Designing for Play – Melissa Pickering on The Product Experience
If you – or your kids – have ever controlled a Lego creation from an app, then you’re familiar with Melissa Pickering’s work.  Now Lego’s Head of Interactive Play, blending digital and physical play, she got her start as an Imagineer at Disney (designing rollercoasters!) before founding a STEM startup.  She joined us on the podcast to talk about designing for children, ensuring that parents are happy, and designing to ensure that your customers take pride in what they accomplish. Quote of the Episode ‘Intrinsic motivation’ is one of the key principles of play, another being ‘active engagement’ and another being ‘joyful moments’. And we find that it’s so important when we have kids in an unstructured or free-play scenario, it’s because they are inherently motivated to play just for themselves, they’re not trying to accomplish some external reward or win a certain game. Testing Business Ideas – David Bland on The Product Experience
David Bland is the CEO and Founder of Precoil, an author, and a long-time practitioner of agile and lean startup.  He joined us on the podcast to talk about how to create focus around what matters to your users by using different testing methodologies – a topic he and Alex Osterwalder cover in their book, Testing Business Ideas. Quote of the Episode If your leadership starts to think you’re more excited about the process than making an impact, then they’re not really going to be excited about supporting you… So what my advice would be – is just find that thing that people are worried about: in your backlog, in your strategy, in your roadmap, and find the smallest test you can do to help generate some evidence around that thing. The Internet of Things – Daniel Elizalde on The Product Experience
With over 20 years of experience in industries ranging from manufacturing to aerospace, to energy, and more, Daniel Elizalde has seen it all. Currently VP, Head of IoT at Ericsson North America and also an IoT instructor at Stanford University, Daniel talks to Randy and Lily about how to gain the skills needed to confidently and efficiently manage any IoT product. Quote of the Episode Most people are hardware product managers, or embedded product managers, or cloud product managers, so when they step back and see that an IoT product has all those components at the same time, it gives them that appreciation of how complex this really is. It’s when you put all those things together in a way that you can actually articulate…  and can actually deliver solutions to your customers – that’s when the ‘A-ha! moment’ happens.
