Good morning theater fans! I'm Caryn Robbins with The Broadway Scoop for Tuesday, February 11th.
Broadway grosses are in for the week ending February 9 and the hit musical MOULIN ROUGE! continues its strong showing at the box office. The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 musical film made over 92 percent of its gross potential, earning over $1.6 million. Other top grossing shows for the week included THE LION KING, TINA: THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL, WEST SIDE STORY and box office champion, HAMILTON.
Laura Leigh Turner will make her Broadway debut in the role of Karen Smith in the hit musical MEAN GIRLS, beginning March 10. The actress will succeed the role's originator, Kate Rockwell, who will take her final bow at the August Wilson Theatre on March 8th. As previously reported, March 10 will also mark the first performance of Olivia Kaufmann in the role of Janis Sarkisian and Chad Burris, who will step into the role of Damian Hubbard.
And additional starry casting has been announced for the upcoming reimagined Cinderella movie musical, scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 5, 2021. Joining previously announced Grammy nominee Camila Cabello in the title role and Tony winners Idina Menzel and Billy Porter as the evil stepmother and the fairy godmother, respectively, will be Tony winner James Corden and Broadway alum John Mulaney as the mice and footmen, Oscar nominee Minnie Driver as Queen Beatrice and Grammy winner Missy Elliott as the Town Crier.
And that's The Broadway Scoop for Tuesday, February 11th.
