Mrs. Alice Moore Dunbar Nelson was a poet, essayist, diarist, and activist. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to mixed-race parents. Her heritage contributed to her complex understanding of gender, race, and ethnicity, topics she often addressed in her work. Her first book, Violets and Other Tales (1895) is a collection of short stories and poems in which she addresses topics such as racism, oppression, family, work, and sexuality.
