1:11:28

she's so she's

1:11:30

so embedded in all the lyrics even if

1:11:33

a song isn't directly about her there's moments

1:11:35

that are you know if that song

1:11:37

in particular is like you

1:11:39

share any sort of grief and loss

1:11:42

and feelings with your partner because you know they're

1:11:44

your partner in life so she's

1:11:46

so in the lyrics anyway so it makes sense to have

1:11:49

her on it. Can you explain to me the story Close

1:11:51

Enough to Feel You? I know you don't want to talk

1:11:53

about it but is it a love song

1:11:55

or? It's it's

1:11:58

sort of like that feeling of

1:12:04

When something happens in your

1:12:06

life where you know some

1:12:08

sort of loss or whatever it is some

1:12:10

sort of life-altering thing and you Little

1:12:16

things can bring that up really easily and trigger it

1:12:18

and you can sort of go from like being fine

1:12:20

to totally falling off a cliff

1:12:22

and like being you know, I'm falling apart again

1:12:25

being totally back to that

1:12:27

feeling and it's hanging on to If

1:12:31

Hanging on to this pain is the only thing that brings

1:12:33

me close to you Then I'd rather

1:12:35

have that then not have it at all. So I

1:12:37

think it's that's kind of like the gist of it

1:12:45

Be thinking who's Benny cuz when I think of any

1:12:47

my friend has a dog named Benny Dog

1:12:50

it's about your friend's dog actually Benny

1:12:54

I have a brother named Ben. So You

1:13:00

know, there's it's in

1:13:02

relation to him but it's more about being

1:13:05

when something happens in your family or

1:13:09

loved ones and you know, I

1:13:11

live I live in America my family is all

1:13:13

in Australia and when something big happens good or

1:13:15

bad There's like this

1:13:18

guilt of like I should be there,

1:13:20

you know, I should really be there for this and

1:13:24

Yeah, that's kind of talking about that and just I've lived here

1:13:26

for such a long time and been away from them for like

1:13:30

You know, I see them intermittently but

1:13:33

It's not the same. Yeah, like when big light

1:13:35

you guys I don't know where we

1:13:37

all are from She's like some things happen when

1:13:39

you're far away from someone just like

1:13:41

totally it's hard to My

1:13:44

boyfriend's from Australia and I watch it like just

1:13:46

I know that area. Yeah, he's from Adelaide and

1:13:48

it's hard late. All right It's

1:13:52

a nice place. I love Australia. It's fucking

1:13:54

amazing. Oh, yeah, but it is so incredibly

1:13:56

far It's really far away. The time difference

1:13:59

is wild And he's challenging.

1:14:01

He's, and we're just witnessing

1:14:03

firsthand. It's really, yeah, it takes a toll on him.

1:14:05

And it takes a toll on your relationships to a

1:14:07

certain degree. Yeah, because it's like, you feel a little

1:14:10

bit helpless, you know, and you gotta like, because

1:14:12

I'm over here, you know, I've got my whole, I've got

1:14:15

a life over here now, and friends,

1:14:17

and a wife, and like,

1:14:20

it's a family here. And then when

1:14:23

stuff, I'm over here like making music and

1:14:25

like trying to continue this dream

1:14:27

that I started as a kid that they

1:14:29

support and I'm away, and like, you know,

1:14:31

when things, you know, big things happen,

1:14:33

it's, you feel guilty,

1:14:36

you know? Even the bad stuff, you

1:14:38

feel guilty, everything. Oh, 100%, the bad

1:14:40

stuff is even worse. Yeah, you feel like I should

1:14:42

be, like, should I fly home? Like, and it says

1:14:44

that in the song, like, should I be going home

1:14:46

now? Like, but you're in the middle of,

1:14:48

you know, doing Zach's hang interview,

1:14:50

or like, you know, it's more, you know, it's just like, there's

1:14:52

things that you're doing all the time. And

1:14:55

you're like, oh, geez, I should, I should go home. But also

1:14:57

to get home takes 20 hours. It takes

1:14:59

a long time to get there. Literally, between 16 and 20

1:15:01

hours on a good day. I mean, if you're going to

1:15:03

Adelaide, it's another flight out, isn't it? Where do you go?

1:15:05

Do you go to Sydney to Adelaide? I did Melbourne to

1:15:07

Adelaide. Oh, okay. I

1:15:10

went into Melbourne, then went out of Sydney. I'll

1:15:13

go again in a couple of weeks. You going again? No,

1:15:15

you know, a couple months. Okay. Just scared

1:15:17

everybody on my team. Is he here? Yeah. Nice.

1:15:22

Special, love is special. You do also crazy things and

1:15:24

you fall in love. You do? Yeah.

1:15:28

Did you ever ever fully announce you were married and just

1:15:30

say it on a red carpet and people were like, did

1:15:32

you have a wife? Cool. Well, yeah,

1:15:34

that one was, that interview,

1:15:37

I didn't know I was going to do any interviews that day. So

1:15:40

I just sort of showed up and

1:15:42

it was like, oh,

1:15:44

I was going to do some photos. And then

1:15:46

all of a sudden I was in an interview and I

1:15:48

was yelling into the mic and

1:15:51

just saying whatever

1:15:53

I was saying. Maybe

1:15:55

I had a couple of tequilas, but yeah,

1:15:58

we didn't, haven't announced it. I think. As

1:16:01

I've got an old writer's sake, you know, try

1:16:03

and keep some stuff to ourselves. But it's

1:16:06

a, you know, trying

1:16:09

to keep it, keep it true. We don't always

1:16:11

be picked apart, especially by wedding stuff. I feel like it

1:16:13

gets picked apart a lot by other people and I just

1:16:15

didn't want it to. That's healthy. Thanks,

1:16:17

man. Yeah. So, I mean,

1:16:19

love is really best kept between you and the person

1:16:21

you love, right? Yeah. And it just made sense for

1:16:24

us. You know, we just did, we just eloped and

1:16:26

it was, you know,

1:16:28

we had big plans for like the wedding and like we were

1:16:31

just, we're just so busy and we're just, we

1:16:33

don't want to wait any longer to be married.

