1:25

Hello everyone and welcome to British

1:28

Murders, the podcast focusing exclusively on

1:30

listener suggested British murder cases. I'm

1:32

your host, Joe Blues, and this

1:34

is the first episode of season

1:36

13. Can you

1:38

believe it? One, three. Is

1:40

it unlucky 13? We will see. Before

1:43

we get into the story, let's

1:45

break the ice. As always, the

1:47

show's first opening icebreaker segment is

1:49

this. True facts that sound

1:51

like bullsh**. Did you

1:53

know it's actually illegal to be drunk

1:56

2:22

Twain. This. Case

2:24

was requested via email by Andy

2:26

in Australia. Were. In the village

2:29

of Dogmas Field this week. Located in

2:31

the south east county of Hampshire. Is.

2:33

Located nine miles east of Bears

2:36

in stock, forty miles south of

2:38

Redding, and thirty seven miles southwest

2:40

of London. Here. Are

2:42

a couple of quick firefox about Dogmas

2:45

Field. Number. One Henry the eighth

2:47

elder brother Arthur Prince of Wales and

2:49

his bride Catherine of Aragon a said

2:51

to have stayed in the village at

2:54

one point. And. Of the to

2:56

the land where the money is located at

2:58

will come on to that soon was recorded

3:00

in the Doomsday Book of Ten Eighty Six

3:02

as Doc may have felled. I

3:05

struggle to find any more facts apart from

3:07

those two, but there are a fair few

3:09

tidbits spread throughout the episode. According

3:12

to the Twenty Eleven census, the estimated

3:14

population of Dogmas Field was two hundred

3:17

and seventy nine. So it really is

3:19

a tiny little village. I'm

3:22

gonna begin this story with the

3:24

best family history. I went

3:26

down one hell of a rabbit hole. Juri

3:28

my research which took me all the way

3:30

back to be late eighteenth century. The.

3:33

Big with a Family has had roots

3:35

in the Humps, a village of once

3:37

in Lawrence for almost half a millennium.

3:40

A compiled a simple family tree on

3:42

line so that I could get my

3:44

bearings and understand the relationship between Corinne

3:46

a big with Us who story and

3:48

talent in this episode and some of

3:51

our ancestors. Harrys big

3:53

with esquire was to read as

3:55

great great great granddaughter. He.

3:58

lived from seventeen eight he wants 1833

4:01

but he became famous in 1802

4:03

at the age of roughly 21

4:06

when he proposed to non other

4:08

than novelist Jane Austen on

4:10

December 2nd of that year.

4:13

Known worldwide for such works

4:15

as Sense and Sensibility and Pride

4:17

and Prejudice, Jane found herself accepting

4:19

Harris's proposal but shocked everyone the

4:21

following morning when she told her

4:24

husband to be that she'd changed

4:26

her mind. She then

4:28

swiftly left the grounds of Many Down Park

4:30

in the company of her brother and sister.

4:33

Many Down Park was the name of the

4:36

ancient manor which housed the Big Wither family

4:38

for hundreds of years before it was demolished

4:40

in 1965. Only the stables,

4:43

coach house and outbuildings remained to

4:46

this day. Also

4:48

of note in Karina's family tree is

4:50

her great great great uncle Charles Big

4:52

Wither, the youngest of Harris's sons who

4:55

was appointed as a member of the

4:57

New Zealand Legislative Council in 1863 but

4:59

resigned during that

5:02

same year without actually taking his

5:04

seat. I was

5:06

interested in finding out whether the family

5:08

has a deep military background but it

5:11

doesn't appear to. Karina's

5:13

granddad Guy Big Wither served as

5:15

a Lieutenant at HMS Dolphin also

5:17

known as Fort Blockhouse which was

5:19

the historic home of the Royal

5:21

Navy's submarine service until January 2020.

