The third article of Iman (faith) is to believe in the scriptures of Allâh Ta‘âlâ. Allâh Subhânahû, from time to time, sent down scriptures to His prophets to inform His servants about His commands, prohibitions, and wisdom.

Tawrah was revealed to Musa Alayhis Salâm, Zabur to Dawud Alayhis Salâm, Injil to Isa Alayhis Salâm and the Holy Qur’an to Muhammad Mustafa Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam. Believing that these four Kutub (books) were revealed to the prophets Alayhimus Salâm is Fardh (obligatory). Aside from the four books, there are also a hundred suhuf (pages). According to a report from Abu Dharr Radhiyallâhu Anhu, 10 suhuf (pages) were given to Adam Alayhis Salâm, 50 were given to Sheeth Alayhis Salâm, 30 to Idris Alayhis Salâm and 10 Suhuf (pages) were given to Ibrahim Alayhis Salâm, which is in total 100 suhuf (pages).”

These kutub (books) and suhuf (pages) are Allâh Ta‘âlâ’s words and were authentic in the times they were revealed. Their wording and order are divine and not human-made. They were brought down to the prophets by Jibrail Alayhis Salâm.

After the previous books, the Noble Qur’an, Allah Ta’ala’s last book, was sent to Hadhrat Muhammad Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam. Its complete revelation took twenty-three years, and the ayat (verses) were sent to Nabi Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam in accordance with the events. The Holy Qur’an is the greatest miracle. All miracles lasted for a certain period, but the Holy Qur’an will last until the last Day. The creations are unable to bring forth the like of even the shortest Surah (chapter) of the Quran. Allâh Ta‘âlâ says: “Say, if all men and jinn gathered together to produce the like of this Qur’an they could not produce one like of it, though they were helpers one of another.”(Surah al-Isra, verse 88)

The renowned Arab poets and men of letters, who could be titled as the champions of linguistics and literature, could not produce the like of the shortest Surah (Surah al-Kawthar) in terms of eloquence and rhetoric. When it became apparent that such people were helpless to produce a part of Qur’an, people realized more about the divine nature of the Qur’an. Subsequently, those who accepted the hidayah (true guidance), confirmed the prophethood of Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam.
