The Contestant is by far my favorite episode of Swindled, so much so that I find myself re-listening periodically in between new episode releases. In this episode, A Concerned Citizen carefully weaves together two but uniquely unbelievable stories about game show deception. Beginning with Michael Larson’s memorization of the Press Your Luck game board followed by Charles Ingram’s hubris as he cheats what is perhaps the world’s most famous quiz show, ACC showcases what he does best: captive storytelling littered with dryly humorous remarks that lighten the often dark subject matter and, most importantly, a shock value that doesn’t hold a candle to other more sinister true crime podcasts. While exposing the darkest parts of humanity through story crafting, most of which the public does not have complete knowledge of, ACC graciously and concisely brings meaning and depth to his educational and informative narratives.