5:24

Her dad

5:26

Richard Big Wither joined the Royal

5:28

Navy as a Fleet Air Arm

5:30

pilot and he received the Distinguished

5:32

Service Cross. He got

5:34

that for his undaunted courage, skill

5:37

and determination in carrying out attacks

5:39

on the German battleship Tirpitz during

5:41

the Second World War offensive known

5:44

as Operation Goodwood. Karina

5:47

was born in roughly 1957 to

5:49

Richard and his wife Priscilla, maiden

5:51

name Maus Smith and I'm assuming

5:53

they at first lived in Wootton

5:55

St Lawrence. One source

5:57

claimed Karina was born in Berkshire though

6:00

so I can't say for sure where she spent

6:02

her formative years. Sibling

6:04

wise Karina had a couple of

6:06

older half sisters Alexandra or Sandra being

6:09

the eldest and Joanna being the

6:11

middle child. Joanna, known

6:13

professionally as Joanna Moore-Smith would move

6:15

to Australia and star as Laura

6:17

Denham slash Phillips in the Australian

6:20

sub opera The Young Doctors between

6:22

1976 and 1980. Throwing

6:26

up the three siblings were close and

6:28

everyone in the local community knew and

6:31

liked them. When Karina was about

6:33

9 the family moved to

6:35

a property called Well Waters in the

6:37

village of Dogmasfield. Located

6:40

off Chatter Alley, 12 miles east

6:42

of the Big Wither Family's home

6:44

village, the luxury 17th century cottage,

6:46

complete with its own tennis court,

6:48

provided a wonderful setting for the

6:51

siblings to enjoy what remained of

6:53

their childhoods. Karina

6:55

has been described as being the sort of

6:57

child every parent wants. She was

7:00

happy, rarely got into bother and gratefully

7:02

returned the love she was shown by

7:04

her parents. She

7:06

attended a private school in Hertfordshire called

7:08

St Christopher and based on the fact

7:11

it was located 70 miles northeast of

7:13

the family's cottage I assume she bordered

7:15

there. The annual fees were

7:17

reportedly in excess of £4000 a

7:20

year which equates to almost 12.5 grand

7:23

today. Karina

7:25

education seriously but ultimately not knowing what

7:27

she wanted to do with her life

7:30

career wise, she found it difficult to

7:32

remain at one place of employment for

7:34

an extended period. She

7:36

tried her hand at being a waitress, did

7:38

the door to door rounds for Avon as

7:40

so many women did in the 70s but

7:43

couldn't put her finger on what her passion

7:45

was. Her restlessness

7:47

perhaps came from wanting to help

7:49

others rather than focusing on herself.

7:52

As she grew older Karina's good

7:54

willed nature and kind-heartedness would become

7:56

more and more prevalent. offer

8:00

help and support to those in

8:02

far less fortunate situations than her,

8:04

she regularly saw herself in the

8:06

company of such people. One

8:09

of her friends would later look back

8:11

on Karina's altruistic tendencies by saying, She

8:14

was always sorry for misfits and

8:16

showed them remarkable sympathy. She

8:19

attracted insecure people. They

8:21

came to her like a magnet. Where

8:24

exactly such selflessness stems from

8:26

is unclear. As an

8:28

adult, Karina lived in an annex off

8:30

the side of her parents' cottage which

8:33

was essentially a self-contained flat. One

8:36

of Karina's friends was a woman called

8:38

Belinda who lived just under 6 miles

8:40

east of her on Southampton Street in

8:42

the nearby town of Farnborough. Belinda

8:45

extended an invitation to Karina in the late

8:47

summer of 1983 because

8:49

she was hosting a barbecue at her house.

