This message comes from NPR sponsor,
0:02
Minx. Season two of the hit comedy
0:05
series premieres Friday, July 21st, only
0:08
on Starz and the Starz app.
0:15
The
0:15
nominations for this year's Primetime
0:17
Emmy Awards were just announced and we're gonna help you
0:19
unpack them. The Emmys being the Emmys, there
0:21
were many familiar series in the mix
0:23
like Succession and Ted Lasso, but
0:25
there were also exciting first-time nominees
0:28
like Andor and Jury Duty, plus
0:31
plenty of satisfying surprises and galling
0:33
snubs. I'm Linda Holmes.
0:35
And I'm Glenn Weldon, and today we're recapping
0:37
this year's Emmy nominations on Pop Culture
0:40
Happy Hour from NPR. Right
0:42
at the top, Linda, talk to me about how weird this
0:44
Emmy season
0:45
is. Yeah, it's a very odd season. The
0:47
Writers Guild has been on strike since May.
0:50
There is absolutely no sign of progress
0:52
on that front. The Screen Actors
0:54
Guild has a contract that as we tape
0:56
this on Wednesday, right after the nominations
0:59
expires tonight, it is not
1:01
clear whether they will extend again or go on
1:04
strike or what will happen. If these
1:06
two strikes are both underway, there's
1:08
not gonna be much in the way of an Emmy campaign season.
1:11
And so it's gonna be very odd in that
1:13
way. I think it's odd also
1:15
because it's just made
1:18
the whole thing feel a little grim.
1:20
It's harder, I think, for people to be as
1:22
fully celebratory as they would be otherwise.
1:24
Yeah, and also we tape this the day after
1:27
deadline and came out with
1:29
a story that quoted an unnamed studio executive
1:31
basically saying that the strategy is to hold out until
1:33
writers start going broke and losing their apartments,
1:36
not understanding that the reason they're striking is
1:38
because writers are going broke and losing their apartments.
1:40
Yeah,
1:40
a little cartoon
1:42
villain. Yeah. In some of that language,
1:44
but yeah. So just keep in mind as we talk, the same executives
1:47
who are probably gonna be crying about how great The Bear
1:49
did with Emmy nominations this year
1:51
are also responsible for the fact that one of its
1:53
writers, Alex O'Keefe, tweeted recently
1:56
that he is barely scraping by between jobs despite
1:58
having such a great gig.
1:59
Okay, thank you for that. Before
2:01
we get to the nominations, I wanted to mention two things
2:04
up top. One, we can't get to every
2:06
category today. These are just some highlights. And two,
2:08
there are a lot of nominations for Amazon. So
2:11
we want to note that Amazon supports NPR and
2:13
pays to distribute some of our content. All
2:16
right, let's get to it starting with comedy. The
2:18
nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series are
2:20
Abbott Elementary, ABC's workplace
2:23
sitcom set in a Philadelphia public school created
2:25
by Quinta Brunson. You'll hear that name again. Barry,
2:28
HBO's violent dark comedy in
2:29
satire about Hollywood where Bill Hader plays
2:32
a hitman turned actor. A hilarious romp.
2:34
Hilarious romp. Barry.
2:37
Speaking of hilarious musical roms,
2:39
The Bear was also nominated. That's FX on Hulu's
2:41
intense and fast paced series about a fine dining
2:44
chef who takes over his family's Chicago Italian
2:46
beef sandwich shop. Yes, chef. Yes, chef.
2:49
Jury duty, Amazon freebies documentary
2:51
style comedy about a jury where one
2:53
juror does not realize everyone else is an actor and
2:55
even the trial is fake. What has been
2:57
mentioned many times on the Emmys is the marvelous Mrs.
3:00
Maisel. This is the final season of
3:02
Amazon's long running series about an aspiring stand
3:04
up comedian played by Rachel Brosnahan, who's
3:07
trying to get her big break. Hulu's
3:09
only murders in the building on which Martin
3:12
Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez play
3:14
true crime fans who investigate a real murder and
3:16
make a podcast about it. Podcast. Podcast.
