RATING
Liked the first season but then I kinda stopped caring. Still want to know how it ends though.
A [mostly] single narrator horror/dark urban fantasy story following a woman with mysterious powers searching for answers about her past she can't remember after a cult ritual. The first season follows Wren as she tracks down the other people who were in the attic with her and she learns why the cult is interested in her. The second season also has a monster of the week format as more of the ongoing plot is revealed. Features cult, apocalyptic and primarily descriptive body horror. The sound design is minimal. Includes themes of destiny/free will (especially in the romantic subplot), community, and moving on with life after upheaval.
This was a fun and interesting series.
Not your usual supernatural horror. I'm still thinking about it, even more than a year after its finale. And when a story touches strings, that's a good story.
This was a great podcast. I wish there was more. The ending jumping into the future left so many opportunities for more stories to bridge between the time jump. The different mosaics that were created, and what they could do was fascinating. It was almost like listening to the show Legion.
This was intense. I liked the characters. I enjoyed the storyline. I love a flawed hero . I ran through this one quick.
One of my all time favorite podcasts! Love everything about it.
I really enjoyed this podcast! The mystery was fun and I LOVED the love story. I also thought the last episode tied everything together really well!
Great ominous energy! Very creepy and atmospheric, with a lot of twists and turns that I thought I saw coming before they turned into something else entirely. In the best way possible of course. Season 2 introduces more characters into the mix, and you hear from more than just Wren towards the end and in the middle of season 3, which is always fun in a show with one usual narrator. It wraps up pretty quickly, I wouldn't have minded a few more episodes, but there's always the creators budget to consider and it leaves room for thought and wondering. Despite this the end is still very satisfying and left me with a good feeling for the rest of my day.
Not a fan, too much gore / "body horror".
A very creepy and effective dark sci-fi / horror podcast, with some genuinely new ideas. Recommended.
It's everything I always wanted in podcast form. 10/10
Brilliant!! Someone please make this into a Netflix series or something …
Excellent premise and story with a few minor shortcomings. The plot, writing, and world building are all excellent. There is enough variety of story and characters to keep things interesting, and the overall concept is fascinating. The main character can become a bit reductive at points, but there is plenty here to keep things fresh.
A classic fiction podcast that helped craft the medium. Great acting, sound deign, and a compelling story!
Was a little hard to follow but really interesting story telling
If it were just the first season, I would give Spines a 5 - supurbly acted, fantastically creepy, fascinating. Unfotunately it wore thin for me the longer it went on, shifting from horror to some kind of half-baked superhero story about a rag tag team vs equally rag-tag villains. Though I enjoyed some of the elements in the later seasons, the show gets less interesting over time instead of more. This is one time when I feel like the "worse" ending would have been a better choice. But season 1 is still really good and deserves a listen, particularly if you're into body horror.
amazing story, great narration, and awesome representation of a nonbinary person/people, in a meaningful way. a touch of eugenicism but I suppose they are the enemies in this story. magnus archives-esque, for people who enjoy that show too
Good amount of creepy in this one. It was what I was looking for.
