In the UK, Refugees make up less than 1% of the total population. A VERY small portion of British society, contrary to some beliefs. People flee their countries for many reasons - war, ethnic/tribal/religious or gender violence. Or fear of persecution based on race or political affiliation. Fleeing Zimbabwe and Robert Mugabe's tyranny, Jennie speaks to Delight Mapasure about how she ran for her life, all the way to the UK when she was 19 years old; leaving her family and parents and everything she knew behind, in order to save her own life. When 19 year old Delight arrived in the UK, cold, terrified, and traumatised, rather than being met with humanity, empathy and compassion (something many British people pride themselves on), she was met with disdain, racism, bias and a system that continued to dehumanise and traumatise her. She was no longer 'Delight Mapasure'. Rather, she was an asylum seeker, a refugee, someone who was here to take jobs away from the British people and feed off of the system. For many years, she was known and called ONLY by her government issued number. Not by her name. In spite of of her traumatic past in Zimbabwe under Mugabe's rule and subsequent hardship she endured under Refugee status in the UK, Delight harnessed her energy, strength, intellect and resilience and launched several businesses here in the UK. One of which is 'K's Wors' sausages. She's appeared on Dragons Den and has secured product deals with Costco and Ocado. In addition to speaking openly and honestly about her experience as a refugee, Delight and Jennie also address some of the issues around female founders and entrepreneurs trying to secure investment and funding in a financial system founded in misogyny and racism (with less than 2% of investment being given to female founded businesses and a selection process that involves ticking a race box).

Delights story began with some of the worst traumas and dehumanisation one can experience, but is now filled with success and hope.... and her story is only just beginning.