3:20
Also returning, of course, is Ted Lasso. The
3:22
Apple series starring Jason Sudeikis as an unqualified
3:25
American who takes over as the coach of an English
3:28
soccer team and finally a new
3:30
name breaking through Wednesday. The
3:32
Netflix series about Adams family favorite Wednesday
3:34
Adams played by Jenna Ortega and her adventures
3:37
at the Gloomy Nevermore Academy.
3:39
Linda, what are your thoughts here?
3:40
Well, I think there are a couple of
3:43
really critical favorites that did not
3:45
make this list. Reservation Dogs is
3:47
certainly one. The other two is one. Somebody
3:50
Somewhere is one. I was a huge fan
3:53
of poker face on Peacock,
3:55
which did not get a nomination in this category.
3:58
The thing is these nominations feel to
3:59
me, like once
4:02
people become slightly less enthused about
4:04
something, it usually takes a couple of years
4:06
for their Emmy nominations to
4:08
start to drop off. So I think even though
4:11
there was somewhat less enthusiasm about this season
4:13
of Ted Lasso, for example, it's just not going to drop
4:15
off that fast. So, you know,
4:17
Ted Lasso is still here, Maisel is still here
4:20
and also it's a stacked category. I mean, there are also a
4:22
lot of good entries. So I think there are some very
4:24
disappointing omissions here,
4:27
you know, but also some great ones.
4:29
I'm happy to see jury duty here. That's an extraordinarily
4:31
silly
4:31
show that I enjoyed a lot. Yeah, that was a surprise.
4:34
And you called it in your piece for NPR.
4:36
You called it. Listen, I got my finger on the pulse, buddy.
4:38
You totally do. I'm happy with the repeat
4:40
nominations, Lasso Abbott, Murders, Barry,
4:43
Maisel. I thought both Maisel and Barry ended
4:45
with very strong final seasons.
4:48
Maybe Lasso did too. We're still not sure if it's
4:50
the final season, but whatever. And it's great to see
4:52
the bear here, of course, even though calling
4:54
out a comedy was a stretch, as we've mentioned,
4:56
and it's certainly gotten its fair share of critical attention.
4:59
But if a nomination or a win means
5:02
that more people see it than great, I personally
5:05
didn't love Wednesday as much as most people
5:07
did because it had this romantic
5:09
triangle stuff, which just felt like a fundamental misread
5:12
of the character. But you know what? That's
5:14
not going to be a thing for the next season. So I'm fine. I
5:16
am really heartsick for somebody somewhere because
5:19
that is a show that really could have used
5:21
this kind of love and get more people to see
5:24
it. All right. You want to walk me through lead actress
5:26
in a comedy series?
5:27
Absolutely. So we have Christina Applegate
5:29
for Netflix is Dead to Me. She plays
5:31
a woman whose husband was killed in a hit and run
5:34
accident and then is befriended
5:36
by the driver played by Linda Cardellini.
5:38
Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous
5:41
Mrs. Maisel. She plays housewife
5:43
turned aspiring standup comedian Midge
5:46
Maisel. She's previously won an Emmy for
5:48
this part in 2018. Quinta
5:51
Brunson for Abbott Elementary. She
5:53
plays Jeanine, who's a second grade
5:55
teacher at the underfunded
5:57
Philadelphia Public School of
5:59
the title.
5:59
Natasha Lyonne
6:02
now, geesh, boy do
6:04
I like Natasha Lyonne. She plays Charlie
6:06
in the PCHH favorite
6:09
poker face. The Peacock series is about a woman
6:11
with an uncanny ability to
6:13
know when somebody is lying, but
6:16
she then goes on the run, she solves murders
6:18
and crimes and there are a million great guest stars.
6:21
And then finally, Jenna Ortega, who plays
6:23
the titular Wednesday
6:26
Adams in Wednesday. What
6:29
do you think, Glenn?
