We are on a mission to develop a new editorial mission for Otium Group.

As our business undergoes change, we’ve come to a sticking point that we need to get right as it underpins the steps we take moving forward.

What is the Editorial Mission?

Your editorial mission distills, right down to a sentence or phrase, what you stand for and what your business has to offer its target audience. Timbo Reid followers are familiar with this term but if you haven’t come across it before, you can find out more here.

The editorial mission is different from your elevator pitch, it is more of an internal elevator pitch.

A good way to approach it is to think of it as the “Why” your business exists, what you do and what you have to offer your target market.

The importance of defining your editorial mission?

Your editorial mission dictates your company’s content and the messages you send out to your audience. It dictates everything from your website copy, to your podcast content and social media messages, it all flows right through.

Once you get the editorial mission right, it will make your sales process easier and more refined.

Challenges faced in developing the editorial mission
In the small business world you want to attract as many potential clients as possible and there can be the fear of what if your editorial mission leaves people out.

The key reason for having an editorial mission is to ensure you are, at all times, speaking to the right target audience and attracting the customers who are the right fit for you business. You don’t want that message to be too broad but at the same time it can’t be too niche or technical.
