Long-Time Fan – Still Great Thanks to Chris, But Pete’s Commentary is Wearing Thin
I’ve been listening to the Abroad in Japan podcast since day one and have been a fan of Chris Broad’s YouTube channel pretty much since he started. His dry humour, sharp observations, and deep respect for Japan make him one of the best voices out there when it comes to Japanese culture and travel. The production quality is always top-notch, and his storytelling is consistently engaging.
When Pete Donaldson joined the podcast, he added some light-hearted banter and energy that worked well early on. But over time, his increasingly unhinged far-left takes and out-of-touch commentary have become more annoying than entertaining. It’s especially frustrating when he starts telling Japanese people how they should think or feel about their own culture and society—it comes off as a condescending white saviour complex, and it detracts from what makes the show unique.
That said, I’ll keep listening because I still love what Chris brings to the table. His insights, humour, and genuine curiosity about Japan continue to make the podcast worthwhile. I just wish the show would return a bit more to its roots: thoughtful, funny, and focused on Japan—without the ideological baggage.