6:29
I love seeing Jenna Ortega here. She's the best part
6:32
of that show and without
6:34
hacks in the mix, right? Because of the scheduling.
6:36
Right, it was off this year. Right, without Jean Smart in the mix.
6:38
I think this is Quinta's to lose, right?
6:40
I mean, I think so. I can imagine
6:43
Rachel Brosnahan going out with a bang,
6:45
given how heavily decorated that show's been. Lyonne
6:48
would also be wonderful for me. I think
6:50
she's also somebody who's been around for a really long
6:53
time. And I can imagine kind of her belovedness
6:56
and connectedness and the fact that that's
6:58
a Ryan Johnson show. I mean, I
7:00
can see it for her. I always do
7:02
this to myself. My faves do not
7:04
wind up winning, but yeah. I mean, look, if you're
7:06
right and it's Quinta Brunson's to lose, that's great
7:09
too.
7:09
Absolutely, all right. So lead actor in a comedy
7:11
series, we get Bill Hader for Barry.
7:13
He plays a sociopathic hitman who tries to forget
7:15
his past and become an actor. Hilarious. Exactly.
7:19
Your sides will ache.
7:20
Sorry, I can't stop. Hader has won twice
7:22
before for this role. Jason Siegel
7:25
for the Apple TV series Shrinking, he plays a
7:27
widow therapist to adopt some unexpected methods
7:29
for his therapy patients. Martin
7:32
Short, but not Steve Martin for only
7:34
murders in the building. He plays a failed Broadway
7:36
director who starts a true crime podcast
7:38
with Steve Martin and Selena Gomez to investigate a murder.
7:41
Jason Sudeikis heard of him for Ted Lasso
7:44
heard of it. He plays, well, Ted, the
7:46
American football coach now coaching a UK
7:48
soccer club and trying to inspire them to win.
7:51
Sudeikis
7:51
previously won Emmys for this same role in 2021 and 2022.
7:55
Is he going to go for the hat trick as a cocky
7:58
turn, right? No, yeah, a hockey turn.
7:59
the three thing in soccer, Jeremy
8:03
Alan White for the Bear. He plays fine
8:05
dining chef Carmi who returns home to Chicago
8:08
to help turn around the family sandwich shop
8:10
after the death of his brother. Linda, I bet you
8:12
have a favorite here.
8:13
You know, I am always going to be in the tank
8:15
for Jeremy Alan White because that show
8:17
is the most fascinating and intense
8:20
thing I watched all year. At the same time, I don't think
8:22
it's a comedic performance. So I
8:24
think I would probably root sentimentally
8:26
for Jason Siegel who I discovered
8:29
this is Jason Siegel's first Emmy
8:31
nomination ever. And if you think about how
8:34
long he was on Freaks and Geeks and
8:36
how I met your mother and like, it's
8:38
amazing to me that this is his first Emmy nomination.
8:41
And I think he's great on shrinking. I really love
8:43
shrinking. I'm a little shocked that Harrison
8:45
Ford did not get a supporting
8:47
nomination for shrinking. I'm thrilled that Jessica
8:50
Williams did, but Jason
8:52
Siegel, man, I think he's a super interesting
8:54
dude and I will be rooting for him, I think. Yeah.
8:57
That's what I think of Jeremy Alan White as a comedy.
8:59
Yeah, there is that. Yeah,
9:01
the Harrison Ford thing is really surprising because Emmys historically
9:03
love when movie actors cross over and yet
9:06
now. Okay, so coming up, we'll talk about the nominees
9:08
and snubs in the drama and limited
9:10
series categories.

10:02
right, picking up with drama. Linda,
10:04
can you dramatically tell me the outstanding drama series?
