My guest today is a professional photographer based in Cleveland, Ohio named Cody York. Cody and I have similar career paths in that we both started working for BMX magazines around the same time, and we both now do freelance photography. I’ve always been a fan of Cody’s work, and I’ve always enjoyed catching up with him on the deck of ramps at the various BMX events we’d be shooting, so I was really excited to chat with him today and share his story with you guys.

The interview derailed several times because it was just so fun catching up with an old friend, so there are a lot of questions I didn’t get to ask, but I think you guys will enjoy the candid interaction along with the insight and experience Cody brings to the table. And whenever possible we did try to provide you guys with some actionable takeaways and ideas for motivation and inspiration.

I talked to him about making his childhood dream of working at a BMX magazine come to life and what it felt like for him to leave that dream behind and move back home to Ohio from California. We also talked about how he got a call out of the blue that landed him a job shooting BMX photos and writing articles for ESPN—a pretty badass title to have on your resume.

Cody shared some of his biggest wins as a freelancer and how he’s making his money now. This includes getting some great passive income selling prints online as well as working with his local tourism board to photograph all things that are Cleveland.

I even shared my big win with the client I’m working for, and for the first time publicly I read the single-page contract I have with them that allows me to keep my dream alive working as a freelancer.

We wrapped up by discussing Cody’s camera setup and which products in his gear bag are working for him and which ones he had to abandoned.
