Longworth's thesis in this episode is that Red Shoe Diaries was progressive for its time because it centred women's fantasies and, unlike most porn, was aimed at a female audience. She acknowledges that all the nudity in the show depicts women naked, presumably for the female audience's male partners. Does that seem likely, though? Most episodes were both written and directed by men, so isn't it probable that this show presents male fantasies about what they wished women secretly wanted? I dunno, porn is fraught and personal, and I didn't have Showtime in the 1990s so I'm not familiar with the series. Maybe it was secretly great. Longworth's example episode summaries did not strike me as convincing, though.Still, an hour with Longworth on her favourite topic is fun, even when I'm not sure if I agree with her.
