Good morning theater fans! I'm Caryn Robbins with The Broadway Scoop for Monday, February 3.
Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee will film David Byrne's AMERICAN UTOPIA for future release. The critically acclaimed theatrical concert event is currently running at Broadway's Hudson Theatre through February 16. AMERICAN UTOPIA features the Scottish-American musician alongside an eclectic group of international musicians, performing songs from his solo career and from his time as frontman for Talking Heads.
The Broadway community will honor Tony Award winning composer and lyricist Jerry Herman tonight at a special memorial event at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The evening will include performances by Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Kelli O'Hara, Bernadette Peters and Jeremy Jordan, as well as a special video tribute from five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury. Herman passed away last December at the age of 88.
And Paper Mill Playhouse will premiere a reimagined version of Elton John and Tim Rice's hit musical AIDA. Directed by original Broadway cast member Schele Williams, the production will begin performances at the New Jersey venue on February 4, 2021, and will be followed by the launch of a national tour. AIDA opened at Broadway's Palace Theatre in March of 2000 and went on to play over 1800 performances, earning four Tony Awards including Best Original Score.