8:53

Accepting, Karina had no idea how significant the

8:55

seemingly mundane event would go on to become

8:57

because it was there where she met the

8:59

person who would go on to take her

9:02

life at the age of 26. Ian

9:06

Haywood was born and raised in the Hampshire

9:08

town of Aldershaw in about 1964. His parents

9:13

had three children in total, all boys,

9:15

of which Haywood was the eldest. I'm

9:18

unsure of his dad's name but his

9:20

mum Jacqueline worked as a radio operator

9:22

for a taxi company and was left

9:24

to raise the three boys on her

9:26

own after separating from her husband when

9:28

Haywood was just 5 years old. The

9:31

four of them continued their lives living in

9:34

a council house in the town and

9:36

given Haywood essentially grew up without a

9:38

father, he developed a huge chip on

9:40

his shoulder. I can't

9:42

speak with certainty as to how involved

9:44

his dad was in his life but

9:46

based on the information available it seems

9:48

as though he wasn't present or certainly

9:50

wasn't a regular feature in his son's

9:52

lives. Haywood

9:54

Grew up to be incredibly insecure

9:57

and as a teenager his rebellious

9:59

nature developed. What from simple

10:01

disobedience to criminal activities?

10:04

He. Would frequently steal cars in his

10:06

neighborhood and partook in Joy Ride

10:08

In despite been fifteen too young

10:10

to actually acquire a driving licence.

10:13

He spent a good period of

10:15

is lit teenage years in detention

10:17

centers in Boston for his petty

10:20

crimes. When Sebi arena in a

10:22

to his crimes escalated further. The.

10:24

First and seemingly own a criminal offense

10:26

Heywood received as an adult. Prior to

10:29

the stars events came on the back

10:31

of him assault and someone. Details.

10:34

Around what happened and to what degree

10:36

and not readily available but to me

10:38

is clear he had a pawnshop of

10:40

violence and would quickly become aggressive if

10:42

things didn't go His were. Working.

10:45

Backwards here would on his girlfriend

10:47

Paya. We're excited at the prospect

10:49

of becoming parents when she fell

10:51

pregnant and roughly June Nineteen Eighty

10:53

one. Heywood. Was in

10:55

a borstal at the time but the pair always

10:58

so it so that when he was drunk and

11:00

dear released Hence she soon became pregnant. Paya

11:03

was the same age as Haywood and if

11:05

we fast forward nine months to March nine

11:07

a to say welcome their baby to the

11:10

world. Bizarrely, Not

11:12

long after the birth of their child the

11:14

past split up and see can believe it's

11:16

both went on to quickly married or the

11:19

people. Hire seems to

11:21

have followed a similar path to hear would

11:23

your in her let teenage years and owing

11:25

to a complete like a guidance she also

11:27

got in trouble with the law although to

11:29

wipe stand again is not known. You

11:32

can probably tell this is one of

11:34

them stories with plenty of unanswered questions

11:36

to to a complete lack of resources.

11:39

Still, Corinne A story is one that

11:41

deserves to be told. So let's push on.