1:16:35

It just was like becoming this thing where it

1:16:37

was like, all right, you know, we're trying to find

1:16:39

the perfect time, but they're just like, you know, a

1:16:41

lot of these songs as well, like talk about just

1:16:44

time moving on with or without you. And we

1:16:46

just didn't want to, I don't know, we just,

1:16:48

it suits us just to elope

1:16:50

and it was really beautiful. And

1:16:53

that's what matters. Yeah. And we loved it.

1:16:55

It was perfect for us. That's how

1:16:57

many people were there? Not many. There's

1:17:02

a service where someone

1:17:04

comes to your house and does all the paperwork and they just

1:17:06

like, you just say vows and... So that was

1:17:08

it? Yeah. Amazing. Yeah, it was

1:17:10

dope. Took some photos for

1:17:12

some K1 visas or some shit. We

1:17:16

got some photos. We haven't put them out yet. You know, just

1:17:18

want to like, I don't know, maybe at some point we will,

1:17:20

but I don't know. It's one of those things you just want

1:17:22

to... It's you. Oh shit.

1:17:24

Keep, keep something to ourselves. It's nice.

1:17:28

Slade should be. Yeah. Also

1:17:30

super mature. Yeah. Also healthy and I

1:17:32

don't know, it's really nice. Thank you.

1:17:34

Are you going to be American citizen now? American

1:17:37

citizen? Yeah. Dual

1:17:39

citizen, eh? Can you

1:17:41

do that? Yeah. Fuck yeah you can if you get

1:17:43

married to an American citizen. I don't know. I don't

1:17:45

know if I will. We'll see. Maybe get a, maybe

1:17:48

try and get a green card. That's pretty cool. That'd

1:17:50

be nice. I'm still in the, every

1:17:52

time I come back to LAX, I'm still in that

1:17:54

visa line, dude. I'm still in

1:17:57

there with, you know, all the, all the

1:17:59

tourists. I'm like, I live here, pay taxes

1:18:01

here, I pay house tax, like can I

1:18:03

go on the quick line? No, your Ester

1:18:06

renews every 90 days, dude. I

1:18:08

know, I'm with the Ester. So you have to

1:18:10

leave every 90 days? No, I don't have to

1:18:12

leave every 90 days. I got a visa, but it's every couple years. So

1:18:15

I have to go back to Australia or Canada or something to...

1:18:18

You have an O1? An O1, you know your visas.

1:18:21

You know your visas. If you want to get into 90

1:18:23

days' fiance, just sit the fuck down. I'll

1:18:25

consult you through the whole thing. Yeah, K1s, O1s,

1:18:27

B10s. What's a K1? I

1:18:30

think a K1 is for... Somebody

1:18:32

can confirm this, but I'm pretty sure it

1:18:35

is for an engagement. Like it's for a

1:18:37

fiance or something. Oh. I don't

1:18:39

know why you're looking at me. I don't know. I'm not married. Do

1:18:43

you feel like being able to do your own creative

1:18:45

endeavors? More than just for you, but for the entire

1:18:47

band, right? Everybody's free to kind of do what they

1:18:49

want. Ashton just joined another band. Does

1:18:52

doing these projects make you guys better band

1:18:54

members? Stronger members of this team that you

1:18:56

formed when you were fucking 14? Yes.

1:18:58

I definitely think so. I

1:19:01

think it's obviously a scary thing if you're

1:19:03

a fan or in the band for people to

1:19:05

do other things, but it's just about the way... The

1:19:09

intent behind them and the way you present them

1:19:11

to fans or more

1:19:13

importantly each other. I

1:19:17

think for a

1:19:20

band like 5sauce, it is

1:19:23

where there's four of us, and

1:19:25

we all could individually

1:19:27

write, record, sing our own

1:19:31

solo thing. We are

1:19:33

such full artists, and that's what

1:19:35

makes us great and important as a band that we

1:19:37

can do that. So I

1:19:39

think it's important for us to... Whether it's making solo

1:19:42

things or having time off or whatever it is, you

1:19:45

need to live your life a little

1:19:47

bit so you can come back to the band. It

1:19:50

makes everyone,

1:19:53

but for me it makes me

1:19:55

such a better band member. It makes me appreciate

1:19:57

the band more. It makes me want

1:19:59

to be in the band. band and it's a

1:20:01

way for the band to last

1:20:03

forever for me. Otherwise,

1:20:07

the other option is not doing

1:20:09

it and then having things

1:20:12

that you try and then when you're making stuff with

1:20:14

the band, you're trying to pull it your way a

1:20:16

little bit too far or whoever it is,

1:20:18

someone else is trying to pull it their way, we should

1:20:20

do this and the band should be a

1:20:24

collection of thoughts that's

1:20:26

been, that's what a band is,

1:20:28

a collection of thoughts for fine to be five

1:20:31

seconds a summer. Totally. And

1:20:33

by the way, and I gotta say, you guys can go and make your own

1:20:35

music and none of that music would sound alike because you

1:20:38

guys are very different from one another and you're

1:20:41

all different shades of different fucking colors that like

1:20:43

when you put together, you do get a

1:20:45

band that is so unique and can't be duplicated.

