How to Look, Breathe, and Chew with Robyn Youkilis (Podcast 85)
Healing your gut is no small task… It involves re-engineering your entire life, everything from the food you eat, to the supplements you take, all the way to how much sleep you get. But no matter what gut-healing “diet” you’re on, or whatever gut-repair supplements you’re taking, there’s one more critical piece of the puzzle. And if you don’t incorporate this into your healing journey, you’ll never fully recover. That tool? The powerful connection between your gut and your mind. This is why I’m so excited I got to sit down with my friend, Robyn Youkilis, and chat about this with her. I love Robyn for her slightly-sassy, no-nonsense tips and her amazing recipes. Plus, she makes this whole healthy living thing look like a total party. (Don’t believe me? Go check out her Instagram – this girl bounces from workouts to TV appearances to Coachella to Turkey, all while having FUN.) We talked about this ‘missing gut-health tool’ in-depth, including the what, why, and (the seemingly-elusive) how of creating a truly healthy connection with your gut. Robyn shared the simple, yet effective, lessons that are the core of this missing tool, such as “Breathe,” “Chew,” “Eat,” “Drink,” “Shop,” and “Shed.” By the end of this podcast, you’ll have specific tips to improve your mind-body connection and change the relationship you have with your gut… And hopefully incorporate this missing tool along with everything else you’re already doing to heal your gut. On This Podcast with Robyn Youkilis, We Discuss: 3:32 – Robyn’s digestive healig journey and how she learned to thrive through her gut 8:15 – What does “Food Is Love” mean to you? 11:58 – “How we digest our food, is how we digest our lives.” 18:15 – “I am not the guru, you are the guru.” 23:53 – The 1-2-3 Freedom Tool (Look, Breathe, Chew) and tapping into your intuition 28:47 – Mealtime with kids can be a little crazy (tried-and-true ideas to use tonight) 30:49 – “The Good Poop List” and other tips straight from Robyn’s book 35:29 – Special offer for the SCD Lifestyle community -> 36:44 – Looking to connect with (and learn more about) Robyn and her work? Go here. A special thanks goes out to Robyn for taking the time to join me on our show, especially with a baby on the way and in the middle of a book launch. If this show resonates with you, head on over and pick up your copy of her new book, Go With Your Gut. She’s offering 5 free recipes, if you’re ready to get started right now. I know her work is going to continue helping so many people take steps toward creating health in their lives. Also, if you’re interested in learning more about Robyn and the amazing work she is doing in the world, head on over to her blog or maybe you’re ready to get some 1-on-1 coaching. The Unspoken Forces of Food That Help or Hurt Our Health (Podcast 84)
One time, for 28 days, I drank nothing but protein shakes. I was following a supposedly AMAZING fitness diet to lose weight. While I did lose some, I gained most of it back within a few months. I’ve tried almost every “diet” in the world, whether it was back when I was trying to add muscle to play college sports, lose weight when I was 60lbs heavier or fix my health after that. And I can tell you that after publicly talking about my story and working with people for the last 6 years there’s NO DOUBT in my mind… that our relationship to food must be explored. Whether you sometimes cheat, fall off the wagon, binge, overeat like I used to do…  or whether you get “stuck” and militant about foods or stress eat like Jordan has in the past… or whether you’re like good friends of mine who’ve starved themselves or purged at times… I want you to know you’re not crazy nor should you be ashamed. I do want to encourage you to explore your pattern with food, though – to get curious, fascinated and excited to discover your patterns. Because guess what, everyone has them. One of the best ways to start is by listening to this very raw podcast where I talk about my patterns with food, where Emily shares her very vulnerable story and Marc helps us all relax into a more solid relationship with it. On This Podcast with Marc and Emily, We Cover: 1:35 The discovery Marc made at 5 years of age 5:10 Emily’s background and why she has been a major inspiration for me 9:30 The secret science behind chips and why you may love to eat them 14:20 Our relationship to food is complex and affects our health 19:20 The nutrition of our food is affected by spiritual and emotional components 27:55 90% of food issues have nothing to do with what to eat, how to eat, or when to eat 32:25 When starting SCD or paleo focus on the pleasure not the pain 38:18 The meaning of “Are you trying to fill a spiritual hole?” 45:01 Where to go to look at your mind and its relationship with food 47:20 Our relationships with food are symbolic of who we are Thank you so much to my special friends, Marc and Emily, for sharing your amazing gifts with the world. I’ve personally been helped so much by you guys and I’m grateful to share your knowledge with our community. If any of this resonates with you, check out Marc and Emily’s 8-week long Transform Your Relationship with Food program here. Hope you enjoy this podcast, I sure did. My relationship to food has had wild ups and downs and since getting to know Marc and Emily it’s gotten so much steadier. -Steve P.S. – If you can’t see the audio player on this post, you can download the mp3 here. Finally, Simple Neck and Shoulder Pain Solutions That Anyone Can Do (Podcast 83)
In case you missed it, earlier this week I had my friends from The Sitting Solution, Chad and Brenda Walding, as guest writers on the blog. Actually, you might even already be familiar with them, especially if you read my post from last fall on my struggles with neck and upper back pain. The truth is, I’ve got 18 years of bad posture and movement that I’m trying to correct. And just like lowering stress, I think getting rid of neck, shoulder and upper back pain is something that needs constant attention. The reality is our western world is currently created to induce stress and to put us humans in unnatural positions. What I really admire about these two is that they understand that the world isn’t changing anytime soon. And that means we need to shift the conversation to not making it wrong, but what can we do to offset the damage it does to us. I really love how they’re able to break down complex movement patterns  and give everyone some easy to follow, straightforward tips to implement right away – even in your cubicle at the office. I was blown away by the results I’ve been personally seeing from their work, so I wanted to interview them and get more details.  Whether you’re struggling with chronic pains from sitting in the wrong position all day, or just want to maximize your health and longevity, this podcast is a must listen… On This Podcast with Chad and Brenda, We Cover: 0:57 How they got so passionate about movement and getting rid of pain in the body 5:10 The difference between exercise and movement 8:50 Two negative consequences of being in a static position 12:15 How to know which type of practitioner you should seek 16:15 The process to investigate the origins of physical pain 23:35 Is this fixable and how much time does daily maintenance take? 27:31 Proper sitting position for the office, car, or even park bench 34:20 Beginner exercises us desk jockeys can implement today – at the office! 41:50 The Chin Tuck – fix your forward head and relieve neck, shoulder and other pain 45:10 How chronic sitting and decreased movement impacts emotions, behavior and hormone levels I’m so grateful for Chad and Brenda, and the amazing work they are doing with The Sitting Solution every day! Their program for increasing movement helps you get to the root cause of your pain, prevent and fix bad and unhealthy habits, and empower you with knowledge to last a lifetime. I use their exercises daily and I’m looking forward to hearing how they help you. -Steve P.S. – If you can’t see the audio player on this post, you can download the mp3 here.
