Tim and Ollie take a time machine back to 1978 to look at The Jam's third album "All Mod Cons". Fronted by the "angry young man" Paul Weller, The Jam fused Mod style, 60s rock influences and politically charged lyrics into an explosive sound that stood them apart from the wider punk scene. Off the back of a frustrating US tour, a critically-panned second album and a bout of writer's block, The Jam overcame low expectations with a hit third album that showcased a more polished version of their sound as well as Weller's new-found ability to write songs based on character studies. In this episode, the hosts explore the band's origins, Mod style, Britain in the 70s, the making of the album and the special place it occupies in a lineage of English-focused song writing in British rock history.
