This is the third sermon opening up the launch of Jesus' Kingdom ministry as set out in Mark's Gospel. In the reading set for this day Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law of a fever and goes to a lonely place to pray. Why does he do that?
Jesus has proclaimed the closeness of the God's awaited Kingdom. He has called some disciples. What happens next? Jesus goes to Sabbath day worship which starts well and then gets confrontational. A typical day of mission in the Kingdom.
Today we listen hard to the first words recorded from Jesus in Mark's Gospel. What was his Gospel and what did it require? in his Gospel of God he is the awaited Kingdom that people may receive and embrace.