10:07
I will do it as dramatically as possible. The nominees
10:09
are Andor, the Star Wars Disney
10:12
Plus thriller that follows Diego
10:14
Luna on his journey from scoundrel
10:16
to rebel hero. Better Call
10:19
Saul, The Breaking Bad prequel, which also
10:21
aired on AMC. It stars
10:23
Bob Odenkirk as ethically dubious
10:26
public defender Jimmy McGill as
10:28
he slowly devolves into a sleazy
10:30
lawyer to criminals and renames
10:32
himself Saul Goodman. The
10:34
Crown
10:35
frequent nominee, frequent nominee inspired
10:38
by real events. This Netflix dramatization
10:40
tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the
10:43
political and personal events that shaped her reign.
10:46
Drama.
10:47
I asked for it. You're doing it. House
10:49
of the Dragon is HBO's prequel to Game of
10:51
Thrones, but instead of a world spanning tale
10:53
of rival clans jockeying for
10:55
power. House of the Dragon keeps
10:58
it in the family. The Targaryen
11:00
family, that is. Pretty
11:03
good for somebody who doesn't want to give a throw.
11:04
I was gonna say. The Last of
11:06
Us offers a fungus based twist
11:08
on the zombie apocalypse. The HBO series
11:11
follows a young girl played by Bella Ramsey,
11:13
who's mysteriously immune to the fungal
11:15
infection into Gruff, taciturn
11:18
protector, played by Pedro
11:20
Pascal. And of course, HBO's
11:23
succession, huge nomination
11:26
list this year, follows the Roy
11:28
family, a billionaire dynasty that owns a
11:30
conservative leaning media conglomerate
11:33
they wrapped up this year. Whew,
11:35
made me crazy. A resort should be
11:37
relaxing, but the HBO series, The White Lotus,
11:39
which takes place at a resort of the same
11:42
name, is instead uncomfortable,
11:44
even painful, always meme
11:47
spewing. And the Showtime
11:50
thriller Yellow Jackets follows what happens
11:52
when a high school girl's soccer team's
11:54
plane crashes in the Canadian
11:57
wilderness and the aftermath.
11:59
And let me just
11:59
say Aftermath is doing a lot of heavy
12:02
lifting in that sentence.
12:04
Glenn, what do you think?
12:05
I mean, these are salad picks. This
12:07
was a strange year because the only three
12:09
holdovers from last year are Succession, Yellow Jackets
12:11
and Better Call Saul, although the White Lotus
12:14
and the Crown have been nominated before. Right,
12:16
right. The newcomers here are Andor, which
12:18
I am just delighted about because it takes
12:20
the cartoonishly capital evil
12:23
of the Star Wars universe and really
12:25
unpacks it and how it functions. It's
12:27
a lot of fun. House of the Dragon
12:29
surprised some people and The Last of Us surprised, I think,
12:31
no one. Justice for Bad Sisters
12:34
though, which is the mystery series starring
12:35
Sharon Horgan as one of five sisters involved
12:37
in the murder of one truly bad dude. Horgan
12:40
got nominated for acting and for writing that
12:42
show, so I'm okay with that. Amazon
12:45
cannot feel great about the Lord of the Rings,
12:47
the rings of power being shut out of the major
12:49
awards given how much money they've sunk
12:51
into it. And again,
12:54
it's great that House of the Dragon got a drama nomination,
12:56
but no acting nominations at all.
12:59
And one of the things that kept Game of Thrones
13:01
going was the raft of Emmys it could
13:03
be depended to get every year.
13:06
And I should note here that it's good that both Murray
13:08
Bartlett and Nick Overman got nominated for guest
13:11
actor for their episode of The Last of Us,
13:13
which feels right and good and somehow true.
13:15
Yeah, even though I got to say they are
13:17
up against James Cromwell from Succession in that
13:19
category who blew me away
13:21
this year as well. I don't know, man. It's a very tough
13:23
category.
13:24
Next up, outstanding lead actress
13:26
in a drama series, Sharon Horgan, as I mentioned,
13:29
for Apple TV series Bad Sisters. She decides
13:31
to team up with her sisters to murder her brother-in-law.
