Hollow is a sci-fi horror audio drama from Violet Hour Media — starring Doug Bradley (Pinhead, Hellraiser franchise) as Kurtz and Shiva Negar (American Assassin, Seal Team) as Amelia — a futuristic retelling of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness set across the colonies and outer worlds of a corporate-controlled galaxy.

Major Amelia Wallenrod is a battle-hardened mercenary hired to track down a rogue leader named Kurtz. What begins as a corporate mission becomes a descent into the darkness of space, colonialism, and the human soul.

Heart of Darkness in space is the tag line going in. Offering a fresh take on a familiar tale, we follow Amelia Wallenrod, a hardened space mercenary, on her dangerous mission through the outer space colonies in search of the infamous Colonel Kurtz. It is a smart adaption supported by serviceable writing, interesting characters and a good voice cast that keep everything moving at a good pace for 13 episodes. The world-building, which comes across strongest through the dialogue, hint to the greater politics and history of a well-realised untamed and adversarial universe. I would certainly return for more stories there even if you completely changed the characters. As for the plot I would have preferred a bit more exposition to clarify the where and when of it all as we quickly move from one encounter to another. More than a few times I found myself having to rewind and retrace how we got from A to B but it didn’t stand in the way of my enjoyment. It is a reminder Hollow is an audio drama where attention has to be full. Allowing the dialogue to do the heavy lifting more than exposition, which can break immersion, was the wiser decision at the end of the day. It’s a solid SciFi space adventure that should appeal not only to fans of source material including Apocalypse Now but also fans of SciFi properties such as The Expanse and Hyperion.