1:20:48

Well yeah, that's, I'm glad you think so, that's

1:20:50

how I feel as well. Is that accurate? Yeah,

1:20:52

I think, I just think it, I

1:20:55

don't know, we've been, we've been a

1:20:57

band for a long time, you know, and it's, I

1:21:00

think at the moment, you know,

1:21:02

I might not always do solo things, but at the moment I feel

1:21:04

like I have something to say outside of

1:21:06

the band. So I feel really, I

1:21:10

feel really grateful and blessed that I can

1:21:12

have that creative

1:21:14

outlet, you know. Are you ready to

1:21:16

tour by yourself? I'm

1:21:18

ready to. I've gotten over the anxiety

1:21:20

hump of it, but it's

1:21:23

definitely, it's nerve

1:21:25

wracking for sure, but

1:21:28

I'm excited. I think the

1:21:30

last few years I've been trying to do more things that are a bit

1:21:32

out of my comfort zone and, you

1:21:35

know, playing shows with the band are

1:21:38

amazing, but I'm comfortable in that role.

1:21:40

You know, I love, I love getting up

1:21:43

there and fucking pointing out being,

1:21:45

being the guy from Five Sust, I love it so

1:21:47

much and I'm

1:21:49

always going to do that, but I

1:21:52

love the idea of doing something that

1:21:54

is absolutely terrifying, which is doing

1:21:57

a solo tour. Like it

1:21:59

sounds really scary. But there's something,

1:22:01

I know

1:22:03

there's something great on the other

1:22:05

side of that emotionally.

1:22:07

And also I played, when

1:22:10

I first started making solo things, music,

1:22:12

I didn't think I would ever

1:22:14

play any shows. There wasn't like a thought,

1:22:16

so then one, because

1:22:19

of COVID and like two, because I just didn't think I

1:22:22

would have the guts to, I suppose,

1:22:24

but after playing a couple

1:22:27

shows two

1:22:29

years ago at the Fonda, it

1:22:33

was really, it was

1:22:35

amazing to see that the songs that I'd

1:22:37

made on my own meant so much to people

1:22:40

because it was such an insular

1:22:42

time for me. And like, you

1:22:44

know, I put the songs out and people are

1:22:46

like, yeah, this is really cool, but I, you know, I

1:22:49

didn't know that people, people

1:22:51

make fun of me for saying this, but I didn't know if

1:22:54

people liked it until like you go and

1:22:56

play a show and people are like, you know, seeing

1:22:59

it and being like, this is, you know, giving you

1:23:01

a visceral, like,

1:23:04

this is sick. You can feel it,

1:23:06

see it, smell it. Exactly. And it

1:23:09

was like emotional to have

1:23:11

that. And

1:23:15

I wanna, I put so much

1:23:17

into these songs, I wanna play them live and take

1:23:20

it the whole way and see

1:23:22

how it is. How are you putting together

1:23:25

the musicians that are behind you? Sorry. Because

1:23:27

all I keep thinking to myself is like, outside of like

1:23:30

writing songs together, you guys have been playing as a band

1:23:32

together for well over 10

1:23:34

years. So that's like a collection, like

1:23:36

the musicianship and the comfort

1:23:38

and the safety that exists there. Yeah. Like

1:23:41

you can't, there's no, you have to dedicate another 10

1:23:43

years with a group of other people to take it

1:23:45

out. Yeah, I mean, it's never gonna

1:23:47

be- The same. It's never gonna be the same.

