5 Simple Tips for Outlining Your Site Structure

1 - Start with paper and pen.

  • Before rearranging your menu or creating random new categories, go offline and map out how you want your site to be structured.
  • Consider traffic flow. Check your analytics to see most common entry and exit pages.

2 - Know your goals

  • Email list subscribers, New clients, Affiliate or product sales
  • Understand that your content should be driving traffic to help you meet your goals

3 - Create paths for your readers & search bots to follow

  • Think about your traffic flow and how you can get readers to continue clicking through to various parts of your site. This lowers your bounce rate, and helps them learn more about you and your topic
  • Every post and page should link to other related posts and pages, which we’ll touch on more in #5

4 - Outline your main categories & cornerstone content

  • You shouldn’t try to create content about ALL THE THINGS. Niche down and limit yourself to no more than 4 major categories of content.
  • Each of these main categories should also have one piece of cornerstone content that is keyword-rich.
  • Think of cornerstone content this way: if you wanted to share content with a brand new reader to let them know what your site or business is about, this is what they should read

5 - Use backlinks wisely & properly

  • Mentioned earlier, every piece of content should link to other relevant content, but this should be strategic.
  • Content related to your cornerstone content should link back to your cornerstone content. Ultimately, these pieces of cornerstone content will be what you rank highest for in Google search, and internal backlinks back to these pieces of content will help you do that.
  • Make sure all backlinks are FOLLOW, and include anchor text with keywords related to the piece of content you’re linking to.
