Are you feeling overwhelmed in your photography business? Feel like you have to work during the most beautiful nights and weekends of the year? Do you lack balance in your personal life and don’t know what to focus on during the week in your business?

In this episode of The #PHOTOBESTIES Podcast, my best friend and wedding photographer, Ashley McKenzie, from Ashley Mckenzie Photography, joins us for a chat all about burnout in the photography industry. We chat about the different times in our businesses when we were feeling overwhelmed, and the steps that we took to allow us more freedom in our businesses.

Every photography season, there seems to be anxiety that we are running into a new busy season without feeling rested from our previous year. Anything from booking out all of your nights and weekends, to committing to double (even triple!!) header wedding weekends that leave you exhausted or fall family sessions up the wazoo.

When we are constantly running full steam ahead, how does that impact our client experiences? Are we truly able to give them the experience that they deserve, or are we leaving them unimpressed and feeling like they’re not the top priority?

Some of the things that have helped both of us are theming days in our weeks for specific work that needs to be completed, and shooting a maximum amount of sessions or weddings per week or month. We recommend keeping promises to yourself, and being comfortable setting boundaries. It’s not always an easy thing to implement, but we all eventually feel the pain of needing to make changes.

What’s holding you back from making these changes? Maybe your pricing is not setup to be super sustainable? Maybe you feel bad saying “no” to your clients?

But remember, you start to reach a point where when you are constantly working and reaching regular burnout, that your ROI (return of “time” investment) just isn’t there. We are more productive when we rest and have focus.

Overall, one of the most powerful lifestyle changes we can make is reducing decisions we make on a daily basis - this could be anything from meal planning to having a “work” uniform. The more simple you keep your life and business, the more productive you will be. But it’s HARD as creatives to discipline ourselves at times.

To begin, choose one thing to focus on and work on that right now. Reassess your boundaries and make the needed changes you’ve been craving.