13:34
Melanie Lynskey for playing Shauna Sadecki
13:36
in the Showtime series Yellow Jackets, one of the women
13:38
who survived the plane crash. Elizabeth
13:40
Moss for playing Offred in the Hulu series The Handmaid's
13:43
Tale. Bella Ramsey
13:45
for playing Ellie in the HBO series The Last
13:47
of Us. She's a kid who's immune to the mysterious plague.
13:50
Carrie Russell, you predicted this for the Netflix drama
13:52
The Diplomat. She plays a diplomat to the UK
13:55
who is under consideration for the vice presidency. And
13:57
finally, Sarah Snook for playing Shiv Roy.
13:59
in the HBO series Succession. She
14:02
jumps from supporting actress. This year, they finally submitted
14:04
her as lead actress, which makes sense. What do you think?
14:06
Yeah. I mean, my assumption
14:08
is sort of that just based
14:10
on
14:11
the position of succession and the position of
14:13
this role that this is Sarah Snook's to
14:15
lose. I could be wrong about
14:17
that. Certainly. I'm not surprised,
14:20
as you mentioned, that this is the representation of
14:22
the diplomat that we got. Keri Russell was
14:24
nominated several times for the Americans. She never
14:26
won. The B.M.B.'s love Keri Russell.
14:29
I think she's great in the diplomat. That was a show
14:31
I really liked and I'm pleased to
14:33
see some recognition for it. Talk
14:36
to me a little bit about Rachel Weiss because I didn't
14:38
watch Dead Ringers, but a lot of people really loved
14:40
Dead Ringers.
14:40
Yeah. I didn't love the show. I loved these
14:42
performances because she played a pair of
14:45
twins. It was a very showy,
14:48
chewy role, but when she needed
14:50
to kind of modulate it and just
14:52
convey who you were looking at with just a
14:55
glimmer in the eye or something, she could do it. I'm
14:57
surprised she didn't because it is the kind of
14:59
very showy role that the Emmys love.
15:01
Yeah, I agree. I agree. All right. Walk me through
15:04
an outstanding lead actor in a drama series.
15:06
All right. We have Jeff Bridges
15:08
for playing a former CIA
15:10
operative in the FX series The
15:13
Old Man. That
15:13
was a show. That was on. Pedro
15:16
Pascal for playing Joel in the HBO
15:18
series The Last of Us. We've talked about that one. Bob
15:21
Odenkirk for playing lawyer
15:23
Saul Goodman one last season
15:26
in the AMC series Better Call Saul.
15:29
And then from HBO's Succession, we've got three.
15:32
Brian Cox for playing patriarch Logan
15:35
Roy, Kieran Culkin for playing
15:37
Roman Roy, and Jeremy
15:40
Strong for playing Kendall Roy. It's
15:42
so funny to me because the fact that Culkin
15:45
moved into lead along with
15:47
Sarah Snook means that Succession now
15:49
has four lead actors nominated. And
15:52
at some point you start to wonder if everyone
15:54
is a lead, is anyone. And
15:57
if you know sort of the progression of this season,
15:59
it's actually
15:59
Brian Cox where you think like maybe
16:02
not. But I think that was not going to
16:04
happen. So look, I love all these performances,
16:07
but that's a lot of lead actors.
16:08
This is when you start to worry that these
16:11
great performances are going to start to kind of
16:13
cannibalize each other in terms of the voting.