11:44

Both. Player and Say Woods respected marriages

11:46

appear to have been done on impulse

11:49

because both of them broke down rather

11:51

quickly. Hey. Woods lusted

11:53

just three weeks, and before long,

11:55

the two teenage parents rekindled their

11:58

relationship. They. Ended. living

12:00

in room 1 of the

12:02

Fleet Hotel, accommodation supposedly supplied

12:04

by Fleet Town Council. At

12:07

Belinda's Summer BBQ, Corinna was introduced

12:10

to Harewood, a mutual friend, and

12:12

for most of the afternoon, the

12:14

pair sat together talking about their

12:16

respective lives. Harewood

12:19

had had a completely opposite upbringing when

12:21

compared to Corinna, and based on what

12:23

we know about her personality, it makes

12:25

sense as to why she listened intently

12:27

to what Harewood had to say. When

12:30

evening arrived and the event finished, the pair

12:32

said a fond farewell, having planned to meet

12:34

up soon over lunch to get to know

12:37

each other more, and continue their new found

12:39

friendship. I must stress that

12:41

as far as Corinna was concerned, Harewood was

12:43

not someone she wanted to be in a

12:46

relationship with him. She wasn't

12:48

attracted to him, didn't get butterflies when he

12:50

spoke with her, she simply wanted

12:52

to offer her friendship to someone in need

12:54

as she so often did. Within

12:57

a few weeks, the pair had met up

12:59

for the planned lunch after Corinna passed a

13:01

message to Belinda, who in turn passed it

13:03

on to Harewood. After

13:05

the meal, the two of them walked along

13:08

a stretch of water, likely either the river

13:10

heart or the canal that runs close to

13:12

it, and continued to chat away. It's

13:15

safe to say the pair got on

13:17

well, but Corinna was a bit put

13:19

off by Harewood's supposed immaturity. He

13:21

was 19 remember, and although he

13:23

was technically an adult, based on

13:25

his background that makes sense regarding

13:27

his personality. He was 7

13:30

years Corinna's junior, so his lack of

13:32

maturity likely stood out even more so

13:34

than usual to someone of her age.

13:37

It may have been that same evening when

13:40

Corinna invited Harewood over to her house, but

13:42

if not, the date was September 12th 1983.

13:46

Richard and Priscilla were out of the country,

13:49

and even though Corinna had her own place

13:51

to live separate from the main house, she

13:53

and Harewood would be the only two people

13:55

there. After his

13:57

career in the navy finished, Richard became

13:59

a leather trader running his own business.

14:02

The trip to Paris was business

14:04

related, as his company had secured

14:07

a stand to showcase their goods

14:09

and services at the renowned Saint-Mort

14:11

Internationale du Cour, which

14:13

translated from my very good French

14:15

means International Leather Week. It's

14:18

an annual event run by the National

14:20

Leather Council of France and Priscilla naturally

14:22

supported her husband by going with him.

14:25

When it came time for bed at the

14:27

cottage that evening, Hayward was made up an

14:29

area of the living room floor whilst Corina

14:31

retired to her bed. Nothing

14:34

eventful happened throughout the night but the

14:36

following morning that would all change. Waking

14:39

up earlier than his host, Hayward

14:41

saw an opportunity. The

14:44

cottage was decorated with plenty of luxury

14:46

items that he could easily steal and

14:48

sell on for a quick bit of

14:50

cash. The only problem was

14:52

that Corina woke up earlier than expected

14:54

and caught Hayward in the act. Not

14:57

quite believing what she was seeing given how

14:59

generous she'd been by offering the troubled Hayward

15:02

a place to stay for the night, Corina

15:04

was unable to react in any other

15:06

way than by lambasting her guest. Let's

15:09

be fair, I think we'd all have reacted

15:11

exactly how Corina did in that situation. As

15:14

she shouted at Hayward and ordered him

15:17

to return the items he'd already taken

15:19

before getting out, the 19 year old

15:21

suddenly flipped and lunged towards Corina grabbing

15:23

her by the throat with both hands.

15:26

Seeing red, he attempted to strangle

15:28

his host there and then but

15:30

somehow Corina slipped free of his

15:32

grasp and ran quickly outside into

15:34

the garden. Tatching up

15:36

with her in no time, the much

15:38

faster and stronger Hayward grabbed Corina's arm,

15:41

restraining her and thwarting her escape. Spotting

15:44

a lawnmower close by, it was that piece

15:46

of equipment he was interested in. Laying

15:49

next to the mower was a machete,

15:51

something commonly used to clear shrubs and

15:53

brambles in gardens. Using

15:56

the blunt side of the weapon, Hayward struck

15:58

Corina in the neck facing the garden. and

16:00

body repeatedly knocking her to the ground in

16:02

the process. Floating in

16:05

and out of consciousness and unable to

16:07

move, Carina was then attacked with the

16:09

sharp side of the machete. Heywood would

16:12

later imply that it was doing Carina a favour

16:15

after the beating he had just given her. His

16:17

belief was that by killing her he was

16:20

putting her out of her misery. The

16:23

story will continue after these quick messages.

16:27

Last year our neighbours had a break-in while

16:29

they were home. It took the police 16

16:31

minutes to respond to the 911 calls.

