Whatever DID happen to Baby Jane? Today we will be exploring the celebrated (and sometimes derided) horror trope and subgenre: the psycho biddy.  This extremely specific subgenre of horror nearly took over the 1960s, and has managed to be fairly unreproducible since.  What exactly is psycho biddy horror, or maybe hag horror, or maybe hagsploitation, or if you’re feeling fancy, Grand Dame Guignol? How did this particular genre come to exist, and what does it tell us about the evolution of attitudes toward gender in Hollywood? Who were the "grande dames" of psycho biddy horror, and why do we love them so, so much? I will offer answers to all these questions, acquaint you with a few real-life geriatric murderers, and run through the main films that make up Grande Dame Guinol cinema. I also close you out with a bedtime story about a very unsettling landlady.