1:23:50

I think, but that's kind of

1:23:52

the whole point, I suppose, to take out that

1:23:54

safety net and be like, let's just see what

1:23:56

happens with other people. I

1:23:58

have help pulling. musicians

1:24:00

together but it's just people I think are rad

1:24:03

and can play the songs and dig it,

1:24:05

you know. That's

1:24:07

a good criteria. Yeah, you know. How

1:24:10

are you even playing the drums for? I

1:24:12

mean, playing the drums is... That's

1:24:14

putting it very nicely. I

1:24:16

think I am

1:24:19

not a drummer. I think I

1:24:21

had a lot of fun on

1:24:24

this album writing

1:24:27

a lot of the songs with playing

1:24:29

drums, like, because I'm not a

1:24:31

drummer. So it's almost

1:24:33

like... I

1:24:35

don't know, there's something a bit more

1:24:38

childlike about it and like I kind of... I don't

1:24:40

really... I'm not very good at it. So being

1:24:42

able to play something in the writing phase

1:24:45

that a drummer would never play or like, you know, it's

1:24:47

played a bit... Shit is kind

1:24:49

of fun. So I

1:24:52

don't know, I can play a few beats and it's just kind of like... I

1:24:55

don't know, it's just something... I use the

1:24:57

writing tool more than anything. I

1:25:00

don't think anybody's ever said they write on the drums. People really

1:25:02

tell us it's the guitar of the piano. Well,

1:25:05

it's nice to... I

1:25:07

mean, I'm just... It's

1:25:10

nice to be able to have something else to sit at. It's

1:25:12

nice to be in the studio and be like, not

1:25:14

at the piano, not at the guitar. It's like you're

1:25:16

trying to... If you're trying

1:25:19

to make a whole landscape, like the

1:25:21

drums and promises, they were replayed, but

1:25:24

I played that beat originally and put

1:25:27

the big reverb on it and I was like, oh, this sounds

1:25:29

really sick. But it was like kind of... I

1:25:32

don't know, just made... If you play that

1:25:34

first and then go to something

1:25:36

else, it's kind of like

1:25:39

it's nice to do it the other way around, if that makes

1:25:41

sense, as opposed to like playing whatever it

1:25:43

is on a guitar or a piano or synth and

1:25:46

writing it and then playing drums. It was nice to go the

1:25:48

other way around. So it just was like a writing tool. It's

1:25:50

cool. Yeah. You build the beat. Yes,

1:25:53

build the beat. Do you

1:25:55

have a garden? I have a garden. What

1:25:57

do you plant? At the moment.

1:26:00

There's some blood oranges. Oh

1:26:02

some lemons. Cool. Yeah, yo, your lemons

1:26:05

are in season right now. Yeah, they're

1:26:07

popping off Oh jealous, you

1:26:09

don't have lemons. I do I have a lemon tree, but I plucked my

1:26:11

lemons Yeah, well, we've got

1:26:13

a lot. There's like it's kind of

1:26:15

you got a big one. It's well. No, it's just overflowing

1:26:17

I haven't picked that many. Okay, so you

1:26:19

have lemons you have blood oranges. What else you got? There's

1:26:23

some grapefruits. Oh, that's cool. Yeah,

1:26:25

there's some kumquats. Oh fuck Yeah,

1:26:31

yeah sick I have limes I got

1:26:33

orange. Oh, I'm not lines actually there's

1:26:35

no limes interesting I have tomatoes. I

1:26:38

don't have those either. I need to get into

1:26:40

that. I'm working on a rose bush I got

1:26:42

some roses. Oh, yeah. Yeah, do

1:26:44

you plant those yourself or did they like come? That's

1:26:47

all Sierra. That's amazing Yeah, that's her that's her deal.

1:26:49

I mean honestly all the videos. I'm just sort of

1:26:52

like I just you know reap the benefits of having

1:26:56

citrus Exactly

1:27:01

yeah, what is the garden life is I

1:27:03

mean there's more to that than just actually

1:27:05

having Fruits and citrus

1:27:07

at your disposal. Yes There's

1:27:09

more than that then there's more to life than fruits

1:27:11

and citrus That

1:27:15

song was written in It

1:27:19

was three in the morning couldn't sleep in

1:27:21

hotel and It's

1:27:24

sort of it's like a love song

1:27:26

to Your

1:27:28

happiest and safest

1:27:31

place like the place you love the most

1:27:33

and it's sort

1:27:35

of You know when you think

1:27:37

back on your life. There's like these big

1:27:41

beautiful amazing memories

1:27:43

if you're lucky that are really big

1:27:45

events and Sometimes

1:27:48

the memories that are the most visceral and that

1:27:51

you hold Dearest are

1:27:53

the mundane ones like Sitting

1:27:55

in the garden or watching TV or like you

1:27:58

know just talking with your partner at home It's

1:28:00

like it's not a, it doesn't have

1:28:02

to be, you know,

1:28:04

when you're younger you think like, you know, this big

1:28:06

thing that you do, like, I don't know, playing a

1:28:08

big show or doing whatever it is that the band

1:28:10

has done or like in your life, big life events.

1:28:13

You think those are going to be the things

1:28:16

that you, that flash before your

1:28:18

eyes before, you know, what do they say before you die?

1:28:20

Like you've flashed before your eyes or your whole life. You

1:28:22

think those are going to be the big things, but sometimes

1:28:24

the, yeah, the most beautiful ones are

1:28:26

so mundane. It's little stuff. Yeah. So

1:28:29

it's kind of like that. That's the story

1:28:31

of it. You gotta listen to Boy. It's all

1:28:33

waiting for you. All Amazon Music, all League's Music is

1:28:35

there too. What are you thinking?

1:28:37

Did you purposely go from like a really long album title

1:28:39

to the shortest one possible? I

1:28:42

mean, maybe subconsciously, yeah. It did,

1:28:45

people were, I did a lot of interviews in the first

1:28:47

album where it was like, it

1:28:49

was a long title. People were like, it

1:28:51

was a long. But I like that juxtaposition

1:28:53

of like longs, the shortest, yeah. But,

1:28:56

yeah. What was the first one? Face? What is it?

1:28:59

When facing the things we turn away from. Two,

1:29:01

boy. Yeah,

1:29:03

just trying to simplify. It's trying to refine it a little

1:29:06

bit, you know? You can listen to Bulls, by the way,

1:29:08

on Amazon Music. It's all up there. You know, we were

1:29:10

talking about getting older and I just realized the Five Sanks,

1:29:12

the summer album is going to be 10 years old this

1:29:14

year. Wow. Damn. It's crazy.

1:29:16

Again, you're talking about seven or eight years.

