RATING
I was a little surprised at first how great an interviewer Hanif Abdurraqib is, besides being one of the best music writers and poets working today. But it makes sense—as a writer he is so adept at creating and paying deep attention to connection, both between himself and the subject of his writing and between himself and the reader. So of course he would also be excellent at creating connection between himself and his guests, as well as between the show and the listener. This is honestly the best music-oriented interview show I've heard, and it's among the best interview shows that I've encountered in any genre.
This latest conversation, with writer and photographer Teju Cole, is one of the best interviews I've ever experienced in any medium. A deep, detailed, and profound discussion of photography, writing, what it means to look, what we choose not to see, and how to be an ethical person in this world. Whether you are new to Between the Covers or a long-time subscriber, this one is an absolute must-listen.
I'm always looking for more podcasts about the visual arts and especially photography, and what I want is discussion that gets at the hows and whys of it all. I recently listened to the episode with Matt Eich and quite enjoyed it! Host Jennifer Yoffy has a great eye, a history as a curator and publisher, as well as her own experience as an artist, which makes for a strong foundation for these conversations. Looking forward to hearing more!
