This is the 10% happier podcast. I'm
0:10
Dan Harris. Happy
0:23
Friday, everybody. Time for a bonus meditation.
0:25
This week we're bringing you a meditation
0:28
led by my good friend, Seben
0:31
A. Selassie. It's all about
0:33
this phrase that she has tattooed
0:35
on her arm that I have found
0:38
very hard to understand and yet quite
0:40
intriguing. The phrase is trust life. What
0:44
does this mean, actually? I'm attracted to
0:46
it and also suspicious
0:49
of it simultaneously. Seb's
0:51
going to guide a practice here to get this concept
0:54
into your molecules. Just
0:56
to say before we get started, if you want to
0:58
come practice with Seben A and with me
1:02
and with our great friend and meditation
1:04
teacher, Jeff Warren, we've got two opportunities
1:07
coming up, one in May, one in
1:09
October, both at the Omega
1:11
Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. We
1:13
call them meditation parties because we do a lot of
1:15
meditating but also a lot of socializing.
1:18
There's even a completely optional
1:20
dance party. You
1:22
can get more information over on
1:25
the events page at danharris.com.
1:28
Here we go now with Seben A. Selassie. Hi,
1:32
this is Seben A. Wow.
1:36
Things have been bananas out there. Sometimes
1:39
we want certainty about how things will turn
1:41
out. But here's the thing.
1:45
We can't really control life, not
1:47
just with our current situation, ever.
1:52
There's uncertainty built right into
1:55
existence. What
1:57
we can do is get comfortable with uncertainty.
2:00
certainty, and cultivate trust
2:02
in life, even
2:04
in the most uncertain times. Let's
2:08
try practicing that. Begin
2:11
by settling in and getting
2:13
comfortable. If
2:16
you like, close your eyes, or
2:20
keep them open with a soft focus in front of
2:22
you. Solving
2:26
our breath is a great way to
2:28
both witness change and build trust
2:30
in the process of life. Let's
2:35
begin by connecting to the breath. Take
2:38
a few deep breaths in and out through
2:41
the nose. Feel
2:51
the air coming in and out of the body.
2:58
In and
3:01
out. In
3:07
and out. Pay
3:12
attention to how the breath feels. And
3:18
notice if there's any pause between the
3:20
in-breath and the out-breath. Try
3:25
it on your own for a bit. You
3:58
Don't need to do anything. In
4:00
the body keep the breathing. Try
4:07
bringing a sense of appreciation to
4:09
the experience of breathing. Take
4:15
a moment's notice what that
4:17
appreciation of each press feels
4:20
like. Paying
4:54
attention and this way slows down
4:57
out of the rush of trying
4:59
to make something in particular happen
5:01
or figure anything. But
5:05
of course the mind might be tripping
5:08
you up, demanding that you think about
5:10
other things that you're afraid might happen.
5:14
The mind thinking is not a
5:16
problem. that's the habit pattern of
5:18
our minds. Our minds think. You.
5:22
Can simply noticed that and bring
5:24
your attention back to this intimate
5:26
awareness of breathing. Noticing
5:31
again the in breath. And
5:35
he pause. And
5:38
the out breath. Whenever
6:04
it feels like things are uncertain. We.
6:07
Can return to the practice. Of trusting
6:09
life. One breast at a
6:11
time. You.
6:16
Can open your eyes now and begin to move
6:19
your hands and feet. Thank
6:24
you for your practice today. May.
6:27
You continue to trust life. Press
6:29
a breath. Thanks
6:35
again to Seven A! You can find
6:37