1:29:18

Like, it's way more than that. Yeah. It's

1:29:21

like a fog. Yeah, it's

1:29:23

crazy. It's a long time. That

1:29:25

is a long time. What do you think

1:29:28

about that album listening back to it today? I

1:29:31

think it's great. I do. I

1:29:33

think I

1:29:36

have loved it the more that

1:29:38

I've gotten older. I think I loved it at the time. Well, I

1:29:40

definitely loved it at the time. And then

1:29:42

there was a couple of years that I was like, you know. Too

1:29:45

cool for that? Yeah, too cool for that, growing out of

1:29:47

it. But

1:29:49

I think it's great. I think it's... When

1:29:52

I speak to people about it and

1:29:54

they're like, you know, that was the album that

1:29:57

came out when I was, you know, whatever it

1:29:59

was. in high school or doing this or

1:30:01

whatever it was. I think that's

1:30:03

really cool because I have albums like that for me.

1:30:06

So it's

1:30:08

pretty crazy. Yeah, it feels like a different person though.

1:30:10

It's like, it feels like a lifetime

1:30:12

ago. Well, you all were

1:30:14

really different people. Yeah. Your

1:30:19

fans have gone through the same exact, correct and

1:30:22

changed too. Yeah, it is crazy. I mean, it's

1:30:24

even like, it's funny because without bands that we

1:30:27

were sort of the same age is for a

1:30:29

lot of time the people that were fans of the

1:30:31

band. So as we grew up and

1:30:33

went through different musical iterations and

1:30:36

eras and stuff like that, and

1:30:39

our tastes were evolving, fans

1:30:41

were as well. So it's an interesting, unique

1:30:44

thing that, not that many people

1:30:47

have. Damn,

1:30:49

10 years. It is crazy that Don't Stop and

1:30:51

Amnesia are on the same album. Like

1:30:53

I was listening to them this morning. I was

1:30:55

like, those two songs could not be any more

1:30:57

different. We just started playing Don't Stop again. You did.

1:31:00

Yeah, and the last tour was actually, it was

1:31:03

healing. It

1:31:05

was good fun. Will

1:31:08

you do any Five Seconds of Summer songs on your

1:31:10

own? No, I don't think so. I

1:31:12

don't think so. We've

1:31:15

paid them enough on tour more, we'll tour

1:31:17

again. And you now have enough songs of

1:31:19

your own. Yeah, it doesn't really, I mean,

1:31:21

never say never. I haven't

1:31:23

made the set list yet, but I don't know. I don't

1:31:25

think so. It's not really about

1:31:27

that. It's more about self-expression

1:31:30

and if people are waiting

1:31:32

for Five-Sauce songs, then maybe this

1:31:35

isn't the show. Yeah, but there will also be a tour for

1:31:37

them. The band is very much still here. We're always getting a

1:31:39

tour. Yeah. But is that like a

1:31:41

conscious decision you all have to come to? Which is like, we're

1:31:43

going to go do our own things, but this thing will never

1:31:45

go away? It

1:31:48

is, yeah, we've had

1:31:50

conversations about it. We talk about

1:31:52

it and go, I'll be like, I really want

1:31:55

to do this. I

1:31:57

love the band. We're going to make an album. I'll be

1:31:59

back. At this point,

1:32:01

and then we'll make an album and there's like a

1:32:03

like there's already a band schedule

1:32:06

that's been You

1:32:08

know, rude So

1:32:11

there's stuff already in the works. Yeah, but the

1:32:13

conversation has happened. We're like you agreed that this

1:32:15

band won't ever go away Yeah,

1:32:18

it's great. Yeah, that's that's the plan. I think and

1:32:21

all these things are you know, it's by design

1:32:23

we've I mean we said this when we were 16

1:32:25

and no one believed us. We're like we want to

1:32:27

be banned for I mean, we're

1:32:29

so ridiculous things We want to be like the Rolling

1:32:31

Stones. We're gonna be here for a long

1:32:33

time and people at the time are like, you know Whatever,

1:32:35

you know, you guys are gonna fizzle out and I just

1:32:38

we just won't allow it, you know Maybe there'd be a

1:32:40

time when we take more Time

1:32:42

in between albums like we are now like this.

1:32:45

I'm doing something, you know, other people are doing

1:32:47

their things But maybe there'll be a time where there's

1:32:49

a few more years between each album But I

1:32:52

can't see it not being a part of my life And

1:32:56

we've had those discussions, you know Yeah,

1:32:59

the best thing about you guys is like you guys love

1:33:01

five seconds There's a lot of

1:33:03

bands that don't talk about whenever I see you guys talking

1:33:05

you guys love the band Yeah, it's awesome to see it

1:33:07

is nice. Isn't it? I don't know how people do it

1:33:09

when I don't like their band because it's yeah,

1:33:12

it'd be Definitely

1:33:14

fun. Just like a beautifully authentic thing

1:33:16

that was born out of like just

1:33:18

a desire to Make

1:33:20

some random covers on the fucking internet.