16:15
Yeah. And maybe leave some room
16:17
for Bob Odenkirk to finally get
16:20
the Emmy. He has been denied for playing
16:22
lawyer Saul Goodman on Better Call Saul. He's been
16:25
nominated six times for that role
16:27
and hasn't won. And, you know, well, five times before
16:29
this, this is his sixth. So hopefully, I mean,
16:32
I like all these performances, but I, you know, sentimentally
16:34
I'm rooting for Bob. Yeah, I get that. All
16:37
right, moving on to Outstanding Limited or
16:38
Anthology Series. First up, the Netflix
16:41
series Beef in which a road rage incident
16:43
between Ali Wong and Steven Yeun spirals
16:45
out of control. Then the weirdly
16:47
titled Dahmer hyphen monster
16:50
colon, the Jeffrey Dahmer story, which
16:52
is part of a Ryan Murphy Netflix
16:54
true crime anthology series. It's about,
16:57
you know, serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
16:59
There's Daisy Jones and the six, the Amazon prime
17:01
miniseries chronicling a fictional 1970s
17:04
rock band. Fleishman is in
17:06
trouble. The FX on Hulu miniseries starring
17:08
Jesse Eisenberg is a man dating for the first time
17:10
after his divorce. And one of
17:13
the biggest surprises, I think Obi-Wan
17:15
Kenobi, the Disney plus miniseries
17:17
starring Ewan McGregor as the iconic Star
17:20
Wars character.
17:21
Talk to me.
17:22
Yeah. Well, first, I mean, I think the first interesting thing
17:24
is beef had a really strong showing
17:26
in these Emmys. And I think there was a little
17:28
bit of a question in the air about whether they
17:30
would be negatively affected by a controversy
17:33
that came up shortly after that show premiered
17:36
about some extremely distasteful
17:38
rape jokes that had been made by David Cho,
17:40
who's one of their supporting cast
17:43
members. But it appears that from
17:45
a PR perspective, they have weathered
17:47
that given the strong showing of
17:49
the series in this set of nominations.
17:51
I
17:52
think from a perspective
17:54
of critical praise, it's certainly not a surprise
17:56
to see them nominated. I think like you said, the
17:59
surprise here is
17:59
Obi-Wan Kenobi. Did you watch that?
18:01
I did. And, you
18:03
know, while Andor was among
18:06
a very small number of people, was just being talked
18:10
up and critically acclaimed, Obi-Wan Kenobi
18:12
did not have that same kind of impact,
18:14
did not have that same kind of, I
18:17
think, groundswell behind it. So I was really
18:19
surprised to see it popped up here. It was fine, but
18:21
it was no Andor.
18:22
Yeah. It's so interesting to me. And you
18:24
can say this about drama series too. You know,
18:28
really are seeing a
18:29
space for genre shows
18:32
in these kind of serious categories like
18:34
drama and limited series, which
18:36
I think is great. It's interesting that the genres
18:39
that have kind of made it in there are more
18:41
on the sci-fi and fantasy side,
18:43
as opposed to like maybe other kinds
18:46
of genre shows like procedurals or something
18:48
like that. It's clear that at least in some
18:50
cases, there is a place for genre in
18:52
all of this.
18:53
All right. Let's go to outstanding lead actress
18:55
in a limited or anthology series or movie.
18:58
Linda, go ahead.
18:59
Yeah. This is a stacked category. Also you have
19:01
Lizzie Kaplan for Fleishman is in Trouble.
19:03
She plays Libby, who's the best friend of the
19:05
protagonist, Toby. Jessica
19:07
Chastain for playing country singer
19:10
Tammy Wynette in the Showtime miniseries,
19:12
George and Tammy. Dominique
19:14
Fishback for the Amazon Prime
19:16
miniseries, Swarm. She plays an awkward
19:19
woman who is obsessed with a pop superstar.
19:22
Katherine Hahn for the Hulu
19:24
miniseries, Tiny Beautiful Things. She plays
19:26
a woman who becomes a revered advice
19:29
columnist when her own life is falling apart.
19:31
Riley Keough for Daisy Jones and
19:33
the Six. She played the titular
19:36
singer Daisy Jones and Ali Wong
19:38
for Beef. She plays Amy, a well-to-do
19:41
entrepreneur who gets involved in a life-changing
19:44
road rage incident. Do you have opinions
19:47
here, Glenn?
