RATING
This episode really got down to the line between what we believe in and what we want for our children. I agree there *shouldn't* be a gap between those things, but there is, and it seems that this gap is the mechanism that brings us to the greatest rate of school segregation since Brown v Board of Education. Excellent reporting.
Still very entertaining but, also, still based on an intellectually dishonest principle. The criticism of involved parents is short-sighted and framed as "white people pushy" without examination of the other side. The 'before' crowd, with low test scores and declining enrollment, were obviously not on the right track. The letter writers from the '60s were not given their due by Chana. Why would a parent, with the means to improve things for their child, not improve things? Instead of painting the white parents as over-bearing, closet-racists as well as an adversary to the PTA and parents of color, they could have been a model to adding the Spanish, Arabic, and other programs the school could have used. Chana argues that one side is all wrong without showing where resentment, pride, and fear kept the old parents from joining and furthering the efforts made by good parents. I'm looking forward to the next episodes and hope they address this story from a more even, honest position.
