Brief opinions about Doctor Who, voiced by a typical face of the group (middle-aged, white man) but often with humility and curiosity. I am not invested in Doctor Who's narrative intricacies and continuity, but what I enjoyed most were the host's reflections on his own reactions to episodes, showing insight beyond mere encyclopaedic knowledge.
Dr Kevin Fong takes listeners through the final crucial minutes of the Apollo landing. Using historical recordings and interviews, he picks apart not just the events, but the people and systems behind the moon landing.I didn't even start out interested in space exploration, only in human factors - and there is much for an enthusiast here. He is quite deliberate in pointing out communication issues that arose during the landing; in humanising the whole affair (it is easy to forget the youth of the department - how far out of the realm of possibility this was for everyone). An enjoyable piece of listening with fantastic production values and music that never gets bogged down in technical detail.
Alie Ward interviews experts in various subjects - anything you can put an "-ology" to! Her enthusiasm shines through, and her clear-eyed description of the inequalities that plague many areas of academia keeps it from becoming cheesy or forced. The theme naturally slants toward STEM subjects but some of the standouts include harder-to-define subjects - "Agnotology" particularly appears to have been popular.
