1:54

Hello folks. And welcome

1:56

to 2023. It

1:58

is so exciting

2:01

to be in the new year. Fresh.

2:05

Shiny. All the good things

2:07

and I don't

2:09

know about you, but at this time

2:12

of year, I often find myself

2:15

wanting to do all the things

2:18

there's so much that I am

2:20

excited about and the year feels

2:22

so full of possibility that,

2:26

yeah, it's kind of almost a bit overwhelming. The

2:29

overwhelm of potential

2:31

and possibility. So

2:33

today I wanted to talk a little bit about

2:36

a technique that you can use

2:39

to really focus

2:41

yourself and get yourself into greater

2:43

flow in terms of where

2:46

you focus your attention when

2:48

you're at this exciting time of the year. Or you

2:50

can use this at any time. Of course. Before

2:53

I get into that though. I'd just like to acknowledge

2:56

the traditional owners of the

2:58

land on which I work and live

3:00

the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation and

3:03

pay my respects to their elders past, present

3:05

and emerging. I'd also like to acknowledge

3:07

that sovereignty has never been ceded and

3:09

this wasn't always will be Aboriginal land.

3:13

So. When

3:16

you're in this state and you've got all these things

3:19

that you want to do, and it's all

3:21

exciting. And you're full of ideas.

3:23

I don't know about you. I'm an ideas person.

3:26

I always have more

3:28

that I could do than I have time to do.

3:31

Uh, And a concept

3:33

that's really helped me and some of

3:35

my clients as this idea

3:37

of keystone actions or Keystone projects.

3:41

So, what do I mean by a Keystone action or

3:43

a Keystone project? So

3:45

you may have heard of

3:47

the concept of a Keystone

3:50

habit. This was

3:52

created by Charles Duhigg

3:55

in The Power of Habit. And the idea is

3:57

with a Keystone habit, is

3:59

that it's a habit or a thing that you

4:01

do as part of your routine. That

4:04

if you do that one thing, everything else

4:06

flows better and falls out

4:08

more easily. So let's say for

4:10

example, your Keystone habit might be

4:12

exercise and you know that when you exercise,

4:15

you come home and you naturally want to

4:18

eat better and you sleep better and

4:20

it helps everything else work better.

4:22

And all your other routines and habits and rituals

4:24

fall into place. So,

4:27

the idea of a Keystone action or a Keystone

4:30

project is very similar. So

4:32

if you come to a time of planning

4:35

or, you know, timeline right now, the start

4:37

of the year when you've got all these things ahead of you that you want

4:39

to do. What I recommend

4:41

is laying all of them out

4:43

and having a look at them and looking

4:46

at where the dependencies lie within

4:49

the different actions and things that you want to do.

4:52

What you'll often find is

4:55

that there is a

4:57

kind of a natural order to things.

4:59

Not necessarily everything, but somewhere

5:02

in amongst all the things that you want to do, there

5:04

will be something that if you do

5:06

that thing, all the

5:08

other things will run

5:11

more smoothly. Naturally work better.

5:13

Make more sense. So I'll give you an

5:15

example of this. So at the start of the year, I sat

5:17

down and I,

5:20

uh, revamped my goals

5:22

using my mindful goals framework. I

5:24

say revamped my goals because

5:26

the goals that I set tend

5:29

to be distal

5:31

goals. They're longer. Uh,

5:33

more overarching fuzzy goals,

5:36

which then have smaller actions

5:38

that lie underneath them. So

5:40

these goals take longer to work towards over

5:42

time. So rather than setting new goals every

5:45

year, I look at some

5:48

new goals in some cases, but also

5:50

I look at the goals that I have Can I actually

5:52

tweak those goals and adapt those goals

5:54

to be more relevant to where I am right now? So

5:57

anyway, I did that at the start of the year. And,

5:59

um, I ended up with all

6:01

these different things. And one of the clearest things

6:04

that came out of that process was

6:06

that there was a goal

6:08

in there which was

6:10

around being more clear on

6:13

my business direction. Uh,

6:15

for a while, I've had some questions around

6:17

that. Um, having had a

6:19

baby just over a year ago,

6:21

like that kind of threw a lot of that up in the effort

6:24

for me and had me questioning

6:26

a number of things. So yeah, there

6:28

was this thing around gaining clarity.

6:30

There were a bunch of other goals

6:33

related to business related to life.