16:33

The average response time in major cities

16:36

for priority 911 calls is

16:38

over 10 minutes. Imagine what could

16:40

have happened in that 16 minutes. I

16:42

want fast access to my firearm, no matter

16:44

where I'm at in my house. That's

16:47

why I trust Secure at

16:49

Gun Storage. Secure discrete customisable

16:52

16:54

secureatgunstorage.com And

16:56

now back to the story. Hiding

16:59

her body in a nearby bush

17:01

on the grounds, Heywood returned to

17:03

loading his car with items from

17:05

the cottage including a sword, some

17:07

of Richard's medals, three tellies, a

17:09

fur coat and several electrical goods.

17:12

Having driven there the night before, Heywood

17:14

appears to have loaded both his car

17:16

and Carina's blue mini metro, because it

17:19

was the latter that he drove back

17:21

to the hotel where he and Pia

17:23

were staying. Pia had

17:25

no idea where he'd been for the last

17:27

two days, because he just disappeared, as he

17:29

so often did. But nevertheless,

17:31

she, along with her friend Lisa,

17:33

helped Heywood unload Carina's car and

17:35

drop the items off in their

17:37

room. By all accounts

17:39

Pia were more concerned about where Heywood had

17:42

been than the contents of the car. Lisa

17:45

was then asked to accompany Heywood back to

17:47

the cottage so they could retrieve his car.

17:50

She then drove his car back to

17:52

the hotel whilst he continued to drive

17:54

Carina's. Neither woman had

17:56

any idea what he'd done by the way, they'd

17:58

just appear to have been following orders.

18:02

On the same day their daughter was

18:04

killed Richard and Priscilla returned home from

18:06

their trip. Arriving in the

18:08

evening they noticed that Corinna was not around

18:10

which they at first thought odd given she'll

18:13

are known when they were due home but

18:15

at the same time she frequently stayed away

18:17

from the house with friends so perhaps they

18:20

figured that's where she was. What

18:22

Corinna's parents did notice was the missing

18:24

items that Hayward had stolen from them.

18:28

In forming the police Richard and Priscilla

18:30

were visited by local officers who explained

18:32

they would do their utmost to catch

18:34

whoever was responsible and return their treasured

18:37

possessions. The officers

18:39

didn't stay long given the time of

18:41

day but explained they would return the

18:43

following morning to continue their investigation. As

18:46

they searched the grounds of the cottage

18:49

Richard joined them and it was he

18:51

who stumbled across the discovery of Corinna's

18:53

badly mutilated body at around midday. I

18:56

can't begin to imagine how utterly horrifying

18:58

that must have been for him. She

19:01

had as many as 16 devastating injuries

19:04

to her head alone with the rest

19:06

of her body being both badly bruised

19:08

and covered in cuts from the machete.

19:11

The seemingly simple burglary case had

19:14

just escalated into a murder inquiry.

19:17

Within a few hours Hayward was arrested

19:19

after being spotted driving around the village

19:22

in Corinna's stolen car. When

19:24

told what he was being charged with

19:26

Hayward initially denied any knowledge of what

19:28

had happened although before long he is

19:30

said to have confessed to having killed

19:32

Corinna. Pyre was also

19:35

arrested and taken in for questioning as

19:37

the police believed she had assisted Hayward

19:39

by retaining the stolen goods for his

19:41

benefit. All the stolen

19:43

goods were subsequently found in the hotel room

19:45

where Hayward and Pyre were staying and were

19:48

returned to their rightful owners. Pyre

19:50

explained that Hayward came and went as

19:53

he pleased and although she admitted to

19:55

having handled stolen goods she technically didn't

19:57

know they were stolen at the time.