19:47
Not opinions because I like all these performances,
19:49
but were I a betting man? I mean, Jessica
19:52
Chastain has won for playing a woman
19:55
named Tammy with a Southern accent previously.
19:57
Yeah. She played Tammy Faye Baker. So, I mean, it's
19:59
precedent.
19:59
Right? Yeah. Go with that. I
20:02
mean, there is definitely precedent for
20:04
that, as well as what you mentioned, which is the kind of
20:06
movie star crossover into the Emmys
20:08
thing. But yeah, the performances that
20:10
I have seen in this category, I also really
20:12
liked. I liked Ali Wong and Beef. I really
20:15
liked Fleishman Who's in Trouble, and I thought
20:17
Lizzie Kaplan was one of the best parts of it, as
20:19
she is the best part of so many things. As
20:22
I said, stacked category full of really good
20:24
actors, including Dominique Fishback, who I think is just a
20:26
super interesting young actor
20:29
who I'm always excited to see.
20:30
Yep. Finally, we have Outstanding
20:33
Lead Actor in Limited or Anthology Series
20:35
or Movie, and that is Taron Edgerton, for
20:37
playing James Keene in the Apple TV Plus crime
20:40
drama Blackbird. Kumail
20:43
Nanjiani for Hulu's Welcome to Chippendales.
20:45
He plays Soman Steve Banerjee, the
20:47
founder of the male review club Chippendales.
20:50
Evan Peters for playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer
20:53
in the Netflix series, Dahmer.
20:56
Daniel Radcliffe for paying Weird Al in
20:59
the Roku original film Weird, the
21:01
Al Yankovic story, both Roku and Freebie
21:03
showing up at these Emmys. Michael Shannon
21:06
for playing country singer George Jones in the Showtime
21:08
miniseries George and Tammy, and
21:10
Steven Young for playing Danny Cho in Beef.
21:12
He's a struggling contractor who gets involved in
21:15
a road rage incident that spirals out
21:17
of control. Any thoughts here? I bet you
21:19
got one.
21:19
Well, look, Kumail is a friend of the show.
21:22
He's been on the show. We appreciate him.
21:24
And so obviously the heart wants what it
21:26
wants. However, in this category, if
21:28
I had to guess, I would say Steven Young,
21:31
probably. Really? Well, just
21:33
because I think people love Steven Young so
21:35
much. I also do think that
21:37
there is a chance that Evan Peters
21:40
for kind of being maybe
21:42
the thing people like the most
21:44
about Dahmer hyphen Monster Cole in the Jeffrey
21:46
Dahmer story, which is,
21:48
I think a franchise over on Netflix that
21:51
people are a
21:52
little cringey about. And yet
21:54
I think Evan Peters has a good reputation.
21:56
So I can definitely imagine that happening. And I'm
21:58
so delighted to see Danny.
21:59
Radcliffe here, mostly because I
22:02
think a broad comedic performance is always
22:04
welcome in any category that
22:06
leaves itself open to it. So listen,
22:09
I think there are a lot of possibilities
22:12
and, you know, you can root for your pal and
22:14
also, you know, kind of understand
22:16
that there are a lot of good performances in this category.
22:18
Yeah, we'll be rooting for a pal.
22:20
There are certain realities in Hollywood and I think one of
22:22
them might be the Michael Shannon of it all, just because
22:25
he's a big old name and that's a very conventional biopic.
22:28
And so Emmys love what they love. It's true. It's true.
22:30
Well, we didn't get to everything. We couldn't possibly
22:33
get to everything, but those are, you know, kind
22:35
of skimming off the top here. We want to know what you
22:37

Numbers that explain the economy. We love them
23:26
at the Indicator for Planet Money and on Fridays, we
23:28
discuss indicators in the news like
23:31
job numbers, spending, the cost of
23:33
food, sometimes all three.
23:34
So my indicator is about why
23:36
you might need to bring home more bacon to afford
23:39
your eggs. I'll be here all week.
