In this episode, we review the 2001 Michael Bay film Pearl Harbor, starring Josh Harnett, Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale, and Jennifer Garner. As the name suggests, this film depicts the surprise attack made by the Japanese against America on December 7th, 1941.
Today we honor Doris Miller, born 1919, and served on the battleship West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was the first black American to be awarded the navy cross, which is the highest decoration for valor in combat after the medal of honor. After he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and was awarded the navy cross Miller became a prominent civil rights figure for the military at that time. Tragically he was killed during another Japanese attack while serving on an aircraft carrier in November of 1943. Doris Miller was 24 years old.
