There’s a time traveling train, y’all. A TRAIN. That TRAVELS THROUGH TIME. Needless to say, I love the trope alone, but as a bonus this show also happens to be really really really frickin’ good! Our protagonist, Nora, is so instantly likable and entertaining--vulnerable yet dry and sardonic, self-effacing and competent, funny and witty and so relatable. The show is an adventure at heart but also comes with a second episode where Nora realizes that she has run out of antidepressants and is now stuck stopping only in time periods where she can’t get more (the train just keeps going and won’t make a stop in her time for a long while, we’re assured right off the bat), which is an issue we’ve never seen addressed in time traveling narratives that we’ve always wondered about because how does NO ONE need their meds while they’re on quests??? It’s relatable and also gives her a chance to be an extremely competent and proactive protagonist (SCIENCE) and gives her very relatable, not often discussed obstacles that are so often overlooked in most media.
The 12:37 is really everything you could want in a show, It's like sci-fi meets fantasy meets action heist adventure show, but with queer characters, which is to say I am of course in love with it.…. subscribe now !!
This podcast features time travelling trains, found family, queer representation, and a main character I love. What more could you want?
Firstly, it’s just really dull. Everything sounds like it's recorded in a tin can and there's nothing that marks out any of the places they visit as distinctive, which is usually the charm of a show about travelling to different places. Secondly, these are a couple of errors no virologist would ever make:- Treat safety in the lab as unimportant- Try to add N2, ie. Nitrogen gas, which is famously inert, to a compound- Think that tuberculosis is caused by a virus. It's caused by a bacterium. - Think that antibiotics work on viruses. Antibiotics only work on bacteria. The last two mistakes are particularly hilarious and embarrassing for a protagonist who boasts about studying viruses for 10 years. Also, do you know how long it takes to research these incredibly basic facts for a show in which this is supposed to be the protagonist's core competency? Google returned me the top result for "tuberculosis" from Wikipedia in which the first sentence reads "Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria." in 0.46 seconds. Given this level of research effort, I shudder to think what easily avoided errors they come up with when they eventually tackle vaccines.
An interesting idea about a time-traveling train but the show hasn't really exploited that. Some really fun characters with a nice back and forth but overall the main story hasn't really grabbed me yet. The show deals with queer issues very well and I can't wait for them to dive even deeper into that. Also if you have an issue with lackluster audio quality this show isn't for you as the audio for the show isn't the greatest.
