Ah, the Black Tapes. One of the earliest supernatural horror podcasts that developed the genre, and still a compelling story with lots of mysteries to be worked. I really, really, wanted to give this five stars, but the elephant in the room is the third season; it ends abruptly, or rather, stops. There's no resolution to many of the plots threads raised, which is a real shame. My recommendation? Listen to it, assume the end of season 2 is the series ending, then listen to series 3 as a curiosity.
Enjoyed it as a whole though repetitive at times (more so the music and FX). Overall it is eery and cool enough to follow if you are into the genre. First season is the best. Outcome/ending not so satisfying. Enjoyable though.
Got really caught up in the story. Sacred geometry is a thing.
Now if only we could get an ending already.
Some great episodes, but the ending left me in limbo.
Like all the PNWS podcasts, it starts brilliant but they just are not able to keep the mystery or suspense going effectively. A shame.
Hello! My name is Ken. As a fellow podcaster, I know how important reviews can be to creators like us. That’s why, in the spirit of the season, I’ve decided to give your podcast 5 stars. Amazing podcast. Mystery, suspense, twists in the scenario... Once you start listening to this podcast, you have to listen to all episodes.
Loving it so far!!
The audio is well done! It's a pretty interesting for the most part, until they seem to be going around in circles about midway through season two. I felt like some episodes just retread on the same themes and same concepts they tread before. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the return, though.
Would have gotten better, but the cliffhanger ending is terrible and horrendous
Had an enjoyable and promising start, became a bit "rinse, wash, repeat" after awhile. These creators can nail a good concept and sound design, but they continually fail at having a direction the story leads. As I was afraid, the conclusion to this series felt so rushed, disjointed, and half-hearted. When engaging with a story, we suspend our disbelief, placing our confidence in the storyteller to lead us out. This story left the listener stuck in the story because it failed to properly conclude itself.
I just listened to the entire podcast in four days, which is pretty fast for me, and I am blown away. Alex Reagan and Dr. Strand have a Mulder and Scully vibe that works so well, and I love Alex'c friendship with her fellow producer Nic. One of the highlights of season 2 was how Alex's life was directly affected by the stressful investigations and how it changed her relationships as she buckled under the stress. I never thought I'd have cause to shout out the ads in a podcast, but here I am. It took a while for them to get playful and fun, but by season 3, they're really creative and funny. I head-canon that Alex and Nic write the funniest ads their sponsors will let them get away with. The Me Undies ad was truly legendary! The mystery does get a little convoluted in season 2, and it gets harder to follow. The way the various interviews get broken up according the conversations' threads makes it hard to keep up with the gazillion clues that are being dropped. I really hope we get a second half to season 3! In terms of emotional resolution, I feel alright with the end of season 3, but I really want to see some of these mysteries get wrapped up. If nothing else, I would love more resolution to Strand's relationship with his wife and daughter. Emotionally, those are still big parts of who he is as a character, and I can't imagine the podcast moving forward without addressing them somehow. I'm fine with this ending — the fans can theorize and try to fill in the blanks — but my reaction is definitely softened by the fact that I listened to the whole podcast in less than a week. Had I been listening for the 2-3 years it aired, I think I'd be much more frustrated with the lack of resolution.
I love this program, it evokes every emotion and thoughtful response I've ever hoped to elicit with my own work. Thoroughly engrossing.
Kinda creepy, kinda cool. Don't listen just before falling asleep :)
Pretty great until the finale.
Great series!
I loved the first two seasons of the Black Tapes but it unfortunately falls apart in the final season. I live how it's played straight and it took me a bit when I first started listening to catch on to it being fake. Great production, but let down by the story
This one was recommended to me by someone at Tampa Bay Comic Con. I really enjoyed the first season a lot. Great story, cast, writing - powerful storytelling! Subsequent seasons felt almost aimless and as much as I wanted to fall in love with the story again it didn't have staying power, though some sections still had genuinely fantastic hooks!
Have to be neutral on this one. The first season was great, the second was so bad I couldn't finish.
