So to explain why this show works so well, I need to explain the two sides of the show. The actual themes/emotions/undercurrents is remarkably relatable but the rest of the show is creative/fanciful. It's both a break from reality and something that connects to you. I will add that the execution of the show is also good, but you know, I had to cut to the chase.
It's an incredible story that has so many more layers to it than you first suspect. The magic feels so real and I love that Kalila is not a "perfect" character, but one that I'd love to be friends with!
Fantastic!! Amazing drama, fantastic characters, beautiful music, excellent dialog. All around one of my new favorites!
I love this podcast so much, it's a story that makes bad days good and good days better <3
A really cool story with a lot of thought and care put into it
I enjoyed the storytelling and the way that it is set in a world where magic is just as common as going to a chiropractor. The only issue I had was with the very irregular sound levels in season 1, it went from quiet to loud without warning throughout a couple episodes. It sounds like a new editor is in the works for season 2 which will help hopefully!
Any small upcoming business owner can relate to Kalila struggling to start a business. But Kalilas expertise is a bit unusual. The first episode is funny and weird, and there's definitely something, Kalila's not telling us.I'm eager to learn more of the misspells, neighbor quarrels and not always morally correct spells, that seems to follow in Kalila's line of work.A promising premiere of a show, that's both relatable, funny and different.
Wow, what a treat! Kalila is a budget-friendly solution to your magick or mystic needs. I love Kalila immediately, and having her explore the rules of this universe. Witches, changelings, curses, cosmology, and neighborhood squabbles--excited to see what else is in store.
It's hard to describe magic with words. Oh, Lisette Alvarez can do it, as you'll know if you listen to this show, but I'm not sure I can & that's what this show actually is: magic. Yes, it's about magic too but not entirely, no, it's so much more. All I can say is this show is a landmark fiction podcast, & one that finds its way into your heart & stays there forever. One of the most intresting exploration of urban fantasy I have come across
Explores identity and self-love - the parts of ourselves we ignore and the difficulty in confronting certain aspects of ourselves - as well as community trauma and how it intersects with interpersonal trauma. Early episodes provide reflection on human nature, and the plot really picks up near the end of the first season. The sound mixing in the first season can be jarring in a couple of places, but those issues are resolved by season 2. The world building around magic is interesting, including Western and non-Western aspects weaved into normal life; even though Fantasy Issues are added onto the world, real-world prejudices are acknowledged and incorporated into the story. The main VA does a good job selling the character's emotions.
I really enjoy this podcast (still working through it) it's something that makes you think, and the characters are all enjoyable and sweet and perfectly imperfect.
Kalila Stormfire, just wants to live her life doing something she loves, helping people and magic. Other forces seem to be constantly out to drag her down, however. One of those forces being herself. This is a wonderful podcast filled with queer rep, and dealing with the struggles on natural, and supernatural life. It's a tough listen sometimes, but so, so worth it.
