Meet the Parents: Stories of International Parental Child AbductionMeet the Parents is a special podcast during November's International Parental Child Abduction Awareness Month. Hosted by Jonathan Turner, parents share stories of their children's international parental abductions, and of their relentless fight to reunite and bring them home.
According to the U.S. State Department, International Parental Child Abduction, or IPCA, occurs when a parent removes of a child from their country of habitual residence with the intent to obstruct or deny access to the other parent. In the United States alone, between 800-1000 children are annually abducted to a foreign nation. Fewer than 16% ever make it back home.
Children who are victims of IPCA greatly suffer the loss and separation from the other parents, extended family and the only homes and communities which they've ever known. They are often taken to other nations where they do not speak or read the language and understand the culture.
Seeking parents attempt to work through multiple governmental channels to return their children home, but must overcome the abducting parents attempts to prolong an abduction and formidable obstacles in the foreign nation and in the home country.
Despite these challenges, the parents featured in this podcast relentlessly pursue their children's return, and have also turned into advocates to prevent other families from experiencing this pernicious form of child abuse and to end this crime against children and families.