6:35

Um, but when I looked at all

6:37

of those goals side by side, what

6:40

was very obvious was that gaining

6:42

that clarity of direction was key

6:45

to all of the other goals. I could

6:47

not move forward confidently

6:49

with goals that had things

6:51

to do with sharing thought

6:54

leadership and making an impact

6:56

and a number of other things

6:58

until I actually had that clarity

7:00

of direction. So

7:02

for me, when I was

7:05

looking at all the fun projects and

7:07

bits and bobs and things I wanted to do.

7:10

Over the next year, over the next weeks

7:12

even. What I was

7:14

really clear about was the fact that, that

7:16

action, that gaining clarity

7:19

was the thing that I needed to focus on the

7:21

most. Because if I were to

7:23

focus on something else, without that clarity,

7:25

what I could actually end up doing is

7:27

going off in the wrong direction or

7:29

putting work into something that

7:31

may not be relevant later down the track.

7:33

So I'm actually putting

7:36

my focus on the wrong

7:38

things. And that's

7:41

when we ended up wasting our time when we ended up

7:43

wasting our energy. And when we've got a

7:45

multitude of things that we want to do,

7:47

we don't want to send ourselves off

7:50

down the wrong track. So,

7:53

if you want to do this for yourself, It's

7:57

not a scientific process. Uh,

8:00

it's something that I recommend

8:02

doing with something that you can maybe

8:04

move around, like post-it notes or

8:07

a digital mind map or something like that.

8:09

And just look at the

8:11

flow of actions. What precedes

8:14

something which precedes something which precedes

8:16

something else? What do you need to do

8:18

first in order for all the other

8:20

actions and all the other projects to flow

8:22

more naturally? Now

8:24

not everything's necessarily going

8:27

to be connected. And

8:29

you might need to make some decisions

8:31

around what is the highest

8:34

priority. And it might be that

8:36

there isn't a direct connection, but there's

8:38

an indirect connection. So let's say for example,

8:41

that you're feeling really

8:43

sluggish and not

8:46

fully well after a very

8:48

festive festive season. Uh,

8:51

and you know, that that

8:53

is meaning that you're not at your best

8:55

when you sit down at your desk or when you're

8:58

playing with your kids and you have goals

9:00

that are linked to,

9:02

you know, being a better parent or increasing

9:06

your business profitability. But it

9:10

might be that focusing on the

9:12

thing that's about your wellness

9:14

and getting you in the

9:16

shape or the physical state or

9:18

the mental state in order

9:20

to support your

9:22

full potential to move some of those

9:25

other things forward. That might be the place that you start.

9:27

That might be the Keystone action. And what

9:29

I suggest is putting

9:31

the majority of your time and energy into

9:34

that Keystone action or

9:36

project. And it's

9:39

not to say that you can't work on other

9:41

things. You might still want to move some things

9:43

forward. You might do other bits and bobs and things.

9:45

You might go, okay, well, I can do this

9:47

much of this activity without

9:50

having that other thing done yet. So I'm going to

9:52

do that. Just to keep things interesting,

9:54

because I don't know about you, but I can get

9:56

a bit bored when I just to focus on the

9:58

one thing, even though I know what's good for me. But

10:00

yeah, if you put a majority of your focus

10:02

into that Keystone action or project.

10:05

And so you're making sure you're working

10:07

on that a little bit every day, even

10:09

if you're fitting everything else in around

10:11

it. I really believe that

10:13

helps us move forward with greater

10:16

ease, with greater flow, with the things that we

10:18

want to do, because it kind

10:20

of clears the path for the things that need

10:22

to happen to happen. So

10:25

that's it for today, just a short

10:28

little episode, because

10:30

I'm still technically kind of on holidays.

10:32

And the weather is too

10:34

nice at the moment to be spending too long podcasting.

10:37

Um, it is a glorious day here

10:39

in Melbourne. If it's wintery

10:41

where you are, I'm sorry. But

10:44

we've had a rubbish summer. So

10:47

got to make the most of this beautiful weather while it's around.

10:50

Uh, so I hope that was helpful.

10:52

Let me know, do you have a Keystone

10:55

action or a Keystone project that's really

10:57

going to help you move things forward with

11:00

greater ease and flow at the start of the year? Uh,

11:03

let me know, send me an email. Hit me up

11:05

on Instagram or LinkedIn. However you

11:07

like to get in touch.

11:10

And that's it for

11:12

today, folks. And I will see you in the

11:14

next episode. Bye.
