RATING
David Ault, and Mark Nixon make an incredible team. I don't really know what to compare this podcast too, as it very much stands on it's own feet and offers both entertainment and thoughtful discussion. The stories are fantastic, the new perspectives it brings are wonderful, and the post story discussions are like sitting with the horror geek friends you wish you had since high school.
A beautifully done collection of new and old ghost stories created by utterly talented people. This podcast has quickly become one of my favourites, and I'm very much looking forward to season 3.
Shadows at the Door has a great combination of stories and friends talking. Each episode has a story, sometimes from the public domain or sometimes new pieces written for the podcast. After each story the hosts, Mark Nixon and David Ault (who is often the entire cast), chat about the story. Their chemistry is brilliant fun and they mean into it with their drunk ghost story episodes. The story-tellong is versatile and while it is an anthology podcast, some episodes feature a recurring character, Professor Troughton, and an adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray spans three episodes. It's hard to choose favourites, but I especially enjoyed 'Slender Chances' and 'Gnothi Seaiton Audio Tour'. The first is a fun spin on Slenderman by Mark Nixon, and the latter by M Regan is a different approach to story telling by using a museum audio guide as a framing device.
This podcast is so funny with the banter between David and Mark. Really compelling stories and performances. I love every episode. If you enjoy horror podcasts with heart and humor, this one's a winner.
I'm not sure what I enjoy more about about this podcast, the engaging adaptations of classic horror interspersed with new works, or the near-constant awkward and adorable queerplatonic flirting between the two hosts. I've not yet come across a series I so desperately wish I could submit scripts to. SE1E08 Quicksilver Spirit was particularly frightening if you've ever had to deal with disposing of mercury...
An e-book like show telling ghost stories. The atmosphere is tense brought on by the nature of the stories, the excellent presenter / voice actor and a rich soundscape, but also cosy in a way. It feels like sitting in the dark listening to folktales. I don´t know if David Ault is going to do all the shows, but let me say this: If anyone can bring a story to life, it´s David!
I LOVE this podcast! It's more slow burn horror than jump scares, so it creates atmosphere and a solid focus on storytelling. I also love that the hosts discuss the stories afterwards. Drunken Ghost Stories episodes are always a fantastic listen as well.
