Breathing Techniques and Breathing Exercises for Better Health | Learn How to Breathe Better (2023)

Jodi Wolmer is my guest in this episode of The Free 2B Curious Podcast.  She is a respiratory physiotherapist with a truly holistic view of the body, the mind and the breath so you can expect a lot of talk about all aspects of breathing and you can expect to receive some super practical advice from the episode.

Jodi’s patients include children and teenagers with vocal cord dysfunction, sleep apnoea and ADHD.  She recently presented at a conference for parents with children who have ADHD where she spoke about the integral part that breathing plays in mood, memory and concentration, as well as the management of anxiety in the patient.

We cover all aspects of breathing with a particular focus on what parents can do to help themselves and their kids to breathe better.  Expect to see a real life breathing assessment being done on me!  And you can follow along too and do the assessment on yourself.  Jodi introduces the breath so profoundly when she says it is something you barely notice you are doing except when you can’t breath properly and then it is the only thing you can think about. Jodi has some key tips for the best breathing, her top one being to breathe through your nose.  But what about when your nose is blocked?  What then?  Well Jodi also has excellent nasal unblocking techniques which she shares on the podcast episode.

Jodi explains that the best breathing is when our exhalations are longer than our inhalations as this calms the nervous system and puts our bodies and minds in a parasympathetic state instead of the “fight or flight” state we seem to operate in these days.  She explains how breathing is a function of the body that works independently but one which we can also control. She reiterates “when in doubt – breathe out” throughout the episode and gives some exercises for us to do to practice exhaling with length and at a slower pace. She says that all of these things lead to better self-regulation and an environment more conducive to healing and recovery.

In her true holistic way Jodi also elaborates on what else keeps us well – things like the dietary principles of the Weston A Price Foundation, drinking structured water and getting enough sleep alongside breathing properly (through the nose not the mouth!).
