I was looking for an audio drama like this. Blackout has a solid story with an amazing soundscape and it’s set in a realistic world. You can almost feel the cold isolation when you listen. If you’re looking for a thriller, you should give it a listen. Of course it does have some cons as well. The episodes are about 20 minutes long and sometimes I felt like the scenes were a bit rushed and didn’t have as much of an impact as they could. And sometimes the accents made me laugh when I shouldn’t have been. I don’t know if there will be a second season, but I felt satisfied with where this season ended. It ends well while leaving things open for more.
With Rami Malek as the lead, a focus on sound effect quality, an interesting story line, and dozens of rave reviews, I had to give Blackout a listen. At the end of Season 1, I was left with some pretty strong and conflicting feelings. On one hand: I LOVED the story and the suspense of this podcast. I was hooked and had binged my way through the entire season before I even realized it was over. The sound quality is incredible - there is an attention to detail that makes whispers seem like whispers and gunshots sound like gunshots. On the other hand: By the end of the season, I felt like vastly more effort went into the settings and the script than the characters. Some of the recurring characters felt very flat and static, and sacrifices fell short in my eyes because I felt nothing for the person making the sacrifice. No matter my nitpicking, this was still an excellent show, and I will definitely be listening to Season 2 soon.
One of the best audiodrama's I've ever heard. Rami Malek kicks ass as always. From episode one this podcast just sucks you in!
Excellent podcast with great voice acting (what else did you expect with Rami Malek lol), narrative and story (well, just for Season1, don't waste your time with the Season2).
This started out as an absolute thriller in season 1. When season 2 hit it turned into a nonsensical trail of wandering and speaking to dead people. This had a lot of promise but ended badly.
Really enjoyed the first season, it set up a great and intriguing premise, and the acting/production was great. Season 2 went way off the rails, it honestly seemed like an entirely different show. Rami isn't even in it for more than 5 minutes but they're still saying it stars him. Very disappointing.
Loved this podcast! Great story line! You'll feel like you are there with the characters!
Started strong with a great cast. Ended way too abruptly though.
I really liked this podcast! It was pretty spooky, given the current state of politics in America. This show presents a fictional situation that could actually come true this day in age with the alternate realities that get dreamt up by people in positions of power. Very enlightening. Just love Rami Malek as the lead! His voice is a beautiful representation of the real emotion he exudes while performing.
It's sponsored by Sonos so it's no surprise that the soundscape is the best part of this podcast. Great concept. It seems very rushed and becomes disconnected because of it. The back and forth between different families makes it a little difficult to follow. You have to pay attention to catch when it's a flashback or current.
Rami Malek is one of my favorite actors, so when I saw he stars in this I jumped right on it. All the performances are great. Everyone has a unique voice so it's clear which character is speaking even though there are a lot of different characters. There were some moments in a few episodes where I was really disappointed in the decisions some characters made, but I realized that bad decisions make good stories. Things have to go wrong so they can be fixed--it's what makes drama. And those moments were addressed later on, thankfully. I really like the premise of this. And the twist reveal in the last two episodes of the first season make the story even more interesting. The idea of "rebooting" society with a global blackout is a premise I can't wait to see play out.
This show feels like it's had parts truncated or cut out because some things happen way too fast, e.g. a teenage boy who flips against his friends and girlfriend on a dime, and then time skips. None of it feels organic.
Very stupidly written. The trial was the worst part. Very quickly you could tell that they were leaving things out just to try and make the rest of the plot work.
i want a season 3
One of the best fiction podcasts out there. Really well done and thrilling
I like Rami Malek, but this podcast was not great. It started out promising, but is filled with various tropes from films, and the end result was pretty dull.
Too much announcements Horrible this . Storyline lame. Episode trial this is worst thing I've ever heard the episode is terrible. The dumbest didn't tell that lecon did. Director or the writer is dumb or something worse. what a script. Really badly made it. Main character is boring, soft and dumb he hasn't Ball. Sorry I really tried to enjoy though it's lame . Excellent effects, good voices actors . But it's too tough to swallow the plot.
Great audio quality, actors were great!
My rating is based on the current season (2) - while the plot of season 1 was uneven, Rami Malik was a joy, and the sound production fabulous, both of which kept me listening. Season 2 changed everything. SPOILERS TO COME. The complete overhaul in the narrative to an entirely different cast of characters that we know nothing about was, for this listener, a very poor choice. Why should I care about these people when I'm tuning in for the characters of season 1? They became less than sidelined - they barely feature in the story (at least the first few episodes, which was as far as I could manage). By far the most ridiculous part of the writing was the way season 1's main character was offhandedly killed off - - our hero from season 1 is killed by a TREE? THAT is the best these writers could come up with?! It's such an embarrassingly bad piece of storytelling that I can only imagine the writers had a huge falling out with Rami Mallik and wanted to kill off his character in as pathetically and humiliating a way as possible. Meanwhile, the flaws in season 2's narrative escalate. The disorganised flip-flopping between timelines and characters we barely know makes it difficult to follow, and some of the sound effects - e.g the bubbly water-cooler gurgling of some guy in his death scene - are laugh-out-loud bad. 2 stars only because I enjoyed Rami so much in season 1.
Ok so, I loved this show, right up to the point during the trial when character decisions get really insane and didn't make much sence at all based on previous decisions. I will tune in to listen to more, but the next time something like that happens, I'm jumping ship.
