Back in 2020 I got to talk to Neelam, a TEDx Speaker and also the founder of Cysters- a charity focused on combating some of the misconceptions around reproductive health and is one of the only South Asian led charities in the UK who focuses on creating a safe space for women of colour who suffer from reproductive health issues.
In the episode Neelam shares her story of being diagnosed with PCOS, what are the common symptoms & misconceptions around PCOS, the idea behind founding Cysters and why women’s health is such a big taboo in South Asian culture.
For those who don’t know, PCOS stands for Polycystic ovary syndrome which affects the woman’s ovaries, caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones and sometimes cysts on the ovaries. Statistics show that 1 in every 10 women in the UK suffer from PCOS and worldwide it’s around 6-10% so it’s very common.