19:59

and she certainly wasn't aware that her

20:01

partner had murdered someone. With

20:04

no prior convictions, Pyre would later be placed

20:06

on probation for 12 months in December 1983

20:08

and was fined £20 in costs, roughly £65

20:10

in today's money. Three

20:17

months before her sentencing, Carina was laid

20:19

to rest in the cemetery at Wootton

20:21

St Lawrence's Parish Church, where many other

20:23

members of her family also lay. As

20:27

for Harewood, his murder trial commenced in

20:29

May 1984. I'll

20:31

say trial, it was more of a

20:33

hearing, because Harewood had already pleaded guilty

20:35

to murder and did so at Winchester

20:38

Crown Court. Last

20:40

in just 20 minutes, the hearing ended with

20:42

the judge handing Harewood a life sentence. His

20:45

mum, Jacqueline, was quoted in the papers at

20:47

the time saying, I think

20:49

I know how the big wither family feel. I

20:52

know how I would feel if it was my daughter. But

20:55

Ian is my son, so I have a loyalty

20:57

to him. He is a

20:59

completely different person. That

21:02

last part is Jacqueline referring to how

21:04

Harewood came across during her weekly visits

21:06

whilst he was on remand. Our

21:09

story doesn't end there however. Harewood,

21:12

who was a notorious womanizer by the way,

21:14

went on to meet a woman called Ann

21:17

while he was serving his prison sentence. Meeting

21:20

Harewood in 1992, Ann was a voluntary

21:22

prison counsellor and soon fell in love

21:24

with the convicted murderer. She

21:27

knew he'd murdered someone, but for context,

21:29

Harewood had told Ann that he'd murdered

21:32

his stepfather on account of him being

21:34

abusive. Ann seems to

21:36

have had no idea that her new love

21:38

interest had killed an innocent woman who

21:40

despite basically being a stranger, had taken him

21:43

in out of the goodness of her heart.

21:46

Just two years into their relationship, Ann

21:48

and Harewood got married. After

21:51

long, he was granted a series of

21:53

their release passes before finally being released

21:55

from prison in December 1998. have

22:00

a total of 4 children together but

22:02

even that wouldn't stop Harewood from reoffending.

22:06

By then living in a house in

22:08

the West Sussex village of Hurst Pier

22:10

Point, Harewood had secured a role as

22:12

a lorry driver but when he lost

22:14

a job the family began to really

22:16

struggle financially. That set

22:18

off in Harewood a downward spiral that

22:20

saw him revert to womanising before committing

22:22

an act so heinous in 2001 that

22:24

it would see him recalled to prison

22:26

for good. On

22:29

January 18th of that year the now

22:31

36 year old headed for Ditchling Common

22:33

County Park, a picturesque woodland beauty spot

22:36

close to an area known as the

22:38

South Downs. It was

22:40

a common place for courting couples

22:42

to spend time together and that evening

22:45

Harewood spotted a couple of teenagers 17

22:47

and 19 years old respectively sat in

22:49

a car in the parking area. I'll

22:53

not be naming either of the two

22:55

teens simply because their names have been

22:57

omitted from all reports for legal reasons

22:59

but the 17 year old girl was

23:01

a college student, the 19 year

23:03

old was her boyfriend. Wearing

23:05

a balaclava and holding both a gun

23:07

and a sharp knife, Harewood emerged from

23:10

his hiding place and took the couple

23:12

by surprise. Demanding money

23:14

whilst pointing the gun at them, Harewood felt

23:16

they were reacting too slowly which led to

23:18

him firing the gun in the air as

23:20

a warning for them to hurry up. Wanting

23:23

to remove the boyfriend from the situation, Harewood

23:25

struck him on the head with the butt

23:28

of the gun before placing him inside the

23:30

boot of the car and then locking it

23:32

so he couldn't escape or help his girlfriend.

23:35

The terrified 17 year old insisted

23:37

that she had no money which led

23:39

to Harewood ordering her to strip at

23:41

gunpoint. What followed next

23:43

was an assault on the girl that she

23:45

took as being an attempt to rape her

23:48

which naturally caused her to resist and fight

23:50

back. Doing so, angered Harewood

23:52

to such an extent that he began

23:54

violently assaulting her with the knife, stabbing

23:56

her a reported 35 times in total.

