When I was growing up, my mother (who was a very spiritual person), would dabble in all sorts of different philosophies and religions, extracting useful bits from each and sharing them with me. Being so young, I never really realized how big of a gift this was. I never quite understood the wisdom that she was sharing, even though I tried!
As an adult, I find it so fascinating to dive back into her teachings and the ancient texts that she collected. Now that I’m old enough to understand, I’ve realized how valuable these insights really are -- for personal AND professional development.
The expression that my mother used most often when I was growing up was to “be like the river.” Of course, this made little sense to me as a little girl, but now that I’m older I am blown away by how well this metaphor applies to all facets of our lives. The water metaphor provides insights that can help us lead lives that are free of envy, competition, strife, and resistance. It can help improve interpersonal connections, business dealings, and self acceptance.
