I need to be reminded of this often. One small step at a time.

Nothing has to change miraculously overnight. No one word has to change the way my child behaves forever. No one self-care practice has to make me feel instantly and always better.

Instead everything can change over time. Step by step.

This allows me to practice new actions, for changes to be integrated and for expansion to happen. Over time and with time.

A kindergarten teacher friend once told them that when she first began teaching, she used to try and come up with something new and novel to do with the children every day to show what a great teacher she was.

Until she realised that children benefit from repetition. They like doing the same thing over and over. Hearing the same story, listening to the same song and playing with the same toys. That’s how they learn.

Learning happens over time and with time.

So every time my children need reminding about how to behave, I remind them. Even if I’ve told them before. I tell them with as much love and guidance and care that I can muster in that moment.

And every time I meditate, even if it’s only for a few minutes, and even if some days I can’t seem to settle, I do it again. I keep practicing. I try. I take one small step at a time.

Today I don’t expect miracles. Instead, I take one small step forward.