1:33:23

Yeah, it is it is strange,

1:33:25

but I think it's awesome yeah, thanks,

1:33:27

man, I think uh, I think

1:33:30

it's a We

1:33:32

know how unlikely it is that we

1:33:35

have all arrived at this point and how

1:33:37

much hard work has been put in and

1:33:39

how Just like how

1:33:41

rare it is, especially I mean for anyone but

1:33:43

like an Australian band to like

1:33:45

have that I Don't

1:33:47

know that love around the world and

1:33:49

that effect on people's lives

1:33:52

is just not Doesn't

1:33:55

come around very often so I think it's

1:33:58

we all just could acknowledge that and

1:34:00

be like, let's try and do everything

1:34:02

we can to protect this. And if

1:34:05

we still feel like we have something to say

1:34:07

musically and, you know, play

1:34:10

great shows, then let's do

1:34:12

it. I don't think it's a, I

1:34:15

don't know. We just, we can respect that. But

1:34:18

genuinely a part of something that was built at a

1:34:20

time that like, we'll never see

1:34:22

again. Like, you know, our show was born

1:34:24

17 years ago. You guys are

1:34:26

born, I mean, like, 17

1:34:28

years. Yeah, long time. Congrats. Thanks. But

1:34:31

it was at a time though, where like,

1:34:33

it's hard to explain, like the internet was,

1:34:36

not there was people using the internet because

1:34:39

it was incredibly democratized, but not nearly as,

1:34:42

as like, yes,

1:34:44

as easily accessible as it is today, but less

1:34:47

people felt empowered to use it

1:34:49

as a tool. Do

1:34:51

you get what I'm saying? It definitely was

1:34:53

a different time now. A bit back then,

1:34:56

but it is now. I mean, crazy. Yeah,

1:34:58

it is. I mean, where we're here in

1:35:00

Western Sydney, it was definitely, it

1:35:02

took like, remember we used to have to go to Ashton's

1:35:04

house to, uh, to record the

1:35:06

videos and his internet would take like three

1:35:09

days to upload the video.

1:35:11

It was just, it's ridiculous

1:35:13

looking back. Like we'll never

1:35:15

ever be at that

1:35:17

point in the internet's existence

1:35:19

ever again. Yeah. And never

1:35:22

get the creation of

1:35:24

these personalities and musicians

1:35:26

and whatever that like

1:35:28

kind of crossed between the internet and

1:35:30

what it could be to be mainstream.

1:35:32

Because back then, mainstream media took internet

1:35:34

stars and like they wanted to embrace the shit out

1:35:37

of them because they found that like this was the

1:35:39

start of something new. It's just wild. The whole thing

1:35:41

is crazy. Yeah. And there was like a, we

1:35:44

definitely, we

1:35:46

had a big emphasis on taking

1:35:49

whatever this like slight

1:35:52

buzz on YouTube was and turning it into

1:35:55

a live thing. We

1:35:57

were like, as soon as we could.

1:36:00

We were like, let's take whatever this is, how

1:36:02

do we get this YouTube thing, like we

1:36:04

want to be a band, we want to be like Blink, Green Day,

1:36:07

like how do we get that immediately to be, how

1:36:10

do we play live? And that was like, that

1:36:12

was the first big challenge, you know? Which

1:36:14

by the way, like, is the opposite of what most

1:36:16

people who get discovered on the internet want to do

1:36:18

today? Yeah, well, yeah,

1:36:20

I don't... It's true. It's,

1:36:23

why don't, it's crazy, yeah. That

1:36:26

was our first thing. Like, that was what, you

1:36:28

know, I grew up playing in pubs and stuff,

1:36:30

like I wanted to, I was playing covers in pubs on

1:36:32

my own, so was Ashton, it was funny, we never crossed

1:36:34

paths. But that

1:36:36

was like our first thing, like how do we, how do

1:36:39

we play live? That was the

1:36:41

peak thing. How do we get 50 people,

1:36:44

100 people into a room listening

1:36:46

to our original songs? Yeah.

1:36:50

But for so many reasons, that's the ultimate test of a

1:36:52

band, right? Yeah. That's what, that's

1:36:54

what I thought, that's what we thought was

1:36:56

like, the only way to do

1:36:59

it was. But, crazy. Well,

1:37:01

how cool was it to be on stage

1:37:03

at Royal Albert Hall with a full choir and

1:37:06

full strings? Like that, that show was awesome.

1:37:08

Thanks man. That show was so cool. It

1:37:10

was super rad, yeah. It was, it was a stressful day. We'd

1:37:13

never played, it was, because we're, you

1:37:16

realize how different the spectrum of

1:37:18

musicianship is when you're

1:37:20

playing with an orchestra. We'll

1:37:24

be like, can you make it be like, you

1:37:26

know, and they'll be like, do you mean like,

1:37:28

you know, this, whatever the word is, blah, blah,

1:37:30

blah, and E major and like this

1:37:32

diminished, you know, whatever it is. But they'll be like, they'll have

1:37:34

like an actual term and be like, yeah, do that. It

1:37:38

was great. I loved it. It

1:37:41

was a challenge to

1:37:43

pull together, you know. But we

1:37:45

did it. It was really cool. We just had done really

1:37:48

a lot of different things. Every

1:37:51

release, you know, the fifth album, we wanted to do

1:37:54

something different and it was, we

1:37:56

pulled it off. But also something that afforded to

1:37:58

everybody, you know. Pretty fucking cool. Thanks.

1:38:02

Sick. You should relive it

1:38:04

all on Amazon. You just listen to live

1:38:06

stuff. The entire justography is waiting for you.

1:38:08

There's a link below. Tor kicks off two

1:38:11

days after my birthday in Paris. Wow. You

1:38:13

gonna be there? I wish. I just

1:38:15

was in Paris. Were you? Yeah, it's

1:38:18

nice. It's whatever. It's

1:38:20

nice. It's old. Don't

1:38:23

Americans love Paris? No, no. Maybe

1:38:26

Paris doesn't love Americans. I do that.

1:38:30

It's really nice though to me. They were? Yeah.

1:38:32

I always found it to be nice. They don't like when you

1:38:34

try to speak the language as much because you always butcher it.

