The primary association with negotiation is in the business environment. Discussing mergers of big and small companies, buying goods and services, and even the hiring process is an element of negotiation, handling disputes and difficult situation, vendor price and sale elements and understanding the fulfilment of contracts obligations. Effective business negotiation should be the core of every management and leadership skills. Negotiation in business happens all the working time and on some occasions even outside of that time. It is often called a lack of time management. To understand what negotiation skills are necessary for business it is important to segregate the negotiation into buckets. There is the negotiation with other businesses, internal negotiation and career negotiation. 

 

The first on the list is the other business counterpart negotiation. This part of business negotiation is probably the one that business owners care the most, this is where the best deal is negotiated, relationships tried and nurtured, the long term agreement signed. Negotiating with other business is one of the most rewarding types of negotiation from the whole mix. Strategies, tactics and interactions can be draining, frustrating and time-consuming, although done right create the best possible solutions and learning that anyone can experience in a single project. In negotiation with the other side, it is important to understand requirements from stakeholders, understand the counterpart business position, current economic climate, as well as the capability of using soft skills like empathy, reading body language and ability to lead a difficult conversation without getting too emotional. This is one of the most resources heavy negotiation situation to be involved in, nevertheless, it is the more rewarding in terms of experience gained.
