Emily Prokop

Host, Producer & Editor of The Story Behind & Host of Hate to Weight
Emily Prokop holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and has worked in newspapers, magazines, and publishing, and has always loved trivia, fun facts and useless knowledge. In 2015, she and her friend James decided to use their penchant for collecting trivia by hosting the Classy Little Podcast. When that show ended a year later, the trivia started building up in her brain again, not to mention countless time spent falling down Google rabbit holes. She has also written a book based on the podcast, aptly titles "The Story Behind."

Emily tries so hard for a pun … it does not go well. We refer to Emily’s very first podcast, Classy Little Podcast. John is jamming to Janet. (Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty.) Back in the day, John was Funky Cold Jamingo. Do you have an air fryer? What do you think? Taco Bell, what is going on with your menu? You don’t need chicken! Do you pick a word of the year? Staying Accountable to Your Diet During the Holidays
We couldn’t get on Facebook for the Live Show, bu we still recorded. We actually recorded on Thanksgiving, before the feast, which worked out well for the weigh-in. John has some big news for us  —he has been cleared by his therapist for weight-loss surgery! Yay! He also gives us a quick Dude Cooking recipe for vegetable soup and we talk about getting more vegetables in, even though it’s been too cold (for Emily) for a salad lately. From John and Emily, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and we hope you extend grace to yourself. It’s a very eating-centric time of year and people tend to beat themselves up the most. We want to help keep you accountable to yourself and your health and we are so grateful you’ve joined us for this podcast! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! In This Episode: We couldn’t get on Facebook for the live show because Facebook and Instagram were down. Sorry! (I couldn’t even upload our video. That kept crashing, too! Sorry! — Emily) What are you thankful for? Also, Emily was not prepared for this question and went right to food. John is grateful for his therapist and has some big news! Big congratulations to John, his mental health has been cleared to get the bariatric surgery! Now it’s just a matter of hitting a goal weight. What is with our kids trying to kill us?! Emily ate more vegetables this week, even though it’s been too cold for salads. Dude Cooking vegetable soup recipe: three bags of frozen vegetables in a crock pot with chicken broth. Do you like playing with food in your teeth? We referred back to Harriet Morris, Emily’s eating coach and her games to avoid binge-eating. Are you an Aldi fan? They have a lot of gluten-free stuff! John is comparing the benefits of Intermittent Fasting vs. Keto. It’s awesome that food manufacturers add more information to the package to help us make easier decisions. But the more we find out about nutrition and food information, the more informed we can be about what we put in our bodies. The memes in our Facebook group are awesome! We love when you post them because they always make us laugh! John plans the next few weeks of weight loss. Have you heard of sous vide cooking? Emily’s husband loves doing it and he’s testing it out on the Thanksgiving turkey. Sorry we couldn’t do our Winning Wednesdays this week because we couldn’t get on Facebook! Just remember, one day of eating will not ruin all your weight-loss. Emily found herself in Two-terville (where the first number on the scale is a 2) but, phew! She goes back to One-derland. Reverb — great for singers, horrible for podcast editors. Did you know Emily can play guitar and juggle? We get into a bit of banter about The Beatles Thanks to our friend Dave Jackson for giving us a shout-out! “Comparison is the thief of joy.”  —Theodore Roosevelt Sorry I couldn’t get the video up in our group! Mindfulness and Learning to Sit with our Feelings (is hard!)
A big thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards. We didn’t win, but we are thrilled to have been nominated! John has been learning to sit with his feelings, at the urging of his therapist who he has been seeing to get ready for bariatric surgery. And we’re finding out that sitting with our feelings and trying not to go into the fight-or-flight response is much harder than just trying to fight them. But it’s necessary for true weight-loss and to keep from sabotaging ourselves. Emily is dealing with Shark Week (what we call the week of her period) on top of weeks of sickness in the house and her weight-loss has been temporarily put on hold. But we have faith that we can make it through and we know it won’t always be like this, even though when we’re in the throes of it all, it can seem overwhelming and never-ending. But luckily, we have some amazing #WinningWednesday posts this week! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can interact with us while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook and we record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! In This Episode: Thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards! And congratulations to Sex with Emily who won in the Health & Fitness category! Do you love or hate “The Office”? John hates it! John’s learning to sit with his feelings, and this is an important step in our weight-loss journey. Mindfulness sounds “easy,” but when it comes to validating your own feelings and realizing the stories we tell ourselves, it’s incredibly difficult to learn. Both John and Emily have ADHD and there is a side of ADHD that comes with anxiety and possibly spiraling. We are both without our usual vices, so we have to find a whole new way to cope with our feelings. It’s still new to us and we’re still getting used to it. Emily is so sick of the generation wars. Stop it! Sorry we didn’t quite stay on the topic of weight-loss this week. We know how to diet — but we are learning to deal with the emotions and that’s the hard part. Did you know John’s stage name? John Jamingo! How we’re getting out our thoughts: Emily keeps morning pages