We talk to real people who found themselves in extremely unusual situations, and ask them "What was that like?" Have you ever been listening to someone telling a story, maybe a true story about something that happened to them, and what they were saying was just so incredible you could hardly believe it? Or maybe you’re driving along in your car listening to a podcast, or maybe you’re listening to someone talking on the radio, and what they’re talking about is really intriguing, and even though you’ve actually gotten back home and you’re sitting in your driveway, you can’t turn it off and get out of the car, because you just have to hear the rest of it. That’s the kind of story I want to have on each episode of this podcast. On this show, I’ll be having a conversation with someone who has found themselves in an extremely unusual situation. A situation that they never expected to be in, but there they were. Maybe the spot was a scary one, like they were taken hostage during a bank robbery, or maybe they survived a plane crash. Or maybe it’s a really happy situation, like they won millions of dollars in the lottery. The possibilities are endless, because there are so many people with so many incredible stories out there. Whatever my guest has been through, I want to get them to tell that story. I have a natural curiosity so I have lots of questions to ask. My goal, just like the name of this podcast, is to find out – What Was That Like.

This is the story of a mass-murder that divided a nation - a story that began in a rickety old home on a cold June morning in 1994, where five members of a seemingly ordinary New Zealand family were gunned down. There were two suspects. One lay dead from a single bullet to the head. The other was the only survivor: David Bain. Since then the country has asked: who killed the Bain family? David or his father Robin? In this podcast, Martin van Beynen explores the case from start to finish, picking through evidence, the mysteries and motives, and interviewing never-before-spoken-to witnesses. He seeks to finally answer the question: Who was the killer?

Come with us as we stumble our way through a plethora of topics from true crime, wars, conspiracies, history, literature and anything and everything we deem worthy of the Carousel Sniper Victim treatment. Shallow, heavily tangent laden, poorly researched discussions. But, by Zeus, We edit them well and pretend to give the illusion of knowing stuff about things... The first episode is a narrated timeline, scored with custom backing music by our sound designer. The second episode is a slightly intoxicated, somewhat drunken stumble towards the truth as we breakdown the topic in greater detail and go off on wild drifting tangents. Ready to share a laugh, a beer and some poorly researched fact we think we remember? Join us, as we attempt to comprehend the weird, wonderful, and sometimes dark world around us. Much love, Jack and Shaun Carousel Sniper Victim.
