Mischa Kuball, platon's mirror, 13.02.–03.04.2011, ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst. Die Idee zu platon's mirror basiert auf einem der einflussreichsten Texte der europäischen Literatur: Platons Höhlengleichnis. In ihm wird die Unterscheidung zwischen zwei Formen der Wirklichkeit formuliert: Der sichtbaren Realität und der (wahren) Realität der Ideen. In zugleich einfachen und höchst effektiven Anordnungen mit Projektoren und reflektierenden Silberfolien, Fotografien und Videos schafft Kuball einerseits Räume, die als Gleichnisse der Platon'schen Höhlensituation zu verstehen sind, andererseits übersetzt er in seinen Fotografien und Videos das komplexe Verhältnis von Lichtquelle, Spiegelung, Schattenriss und Abbild in scheinbar endlos zu erweiternde Mediationsstufen, auf denen sich die Wirklichkeit als die Wirklichkeit ihrer Reflexion immer erneut konstituiert. platon’s mirror lässt sich nicht nur als Problematisierung der Aktualität Platons verstehen, sondern auch als Wiederbefragung der klassischen Verknüpfung von Lichtmetaphorik und der Idee des aufklärerischen Denkens. In Ergänzung zum gleichnamigen Projekt sind innerhalb der Ausstellung schwarz-weiße CT-Fotografien von Aufnahmeapparaturen zu sehen, welche durch die Redundanz des medialen Verfahrens ebenfalls Fragestellungen nach der Wirklichkeit und ihrer Reproduktion aufwerfen. Mischa Kuball, Plato’s Mirror, 13 February – 3 April, 2011 at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art. The idea for Plato’s Mirror is based on one of the most influential texts in the history of European literature, namely, Plato’s simile of the cave. The text discusses the distinction in the two forms of reality: visible and ideal (true) reality. In a simple, and at once highly effective arrangement with projectors and reflecting silver transparencies, photographs and videos, Kuball creates spaces resembling the Platonic scenario of the cave; at the same time, in his photographs and videos, he also translates the complex relationship of light source, reflection, silhouette and image in apparently endlessly extending levels of mediations on which reality, as the reality of reflection, reconstitutes itself over and again. Plato’s Mirror is not to be understood merely as series of problematic propositions relating to the topicality of Plato’s thought, but also as a renewed inquiry into the classical alliance of the metaphor of light and the notion of Enlightenment thought. As a supplement to the project of the same name, the exhibition also displays black-and-white CT photographs taken by recording devices, which, due to the redundancy of the medial procedure, prompt questions concerning the reality of such images and their reproduction.