and has a release jars for scraps of paper of her worries, and John has started recording his thoughts into the microphone. Oh, and it’s Shark Week for Emily and she is in hibernation mode, plus being sick and tired of being sick and tired. In case you need to hear this: You won’t always feel like this. This is only temporary. This is not the rest of your life. Also, no one has it all figured out. Did you know that checking something off your to-do list releases dopamine? How “Emily” is that? Emily gives some of her tips for productivity and chasing that dopamine. Comparison is the thief of joy! We love memes in the Facebook group! Feel free to share ALL your victories over there! Emily’s Weekly Weigh-In summed up: I’m not even sorry! John helps us come back during our Weigh-In! Later, Weighters! From the graphic John talks about for Signs You Need a Break: Losing interest in things you’re usually passionate about and bring you joy. Short temper and east to provoke. Taking everything personally. Constantly overthinking. Emotionally Overwhelmed. Always Exhausted/Tired We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Weight loss, Self-Sabotage, and Wafflefulls
If you’re listening to this when it’s released, you only have a few more hours to VOTE FOR HATE TO WEIGHT FOR THE 2019 DISCOVER PODS AWARDS HERE! Voting ends Monday, November 18th, 2019. John’s back this week and we have a bit of catching up to do. John’s switching up his diet to gluten-free and working on focusing on just one meal at a time. Emily has discovered Wafflefulls and has had an inhuman number of them in the last few weeks. “It's one meal at a time. Make good choices and if you don't make good choices, you get a chance to the next meal. You get a chance to do it again.” — JOHNSPIRATION New to Hate to Weight? She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: John’s basically becoming a Podcast Dealer. Try it! All your friends are doing it! Johns a bit of a Grinch when it comes to Christmas. Did you know? Both John and Emily have dealt with some depression lately and we’re working through using food as our crutch and really examining why we choose food as a vice. Sometimes, it’s a way to make us feel as ugly and gross on the outside as we feel on the inside. Do you have a good chili recipe for John to try? You can email it to hatetoweight@gmail.com OR call it in on our voicemail and we’ll play it on the show: 760-946-6464 (760-WINNING). We love learning what our listeners are cooking and the healthy recipes they are enjoying  —maybe it’ll inspire us! Sorry for those two hours last week I had the unedited version up! Oops! John’s now going Gluten-Free and having the deal with Keto Flu again. By the way, Aldi has some awesome gluten-free foods! Also, I didn’t mention it on the show, but if you are Gluten-free and like to travel, check out our friend Elikqities podcast, Travel Gluten-Free. WAFFLEFULLS are amazing! Thank you Brickbox in Stratford, Conn., for my new addiction! Emily is craving more vegetables, despite her love of Wafflefulls. Luckily, there is a veggie option! Ever do really well at something and hit a goal, then totally self-sabotage? Why do we do this to ourselves? We also come up with our dream Wafflefulls: A breakfast one and a low-carb variety with mashed cauliflower. Brickbox, just let us know when you’d like to come on as a sponsor ;) Emily has temporarily solved her clothing dilemma of being tired of shopping for clothes and having to throw them out when she loses more weight: she’s buying the same $6 shirts and $10 legging 2-packs from Walmart until her weight settles. Zuckerberg closet, here I come! John, if you’re reading these show notes, stop scratching your legs! As much as Emily loves her Wafflefulls, it’s important to note that it’s just a phase and this won’t consume her life or cause her to throw her diet completely away. “I’m not even sorry!” OUR BIG NEWS: Thank you to everyone who nominated Hate to Weight for the Discover Pods Awards! Only a few more hours from when this episode drops that you can vote for us in the Health & Fitness category! (And while you’re there, would you mind throwing a vote to Emily’s other podcast, The Story Behind, which is in the History category? Thanks!) It’s an honor just to be nominated. - Emily That’s what losers say! We want to win! - John No #WinningWednesday this week, but we’ll have them next week! Later, Weighters! Getting Started with Intermittent Fasting with Emily: Solo Episode
VOTE FOR HATE TO WEIGHT FOR THE 2019 DISCOVER PODS AWARDS HERE! This week is a little different from our other episodes. John couldn’t make it this week so I did a solo episode talking about how I got started with Intermittent Fasting and lost about 70 pounds in 18 months. We joke sometimes, but dieting really is such a lifestyle change, but it doesn’t always have to be a punishment for doing something wrong. I really encourage anyone currently on a weight-loss journey of their own to keep getting back on the wagon, keep trying new things, keep pushing toward your goals. John and I are so encouraged by all of you and your support and we hope we’ve also been able to be supportive to you. — Emily New to Hate to Weight? Working with an Eating Coach and uncovering some compulsive and binge eating tendencies and learning how to manage them. Finding Intermittent Fasting in a book about ADHD, of all things. Why IF works so well for Emily. Some of the other diets and weight-loss gimmicks Emily has tried and had temporary success with. How a Clean Fast works. Tons of resources to help you get started or keep going if you’re doing Intermittent Fasting. A little overview of how Intermittent Fasting works. Some things to watch out for when starting IF (fatigue, wonky menstrual cycles — both were temporary for Emily) Falling off the wagon and getting back on over and over again. The mindset shifts Emily has dealt with throughout the past year and a half. “I can have it tomorrow.” “Everything is a practice.” “Trust the process.” If you’re struggling with getting healthy, please know that we have an amazing discussion group over on Facebook for listeners of the show.
