Breath Break! Breath of Fire
Today we are going to be exploring a breathing technique called breath of fire or kapalabhati.
The mechanics of the breathing technique creates energy and a sense of heat if you like, a sense of fire and motion in the body.
It cleanses and it clears which is very
symbolic to the element of fire.
I sometimes like to deconstruct techniques by bringing in
some other aspects to it, self inquiry and/or the practice of observing your sensations, which is called
felt sense. Also to have moments of slowing down so you can really check in and feel what's going on for you and how this breathing
technique makes you feel.
I would like to acknowledge
the roots of what is a very traditional Pranayama practice.
A practice that has travelled through time, hundreds of years maybe much more, it has not only crossed countries but crossed
cultures and i feel it’s important to honour the roots of where this practice derived from.
In India the Sanskrit name for this practice is Kapalabhati which translates,
kapal, meaning "skull" and bhati, meaning “to shine.”
How does your skull shine or illuminate when doing this?
Lets begin!
