Mini: The Algorithmic Manipulation of Kids via Youtube

Hold onto your phones folks, we have a very spooky Minisode in store for you today…A month ago Evan sent Matty this essay by James Bridle “Something is Wrong on the Internet” all about the algorithmic manipulation of our children through Youtube video’s!

After a brief synopsis and a bit of Matt-Back-Patting, the fella’s get into some of the minutia of why we find video’s like this “Aladdin” example so very unsettling. We then dovetail into how they are made and why the characters all look alike, before digging into Peppa Pig with the Finger Family *Gross!  

Familiar characters are used to draw kids’ attention towards the right-hand suggested video’s and within these suggestions are the rabbit holes that kids can tumble down into outright disturbing content. We muse on what the implications of all this might be and how this might be effecting learning outcomes at the university level since Youtube has now been around for 15 years.

Folks, I don’t like telling parents what to do, but this might be one moment where you may want to take a second to think about your kid(s) video streaming usage and I dunno, just be careful.