24:01

The girl said of the attack, I

24:03

curled up into a ball, he leant

24:06

forward and I felt the first stab, he

24:08

did it another two times and then I went

24:10

numb, he just kept going and

24:13

going. To this day

24:15

she has scars on her hands and

24:17

face, a persistent physical reminder of that

24:19

horrendous evening. The

24:22

thing that saved her life was when she

24:24

kicked her wood so hard in the balls

24:26

he fell over backwards. The knife

24:28

he used on the girl snapped away from

24:30

the handle as he fell leaving him without

24:32

his preferred weapon of choice. Playing

24:35

dead the girl thankfully escaped with

24:37

her life as Hayward decided not

24:39

to continue his assault and stumbled

24:41

away clutching his privates. The

24:44

19 year old had managed to free himself from

24:46

the boot by escaping out the back of the

24:48

car, he had managed to put the back seats

24:50

down and climb out. The

24:52

couple were then taken to Princess Royal Hospital

24:54

in West Sussex by some of their friends

24:56

who arrived at the car park not long

24:59

after the attack. The

25:01

girls injuries were so severe she would later

25:03

require 143 snitches with the doctors who worked

25:05

on her

25:08

saying the injuries were some of the worst they had

25:10

ever seen. Hayward

25:12

had miraculously not nicked any major blood

25:14

vessels in the girls neck with the

25:16

blows to her chest being protected by

25:18

her ribs. Weeks of

25:21

physical therapy followed for the 17 year old owing

25:24

to her having a couple of surgeries to repair

25:26

the tendons in her hands. Luckily

25:29

a plastic surgeon was present when she

25:31

arrived at the hospital, I say

25:33

it's luck 8 because it wasn't meant to be there

25:35

that night, he'd swapped a shift

25:37

at the last minute which essentially led to

25:39

the girls hands being saved. Detective

25:42

Sergeant Chris Standard was one of 10

25:45

detectives with catching Hayward

25:47

although they didn't know it was him initially. Dubbed

25:50

Operation Angler, DS Standard said of

25:52

the brief hunt, it

25:54

was an irrational and very very

25:56

frightening attack with no real motive.

25:59

This young couple complete strangers to him.

26:01

It was such a motiveless and horrific assault

26:04

that we did not know what he was

26:06

capable of doing. Within

26:08

a day of the attack, Haywood was in

26:10

custody. After arriving home, he confessed

26:12

what he had done to Ann, who duly

26:15

informed the police the following morning. Haywood

26:18

then voluntarily walked into Brighton police

26:20

station after spotting a TV news

26:22

bulletin which named him as being

26:24

wanted by police in connection with

26:26

the attack. When his

26:28

trial commenced in January 2002, the

26:30

jury were not informed of his

26:32

previous murder conviction so as not

26:34

to prejudice them. Even

26:37

so, they unanimously found him

26:39

guilty of attempted murder, attempted

26:41

rape, false imprisonment and two

26:43

offences of attempted robbery. Haywood

26:46

did his utmost to try and blame Ann

26:49

for trying to frame him, that's his words,

26:51

owing to her having mental health problems. Ann

26:54

admitted to the jury that she had previously

26:56

suffered from a multiple personality disorder but that

26:58

was back in 1996. Handing

27:02

Haywood five separate life sentences to

27:04

be served concurrently, Judge Graham Ball

27:06

recommended in his closing statement that

27:08

he never be released, such was

27:10

the danger he posed to the

27:12

public. The judge went on to say,

27:15

You have been convicted on overwhelming

27:18

evidence of appalling crimes. You

27:20

subjected that young couple to a

27:22

truly horrendous ordeal. The facts

27:24

of these offences must rank among the

27:27

gravest short of murder itself. The

27:30

17-year-old's dad said after Haywood's

27:32

sentencing, All the family

27:34

are relieved and delighted that justice has

27:36

been done. This attack should never

27:39

have happened. The system had allowed

27:41

this murderer back into society to

27:43

re-offend. These events are

27:45

happening too often. The government

27:48

needs to sit up and urgently review the

27:50

handling of these callous and vicious people. As

27:53

for the 17-year-old, she said, The

27:56

most support I got was from my brother, my

27:58

mum and my dad. were with

28:00

me all the time. They had to cut

28:02

my food and help me go to the toilet. I

28:05

couldn't make my own drink or hold the kettle. I

28:07

couldn't hold my knife and fork properly and I

28:10

used to get so angry. To

28:12

this day she suffers from panic

28:14

attacks and is receiving regular counselling.

