13. Where the fork have you been? - Transcript

Hi, I'm back McFarland from popular business and popular career. In this podcast, I'll be speaking to entrepreneurs who have overcome adversity, made difficult decisions, challenged the status quo and achieved amazing things in their businesses. Welcome to brave in business. Well, hello there. It's back. McFarland, your host of the brain in business podcast. And I'm just popping in for a super quick, super chatty episode today to address the elephant in the room and know the elephant in the room is not me. It is the question Where the fork have you been? So I started a podcast earlier this year, and then I kind of fell off the face of the earth. I stopped recording podcasts and I basically stopped Shah going up. So if you follow me on social media, you will potentially have noticed that it wasn't just the podcast that fell by the wayside and that I actually kind of went into hiding now, today I just wanted to pop in, and I guess, answer that question and just give you a little bit of insight into what has been going on in my life and why I started a podcast and then went and hid away in a cave. It's definitely not what you would call the norm, right, But that's OK. I am definitely not what you would call the norm. So what happened? I didn't even know where to start. Let's just roll with it. Earlier on this year, I had a big trip away. I went away from my bling angel certification. I went to Sydney to speak at the Women with Altitude Conference. So many things were going on. It was just a really busy time in the business. I had quite a few days away. There was just lots and lots and lots happening, and around that time, I ask, actually started a new medication. It was actually a medication for my a D H D, which I have spoken about in a previous episode. And what happened is that medication made me really, really sick. I'm not going to go into all the gory details because I don't feel like with that close friends. But let's just say that I was pretty crook and it was very uncomfortable, so that was kind of the start of this period where I went quiet and just kind of disappeared But after that, there were a whole bunch of other things that happened as well. You know, I wasn't feeling particularly physically. Well, to be honest with you, I wasn't really feeling particularly mentally well. And for a while there I found myself really struggling. Mentally, I don't generally suffer from depression, but I was really having quite a down period. And I didn't really realise how bad I've gotten until I Yeah, I was feeling pretty bad. So around this time, another thing that was also happening is that I was doing renovations here at my house. We were renovating our kitchen. We knocked down a wall between our kitchen and our laundry to expand out the size of the kitchen, and we, like, ripped up all of the flooring, the whole works. Now, when I say we did this, let me just assure you that I was not doing any physical labour. I did hire the professionals. Meets in my job was like two semi supervised. So I did have a project manager, but I kind of just needed to keep an eye on things, and that was all well and good until well until the renovation began. And then I realised that it wasn't actually an eye on things that I was going to be keeping. It was actually an ear on things because, yeah, renovating is really loud. So I've never renovated before. It's never been something that I've particularly been interested in, but with the housing market in Australia, like my husband and I talked about it and we didn't want to go and buy another house. So we decided to make some upgrades to the house we've got and, you know, put these plans in place. And what I've found out since is that renovation plans never go to plan. So it took a bit longer than what we'd expected. There were a few little disasters. There were a few things that, you know, I kind of got called out for being a little bit of a spoke Pratt for namely, when my beautiful Italian granite sink was opened and it was found to be broken. I kind of threw my toys out of the pram a little when it was suggested to me that maybe I could just go and pick another sink instead of waiting for a new sink to be shipped over from Italy. No, I do remember stomping my foot and saying, I will not compromise. I'm totally not a detail oriented person. But when it comes to some things like that sink, it was definitely definitely worth the wait. I guess the long story short is that around this time my life was just hectic and there were so many things happening, and I found it really, really hard to just show up, to show my face, to talk about my business and to be honest, to kind of really do anything in my business. I moved around a lot. I wore my red track suit a lot and not a lot really kind of got done. Now I'm pretty honest about the fact that I'm really not the Queen of Consistency. It is one of those things. It's part of being a neurodivergent, introverted entrepreneur. There's a lot of stuff that's going on for for me, and I need to work within my own working style and my energy and all of those kinds of things. So I basically just gave myself permission to just roll with it and do what I needed to do and just see what happens Basically So I did that and honestly I probably did it for a little bit too long. Kind of got into this little cruzi habit where don't get me wrong. I was still working but I wasn't really working on the right stuff. What I can tell you, though, is that over the last few months I have pulled my head out of my rear end and I have started to take control back and really start to work on the goals that I have for the business. It's been really exciting and it's been really invigorating and I am honestly just like having the time of my life. It's really, really cool at the moment. My team and I are in the middle of preparing for the launch of business in the back seat, which is my signature programme. I launched it for the first time last year and it went really well. But I decided this year that I wanted to completely remake the whole thing just like revamp. It had so much extra value to it and just make it like the best programme that you've ever seen in your life and it's just shaping up to be just magnificent. I am really, really pumped about it so pumped. I'm going to do a podcast episode just to tell you all about it. But in the meantime, I just wanted to let you know that I guess I am back. I feel like in a way, I'm kind of back from the dead. I actually bought myself a piece of jewellery in June at the end of June to celebrate the fact that I'm packed from the dead And yeah, to also celebrate the fact that I had the best month in June financially in my business and you know so long. It's amazing what happens when you actually show up and do your freaking job. Just going to leave that there for you, just in case that resonates anyway. That's it. I know this episode is being a little bit of a ramble, but I just wanted to check back in with you and say, Hey, I'm still here and the podcast is coming back, so it may not be a smooth transition back into regular programming, but I am really, really committed to making this podcast work. I have got the most amazing guests lining up around the block to come onto the podcast and talk to you. I've got some really, really fun solo episodes mapped out and just different little ideas and snippets that I want to share with you. And it is just another really cool thing that I'm excited about diving back into now that I am back from the dead back on Dick, however you want to describe it, that's all I'm going to say. I hope that you're having a fabulous week. I hope that you have had a fabulous few months since I last appeared. And yeah, really looking forward to joining you on future episodes.
