///The exhibition project »Vertrautes Terrain – Contemporary Art in/about Germany« at ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art (22.05. – 12.10.2008) conceives itself as a resonance space within which the differentiated examination of works by international artists, who reflect on Germany in distinctly different ways as a historical-, art-, and social sphere can be carried out. The focus placed on the German context refers to an »imaginary cartography«, which seeks to trace those concerns dealing with the form and content, the symptoms and the virulent features in art as set against the backdrop of their socio-political presence. The terrain that the exhibition is looking for is, in truth, a non-site, inevitably not bound to sites. Instead, it is more interested in pictures of Germany, stereotypes, atmospheres, moods, as well as the ways they are treated. The idea for this exhibition was born of the atmosphere described at the outset, the fact that until now almost no art exhibition has posed a confrontation with Germany, and the current success of German art, a label that marks a domestic and foreign exhibition tradition that is, ultimately, fiction. With approximately 70 German and international artists, the exhibition is intended as a process as well as a current snapshot. In this way, the exhibition is, last but not least, shaped by shared and clearly shifting ideas of what the term »Germany« means. The exhibition was curated by Gregor Jansen and Thomas Thiel.