28:20

And that was the story of the murder

28:22

of Karina Bigwither. Thanks again and

28:24

if I'm requesting it I'd love to hear everyone's

28:26

thoughts. This week's new reviews

28:28

are as follows. Naomi Jones

28:30

recommended British Murders on Facebook

28:32

by saying, Brilliant podcast, interesting,

28:35

well researched cases. I love

28:37

Stuart's voice and delivery. Fab

28:39

show all round. Dana

28:41

Kay Mills left a 5 star review

28:43

on britishmurders.com. It reads, Howdy

28:46

from the US. I found your podcast

28:48

as I have just recently become an

28:50

elementary fan. A series here based

28:52

on Sherlock Holmes starring Johnny Lee

28:54

Miller. I have grown a

28:57

fondness for him and therefore searched for

28:59

a true crime podcast hosted by someone

29:01

with the same accent. There

29:03

are a couple but none of them were

29:05

attractive. Sorry to whomever they are. So

29:08

finally I found a podcast with a

29:10

lovely voice and a lovely face to

29:12

picture while I listen. I do watch

29:15

you on YouTube occasionally but generally I

29:17

listen while entering data for an entertainment

29:19

company here on the left coast of

29:21

America. 5 stars for

29:23

the broadcast slash podcast and

29:26

Cheerio. God I'm

29:29

going to get some stick for that accent.

29:31

But here's another one. Finally Kimberle in Texas

29:33

left a 5 star review on britishmurders.com which

29:36

reads, For the past 6 or

29:38

so years I've been listening to true crime

29:40

podcasts from around the world and I'm not

29:42

sure how I missed this one. Luckily

29:45

I came across it a couple

29:47

of months ago and soon found

29:49

myself binging the old episodes and

29:51

seasons. The research is thorough, delivery

29:53

is succinct, smooth and informative and

29:55

stew shows true compassion for the

29:57

victims in a kind and respectful manner.

30:00

I do love the pause cheerio at the

30:02

end of each episode more than I should

30:04

admit. I can't wait for new episodes to

30:07

drop. Please keep up the

30:09

good work you're doing highlighting lesser known

30:11

but equally important stories. Cheers from across

30:14

the pond. P.S. Go

30:16

Blues. Thank you

30:18

Naomi, Dana and Kimberley for leaving those

30:21

reviews. I can only apologize for my

30:23

horrific American accent there. If

30:25

anyone listening wants to leave a review of

30:27

the show and have it read on a

30:29

future episode, you can do so on iTunes,

30:31

Facebook, Podchaser or at British murders.com. You

30:34

can also leave star ratings on Spotify. Please

30:39

up for either my OBE or

30:41

CBET. You'll gain early

30:44

and ad-free access to all future episodes

30:46

as well as several bonus episodes, regular

30:49

giveaways, welcome goodies and my British

30:51

murders weekly journal series. If

30:54

you'd prefer to support the show on

30:56

a one-off basis, you can do so

30:58

by heading to buy me a coffee.com/British

31:00

murders. Please continue emailing

31:02

case suggestions to contact at British murders.com

31:04

or message me via social media. You'll

31:06

not only get the episode covered, but

31:09

you'll get a cheeky shout out for

31:11

your trouble. And that's

31:13

it for another episode. I've been Stu

31:15

at Blues. This has been British murders.

31:17

Thanks so much for listening. Until

31:20

next time. Cheerio.

31:26

Bye.
