What a treat! On today’s episode, we have special guest Melissa Corkum, Parent Coach and mom of six by birth and adoption, join us on Anyalogic. She shares the simple secrets to guilt free parenting, where you can have less pressure and more confidence that you are getting this parenting thing right, even in your relationships with adult children, grandchildren or your nieces and nephews.

Melissa talks about the fragile nervous systems of some of our children and, in some circumstances, success is simply creating safety for all and staying connected with your child. I remember the time someone was asking me if her family should adopt and there were some situations that warranted her full attention at the time. I suggested that maybe now wasn’t the time. Safety for all.

Melissa shares about these three areas:

1.    The definition of success as a parent (i.e., basing it on something you actually have control over, and hear my response about how holidays are different now for me)

2.    Why messing up is an important part of parenting (hallelujah to that!)

3.    Brain science and parenting (why staying calm may NOT be the best response, and how I somehow knew this and labeled it in my world as “being bigger than Anya’s fear”)

Get a glimpse into what an overreactive nervous system looks like and learn about mirror neurons as well. I love her take on describing trauma, having something happen to you that you didn’t have the tools to navigate and felt very alone in.

Lastly, what do wine, chocolate and a pillow in your closet have to do with regulating your children’s crazy behavior? Listen on my friend to find out.