1:38:37

Not you, but as in like we

1:38:39

as non-Pareasian speakers.

1:38:41

The universally, I can't do

1:38:43

that. That's bad, but I do

1:38:45

try to immerse myself in culture when I travel

1:38:47

places and I will try to figure out the

1:38:49

basic language. And then sometimes I totally

1:38:51

fucking up. The other day I

1:38:53

thought I was confident in my very limited Japanese

1:38:55

ability. And we had a J-pop group come in

1:38:58

here and I greeted them by saying, thank you,

1:39:00

welcome. Well, I greeted them by saying, thank you

1:39:02

very much. I

1:39:04

was like, Namagase-o. No,

1:39:07

that's not fucking, that's wrong. They

1:39:09

laughed at me. I've only got like, hello and

1:39:11

how you doing in

1:39:14

so many different languages that it's just like, I

1:39:17

don't even, I get mixed up and that's the

1:39:19

worst. You've been everywhere though. I've

1:39:21

been to a couple places, yeah. But

1:39:24

it definitely, I still don't know

1:39:26

like a full language. I was not there long enough to like

1:39:29

get like a, you get a taste of

1:39:31

it and then you move on. Yeah, you're there for a day. Why

1:39:34

do you pick Paris to start this thing? I

1:39:38

think it was probably just the best routing.

1:39:41

I got it, I got it. Please sense. Yeah,

1:39:45

that's it. I wish there was a big reason. I do

1:39:47

love Paris and I think hopefully

1:39:50

they're, you know, a kind

1:39:53

audience for our first show. Will your wife be with

1:39:55

you on the road? She

1:39:58

should be, yeah. Well, she will be. Yeah,

1:40:00

that's the plan. That's really cool to have a partner

1:40:02

that you can share something like this with. It is.

1:40:04

Yeah. Special. What

1:40:07

are you thinking? I just remembered that we forgot

1:40:09

to ask about your phones that you walked into.

1:40:11

And like... He elates it. Do you have a

1:40:13

flip phone? Yeah, well... I

1:40:15

have... You know... The

1:40:18

all-encompassing iPhone. Yeah, computer

1:40:20

in my pocket. But I also have been... I

1:40:22

have this because it's release week, so I gotta

1:40:24

be on my phone. Got it. But what I've

1:40:26

been doing... Is this old thing...

1:40:29

The flip phone? Is it like a Nokia? It's

1:40:31

a... I don't know what this

1:40:33

is. Sonim? Sonim? Okay, of course. That's

1:40:36

a... You know. Full-on flip phone. Well,

1:40:38

I want... I wanted something that I could like

1:40:40

go... To dinner. Or

1:40:43

like... Leave the house. And if

1:40:45

my mom wants to call me or... Sierra

1:40:48

or like... You know. Someone... Anyone

1:40:50

that... If there's an emergency, they can call

1:40:52

me. But I don't have to like be... You

1:40:55

know, doing this. On my phone all the

1:40:57

time. Healthy. You have like a

1:40:59

phone for emergencies. Exactly. The bat phone. That's

1:41:01

cool. But you have two different numbers though.

1:41:04

Yes. And the important people get the flip phone number.

1:41:06

Yeah. Yeah, if you play your cards right, you

1:41:08

get the flip phone number. Was

1:41:11

there a moment where you're like, I need two phones and one of

1:41:13

them needs to be a flip? Well, I

1:41:15

just... Have honestly always missed... This...

1:41:19

This thing. Like I grew up in the flip

1:41:21

phone... Slide phone era. And...

1:41:23

It's so satisfying. But... I

1:41:26

think... I don't know.

1:41:28

There's just something about... There's so

1:41:30

much like... Emphasis like... It's

1:41:32

so crazy. That all...

1:41:35

Apart from like, you know, in person and

1:41:37

shows and... Like

1:41:39

physical stuff. There's... All my

1:41:42

work is done like on this box.

1:41:45

Like internet stuff. Emails,

1:41:47

texts. Like it's all in

1:41:49

my phone. Terrifying. And it's just like...

1:41:52

So crazy. I mean, everyone's like that now. I

1:41:54

just... Sometimes it's nice to not... Have

1:41:56

that. And

1:41:59

just wanted to... You know, I'm always talking

1:42:01

about getting off my phone more and I was like, you know,

1:42:03

I'm just gonna get a flip phone I'm just gonna see

1:42:05

what it's like and I

1:42:08

haven't got to use it that much yet because

1:42:10

I've been Doing so much

1:42:12

work stuff and if I leave my phone for a while, there's like

1:42:15

a disaster of like We

1:42:17

need to do this right now. We need this But

1:42:20

uh, I'm hoping to use it in

1:42:23

the future more. I'm looking forward to this

1:42:25

for you. Thank you It's exciting,

1:42:27

you know get lost in the the

1:42:29

wilderness Be out there you ever done that left the

1:42:31

house that your phone and like gone somewhere. It's weird.

