During Cyber Security Connect in Monaco, Enterprise Times talked with Air Commodore Nick Lloyd. Lloyd is the Chief Information Officer at Permanent Joint Headquarters for the Ministry of Defence.

There is often a disconnect between the speed with which defence forces adopt technology and the wider world. This is very much evident in both communications and cyber security. Lloyd recognises this saying that information technology is driven by the consumer market. The challenge that gives him and the Ministry of Defence is how to adopt that technology securely.

We have seen technology cause a number of embarrassing issues for armed forces over the last year. Strava disclosing the layout of some military bases for example. Lloyd gives a more interesting example in the podcast about where and when devices are turned off. All of this plays into the need to better educate service personnel on how to use their devices.

Education is essential for the latest generations of armed forces. Lloyd pointed out that WiFi was now seen as just as important as food, shelter and water.