1:42:33

It's so weird It's like all you can think about

1:42:36

it. I know you don't have a phone It is

1:42:38

strange you realize how much you pull it out of

1:42:41

like in like an el of like an awkward situation

1:42:43

Yeah, so they were like waiting for the interview to

1:42:45

start you ain't play your phone and it's like, you

1:42:47

know We chat because we're you know, we know we're

1:42:49

good vibes, but we know each

1:42:52

other but it is weird that you like reliant so

1:42:54

much Yeah, it is a crutch. It's

1:42:56

certainly a crutch But uh, you

1:42:58

know just sounded like a boomer over here We

1:43:02

all sounds old You

1:43:04

good. I have two more questions. I just thought

1:43:06

of them one. Okay, she do the makeup How

1:43:08

does that play into this boy era? Looks

1:43:13

good. Thanks. It does did it myself Well

1:43:18

the makeup things been going on for a while I just

1:43:21

love Trying to make

1:43:23

every possible aspect of my life creative in some

1:43:26

way And it's just a bit of fun. I'm

1:43:28

not the best at it, but

1:43:30

it makes me feel good. It kind of like allows

1:43:33

me to Especially for stage like

1:43:35

get into a character or like builder

1:43:38

You know the cover of the EP like is me

1:43:40

with some sort of similar makeup to this but

1:43:43

a bit more intense Yeah,

1:43:46

it just makes me feel good and I like I Don't

1:43:48

know. It's a bit of fun. It's a bit like kind

1:43:51

of messy and I don't know kind of like my outfits Just

1:43:53

like a little bit thrown together and I

1:43:55

just but also still put together at the same time.

1:43:57

It's we thanks Just trying to get trying to Get

1:44:01

the thrown together, put together thing

1:44:03

going. But yeah, it just

1:44:06

makes you feel good really. He gives Rockstar.

1:44:09

Thanks. I'm here for it. Next

1:44:11

question. My last question, I hope it was a good question to end

1:44:13

it on, but like how's Callum? How's

1:44:15

Callum? Yeah. Where is he? I

1:44:17

just saw him the other day. We had dinner. He's

1:44:20

good. He's good? He's good. You

1:44:22

know like Ashton's doing the music thing, likes being

1:44:24

a dad and then Callum, it's like where's Callum?

1:44:26

Yeah, I think, I don't know, maybe he'll be

1:44:29

sitting there at some point. I think he's

1:44:32

doing good. Such a, I think

1:44:34

he's, you know, I don't want to give away too much of what

1:44:37

he's working on or what he's doing, but he's, I

1:44:39

don't know what he's doing apart

1:44:42

from just hanging out at the moment. He doesn't give too

1:44:44

much away that guy. But I missed

1:44:46

him. It was good to see him the other

1:44:48

day. Yeah. Is

1:44:50

that how you guys just hang out now? It's just dinners

1:44:52

and... Yeah, it does sound pretty

1:44:54

old school, doesn't it? It's not that cool.

1:44:57

We just got dinner, yeah. Went to Craig's.

1:45:01

Yeah, pretty much. We'll like do, you know,

1:45:05

I send a lot of memes to Callum or I send

1:45:07

like a lot of funny random things to him. But

1:45:11

yeah, that's usually it. Dinners, sometimes

1:45:14

phone calls, sometimes Zooms, mostly like,

1:45:16

you know, texts now and then,

1:45:18

but we did like

1:45:20

two back-to-back world tours, so it was like too

1:45:22

much. It's a lot of them. It

1:45:24

wasn't that, even though it was too much, it's so funny.

1:45:28

We're so good at touring as a band now that

1:45:30

it's like, obviously

1:45:32

you take space, never has our own life, but it's not

1:45:34

because we're like sick of each other. It's just because you

1:45:37

need to do something different. Like you need to like have

1:45:39

your own little, you know, we all have

1:45:41

our own little worlds now. And it's

1:45:44

really rad to like, it's nice to catch up.

1:45:46

You know, we lived together

1:45:49

all the time for so many years that

1:45:51

it's nice to like, you know, see each

1:45:53

other on, you

1:45:55

know, with bigger spaces in between and like

1:45:57

catch up, you know, what's been going on? What

1:46:00

a wild thing to say, like you guys are so good at

1:46:02

touring now. Like there must have been a moment in the throes

1:46:04

of this thing where you never thought you guys could get to

1:46:06

a point where you could do this in a healthy way. I

1:46:10

mean, yeah, I suppose so. It

1:46:13

is, you just get better at it, I suppose. And

1:46:16

I think you

1:46:19

have a bit more respect for yourself and like your

1:46:22

mental health a bit more. As

1:46:24

we've gotten older, you

1:46:26

understand what you need to

1:46:29

mentally survive it. Otherwise

1:46:32

you have such a, if you get off tour and you

1:46:34

haven't been taken care of yourself physically,

1:46:36

mentally, then it's such a long time

1:46:38

to get back to like, you

1:46:40

know, ground zero of like feeling

1:46:43

good again. So it just, you know, takes a

1:46:46

while to get there. Well, Cozy

1:46:48

Luchantour this time around by himself, May

1:46:50

4th, it starts in Paris, calling

1:46:53

to all the people in France, go.

1:46:56

They see a show, there's a link below. You

1:46:58

good? Yeah, I'm going to go through the show

1:47:00

when it's here. Come to LA shows. Yeah, I want to come see

1:47:02

it. June something. June 6th? That makes

1:47:04

sense to me. Well, whatever that is. I could have

1:47:06

said anything. I'm going to put a link below. You

1:47:08

give him a second? That's a little bit too far.

1:47:11

All this music is waiting for you on Amazon Music.

1:47:13

Stand the code, click the link. I appreciate you, sir.

1:47:15

Oh, thanks for having me. Literally anytime. You're fucking amazing.

1:47:17

Hell yeah. Luke Hemings, everybody. Scanning the polls.
